WHY TEACH FOR INDIA? The Present Picture:
4% - of Indian children never go to school.
42% - drop out before they finish primary school.
90% - drop out before entering university.
The achievement gap between the privileged and under-privileged
schools is aplenty. This is because of the lack of quality teachers and
efficient teaching methods. Thus, the child loses interest and is not
able to reach his/her true potential. And the day that all children reach their potential, is the day that India
reaches her mark, a step near towards its vision to development.
HOW DOES THE TEACH FOR INDIA MOVEMENT
OPERATE?
The Fellowship:
Teach For India recruits India’s most promising college graduates and
high performing professionals to serve as full-time teachers in low-income
schools for two years. Fellows work tirelessly to bridge the immense gaps
their children face, putting their students on a fundamentally different life
path. Teach For India staff provides training and support to Fellows so
that they can employ innovative teaching strategies to maximize theireffectiveness in the classroom.

HOW DOES TEACHING EVOLVE A LEADER IN YOU?
Teach For India’s “Teaching As Leadership” (TAL) model is based on
the belief that excellent teachers employ the same skills as excellent
leaders in any field. The TAL model requires teachers to plan
purposefully, execute, effectively, work relentlessly and reflect
continuously in order to push students to significant academic gains.
Through the TAL model, Fellows become leaders who can make
significant academic gains in the short run and advocate educational
reform in the long run.

WHAT WILL BE THE OUTCOME OF THE MOVEMENT?
The Teach For India movement started in 2009 with 80 Fellows
teaching in 33 schools across Mumbai and Pune. Today, the Teach
For India movement is spread across Mumbai, Pune, Delhi,
Hyderabad and Chennai. It has 196 alumni and the Fellows teach
approximately 16,000 Children.
In the next Five years, Teach For India aims to impact
approximately 60,000 Children with its unique methods and
philosophy, and for our alumni to become proof points across
sectors of society: examples of excellence that will fundamentally
change our idea of what is possible. Teach For India, by bridging the achievement gap will bring to
reality the dream that, “One day all children will attain an excellent
education.”
