1. How do I find videos available via OSU Libraries?

Use the Visual Media mini-catalog to search. This will get streaming media and also non-streaming videos like DVDs, VHS, etc.

If you do a keyword search, you can limit just to online videos in the Material Type box:

2. What are the major platforms for OSU Libraries’ videos and what features do they have?

All databases allow you to link to whole videos. You should use the OSU Library Catalog’s link for this purpose. Other ways to share videos vary by database”

3. How do I share videos with a class?

See the lists in #2 with specific optionss for different platforms. The database’s help area can give your further directions or contact your Subject Librarian for help.

There are several things you can do:

Share a link to the catalog record for the video:

See #1 for directions for searching the catalog for videos. Once you find a video, look for the permanent link in the record. Share that URL with students.

Other options (see #2 for availability in database):

• Embedding in Carmen: o Use the embed code provided by the database. Insert the embed code into a page within your

Carmen course. • Segment/Clip:

o Usually requires setting up an account with the database. This will allow you to choose a specific portion of the video.

• Playlists: o Create a sequence of videos/clips.

Note: In all cases, off-campus users may be asked to sign in. The word “proxy” should appear in all URLs except for the Safari database.

Where do I find these options? Generally, somewhere near the video. Here are screenshots for some of the most-used video databases: Films on Demand:

Kanopy:

Note: embed code under Share.

Alexander Street:

Swank:

Note: The scissors icon in player controls is where you create clips.

Docuseek2:

Sage (both databases):

Note the clip option is below the video, the other options are to the right.

Trouble viewing in Carmen? View in a new tab (Links to an external site.).

Place video in Carmen using embed code provided by video platform.

Below video, place link to video so it can open in a new tab/window. This helps users having issues with seeing embedded videos. Use link provided by the platform. If link is to a library-provided platform and does not contain proxy string, place this immediately before the link, with no spaces:

http://proxy.lib.ohio-state.edu/login?url=

4. What if OSU Libraries doesn’t have a video I want?

You have two options:

1. You can fill out the Streaming Video Request form to see if the OSU Libraries can obtain the video. Note that this is not always possible as not all content is available via our streaming service options. In some cases, we may need to purchase a DVD.

2. Go to #1 for directions on searching videos to find other titles on the topic or ask your Subject Librarian to help with this.

5. What about other streaming services?

• Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) has some streaming media as well. Users will need a library card to access their content. Contact CML with questions about using these in courses – the OSU Libraries does not manage this content.

• Commercial services (Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, etc.): OSU Libraries is unable to get access to anything directly via these services. Rights may vary, but these services usually prohibit public sharing – so they should not be used for in-class purposes. Work with your Subject Librarian for alternatives.
