The courses in h istory a re divided into thr ee groups : A. Introductor y courses 1, 2, 4 , 5, 6 , a nd 1 0 are for un­

.dergraduates, and may not be counted toward advanced d e­grees in history. Courses 1, 5, 6, and 10 are the courses open to fresh men. Students may take only one of these freshmen cour ses for full cred it (three credits each semester ) s ince each contains in troductory tra inin g for which credit ought not to be given twice; but if they have had or are taldng one or these courses for fu ll credit , anoth er may be ta ke n withou t the s uvplemen tary reading and topica l r epor t fo r tw o cr edits each semester . Students no t r egistered in the College of Letter s and Science may talte a ny of the introd uc tory courses for two cred its each semester. Students are advised n ot to neglect advanced work iu the a ttempt to cover all of the in­troductory courses.

B. Ad1·anced courses 1 00 to 17 6 continue, in the dir ection of greatC'r spec-ialization, the wo1·k begun in the introductory courses. They may be elected by studen ts who have the necessary preparation .

judgment), the deficiency must be made up clut·ing the first gr ad uate year, without counting toward the h igher degree.

The award of the doctor's degree is based upon th e prepar­ation of a thesis and examination in seven tlelds, two of which m ust lie outside the departmen t.

The thesis must be based upon indiv idual research, and must be presented in goo<! literary and technical form for the approval of the reading committee, at least thirty days before the cand idate is admitted to h is tiual examina tion.

Two examinatious a r e required fo r the doctor's degree. 'l'he prelimina r y examination must be taken at least twelve mouths in ad vance of the d ate at which the degree is expecte d to be awarded. It is des igned to demonstrate the extent and sound­ness or the candidate's preparatiou over a ll or the seven fields described below, and to serve as a basis for his further studies. Admission t o the cand idacy for the degree w ill be based upon this examination.

The preliminary examination may, at the discretion of the department, be accepted as final over any or t he fi e lds i11cluded within the major and minor fie lds offered, but no t includ­in g the thesis or the thesis fie ld.

'fhe final examination w ill inc! ude the thesis and lhe thesis field and a ll of the other fie lds presented by the candidate that have not been elimin ated at the preliminary examination.
