Zone

The entire district (East longitude 76046‟29” to 78

041‟34”, North latitude

31044‟57” to 32

0 59‟53”) falls under the High Hills Temperate Dry Zone. The

area is snow bound from November – March and characterized with very low

rainfall (about 250 mm). The soil of the zone is sandy to sandy loam with low

fertility status and almost all the crops respond to the application of nitrogen and

phosphorus. No crop can be raised without assured supply of irrigation water.

Crops are raised on sloping fields. Major problem of the area is soil erosion and

water management. Most of the area is prone to glaciers and the top soil is

removed every year through glaciers. The major crops grown in the area are pea,

potato, barley, hops, buckwheat, temperate vegetables oat, kuth, manu etc. Of late

apple cultivation has caught the fancy of the farmers with area under it increasing

at a rapid pace.

Technical Feedback on the demonstrated technologies

S. No Feed Back

1 Doses for different herbicides recommended for weed control in potato should be modified so as

to meet the specific conditions of Lahaul valley

2 Most of the weeds in pea were controlled by using Pendimethalin. However, the weed Equisetum

emerges after the crop which is not controlled by this herbicide and has become a problematic.

weed in Lahaul valley

3 There is urgent need to develop pea root rot /wilt complex resistant varieties. However, seed

treatment with Carbendazim (0.25%) combat the disease up to 25.5%.

4 Researcher should refine the technology regarding nutrition management in apple especially for

high altitude areas. There is also urgent need to know the nutrient status of the orchard soils in

Lahaul valley.

5 Package of practice for rajmash as recommended for other parts of the state should be modified as

per the conditions of the district.

6 Breeder should develop short duration, high yielding variety of toria, that could be sown after

harvest of pea and which matures before the on set of winter.

7 Improved variety of oats (Palampur-1) gave 22.35 per cent higher green fodder yield as compared

to the local variety of oats. Another high yielding oats variety, suitable for the conditions of

Lahaul valley, should be developed.

Farmers’ reactions on specific technologies

S. No Feed Back

1 Farmers particularly farm women were satisfied with the performance of Atrazine for controlling

weeds in potato and Pendimethalin for controlling weeds in pea.

2 Farmers are adopting seed treatment with Carbendazim for the control of root rot/wilt complex in

pea in large scale.

3 The farmers were impressed with the results obtained with the application of Ridomil MZ for the

control of late blight of potato.

4 Farmers were very much impressed with the toria variety „Bhawani‟ which gave higher yield than

„Yungar‟ (local variety). This variety also has higher oil content. The farmers were impressed with

the results obtained with the application of recommended doses of fertilizers.

5 Farmers were impressed with the performance of all the varieties demonstrated, particularly

Kanchan, which gave very high yields. Also the farmers were convinced with the necessity of

adding recommended doses of fertilizers for obtaining good yields.

6 Farmers were satisfied with the performance of „Palampur-1‟ variety of oat.

3.10 Indicate the specific training need analysis tools/methodology followed for:

Identification of courses for farmers/farm women:

The scientist of the Kendra regularly visits different villages and interacts with the farmers,

farm women and village elders. The scientists also conduct PRA exercise in different villages and

based on the analysis of the data generated in the village the training needs are identified. Also the

farmers from different villages visit the Kendra with their problems and based on the interaction with

them. The scientists try to identify the problems and training needs of the farmers.

Identification of courses for rural youth: The problems of unemployment or under employment are severe amongst the rural youth of the

tribal district of the Lahaul & Spiti. The centre has identified vocations after consulting the specialists

in various fields on which the centre is organizing training. The main objective of such trainings is

that the youth can start their own enterprise after the training and can earn their livelihood from such

vocations.

Identification of courses for in-service personnel: The centre is conducting regular meeting with the district heads of various line departments

so that the training needs of the extension personnel be identified. In addition these trainings are also

discussed in the Scientific Advisory Committee meeting of the KVK in which representatives of

various line departments are also present. Based on these deliberations these training courses are

decided for the in-service personnel.

4.2. Cases of large scale adoption

A. Since its inception this Kendra has been promoting seed treatment in pea to check the incidence of

root rot / wilt complex. The Kendra has laid out OFTs, demonstrations and conducted a large number

of trainings in different villages of district on this topic and has motivated people to adopt seed

treatment. As a result of the efforts put in by the Kendra, farmers have started treating their seed with

various fungicides, particularly Carbendazim (Bavistin) and this movement has spreaded to many

villages. Farmers of the new areas are also contacting this Kendra either personally or on telephone to

know about this method of seed treatment so that the losses due to root rot/wilt complex are

minimized. Also the same technology is being promoted by the Department of Agriculture of

Himachal Pradesh Government which has made a policy that every seed that is sown in the field

should be treated seed.

B. The cropping season in Lahaul & Spiti is short and only one crop can be taken in a year. However,

the pea crop is harvested in the month of July and for three months fields remain vacant or put under

fodder production. Some farmers of the district, particularly in Pattan valley, were cultivating

„Yungar‟ variety of mustard which gave very low yields as it was prone to shattering losses and also

the oil content was less. The Kendra promoted the cultivation of short duration variety of toria by

conducting trainings and laying out of demonstrations. The farmers appreciated the new variety as it

gave significantly higher yield and was not prone to shattering losses and have adopted this variety.

Presently most of the farmers in the Pattan valley in the district have stopped cultivating „Yungar‟ and

have started cultivation of the toria crop (Bhawani).

4.3 Details of impact analysis of KVK activities carried out during the reporting period

Weeds are the major problem in all the crops. Due to labour shortage, chemical control of weeds is

gaining acceptance amongst the farming community.

Due to inadequate availability of FYM / organic matter farmers are increasingly adopting

vermicomposting technology and demand for vermiculture is increasing.

Due to the efforts put in by the KVK, the use of mineral mixture and uromol bricks is increasing with

every passing day and there is an increased demand for these inputs.

9.0 Constraints

9.1 Administrative

Lack of infrastructure facilities like Lab-cum-office building, residences and demonstration units.

Being a remote and sparsely populated district a good conveyance is required to cover the entire

district.

9.2 Financial

The land allocated to KVK is undeveloped hence; separate budget is required for the development of

land.

Under FLD on pulses (rajmash) funds are released after sowing time of crops is over. Therefore,

permission may be granted to conduct FLD in the following year. Funds are insufficient to meet the

targets.

9.3 Technical

Because of limited cropping season, farmers remain engaged in their own field activities, thus unable

to spare time for the long duration On-campus training programmes.

Due to less number of extension functionaries working in various line departments, staff is not

deputed to attend in-service trainings conducted by the Kendra.
