History of Moab

The people of Moab were descendants of Lot, Abraham’s nephew, who had to flee Sodom when God rained down fire upon it.(Around 1868 B.C.)

The mother of the Moabites was Lot’s elder daughter. (Gen. 19:30-38)

Moabites worshiped Chemosh and other pagan gods.

Page 45: 1 Introduction to the Book of Judges 8 July 2007

45

History of Israel and Moab Around 1423 B.C., the Moabite king, Balak,

tried to hire a magician named Balaam to curse Israel before they entered the promised land. (Num. 22-24)

Instead, God caused Balaam to bless Israel

But Balaam also and urged Balak to send beautiful Moabite women into the Jewish camp to seduce the men.

This caused sin and idolatry, and it was punished. (Num. 25)

Page 46: 1 Introduction to the Book of Judges 8 July 2007

46

History of Israel and Moab The book of Ruth took place about 200 years

after the war Ehud the lefty led against Moab (Jud. 3:12-30)

This time was also about 80 years before other wars with Moab when Israel was under Saul (1 Sam. 14:47)

Ruth’s Statement of Conversion

“And Ruth said, Entreat me not to leave thee, or to

return from following after thee:

for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest,

I will lodge: thy people shall be my

people, and thy God my God”

(1:16)

Law of the kinsman redeemerIf brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband's brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband's brother unto her. It shall be that the firstborn whom she bears shall assume the name of his dead brother, so that his name will not be blotted out from Israel.

(Deuteronomy 25:5,6)

Page 51: 1 Introduction to the Book of Judges 8 July 2007

51

Law of the kinsman redeemerBut if the man does not desire to take his brother's wife, then his brother's wife shall go up to the gate to the elders and say, “My husband's brother refuses to establish a name for his brother in Israel; he is not willing to perform the duty of a husband's brother to me.” Then the elders of his city shall summon him and speak to him.

(Deuteronomy 25:7,8)

Page 52: 1 Introduction to the Book of Judges 8 July 2007

52

Law of the kinsman redeemerAnd if he persists and says, “I do not desire to take her,” then shall his brother's wife come unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face, and shall answer and say, “So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his brother's house.” In Israel his name shall be called, 'The house of him whose sandal is removed.’

(Deuteronomy 25:8-10)

55

Why did God kill Naomi’s two sons?

Nobody knows for sure

But they did marry unbelievers(assuming that Ruth and Orpah did not believe in the God of Israel before their marriages to Mahlon and Kilion)

A believer marrying an unbeliever is a sin that gets God angry – even today

Page 56: 1 Introduction to the Book of Judges 8 July 2007

56

The sin of marrying unbelievers(Deuteronomy 7:1-6)

When the LORD your God brings you into the land which you go to possess, and has cast out many nations before you … you shall conquer them and utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them nor show mercy to them. Nor shall you make marriages with them. You shall not give your daughter to their son, nor take their daughter for your son.

Page 57: 1 Introduction to the Book of Judges 8 July 2007

57

The sin of marrying unbelievers(Deuteronomy 7:1-6)

For they will turn your sons away from following Me, to serve other gods; so the anger of the LORD will be aroused against you and destroy you suddenly ... For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth.

Page 58: 1 Introduction to the Book of Judges 8 July 2007

58

Application

God is not mocked – a man reaps what he sows (Gal. 6:7) – probably in this life and for sure in the next life

Don’t think that your obedience and sin are private and don’t affect others; they do

Do not marry an unbeliever,or else you will get God angry at you

Be upset about sin in society, b/c God is upset

Page 59: 1 Introduction to the Book of Judges 8 July 2007

59

Application

Serve the poor like Boaz did

Be a friend to all who fear God (Ps. 119:63)

Serve the the elderly like Ruth did

Follow proper procedures like Boaz did
