EFP PresidentMartin Schweighofer

EFP Managing Director Sonja Heinen

It gives us great pleasure, on behalf of EFP’s members, to introduce you to this year’s European Shooting Stars – an extraordinary group of ten up-and-coming actors selected by an international jury for this honour. With laser focus and unshakeable passion – a combination of hard work and innate talent – EFP’s Shooting Stars are poised to make their mark on the international stage.

Over the past 20 years, European Shooting Stars, in partnership with the Berlin International Film Festival, has showcased the exceptional talent of close to 300 young actors from throughout Europe, elevating many of them to an internatio- nal level. The initiative has provided these young talents with manifold new contacts in the film industry and exceptional public recognition.

We wish to thank Festival Director, Dieter Kosslick for his dedication to our initiative. We also like to thank our main partner, Leysen1855, and automobile partner Audi, German Films and event partners Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg. EFP is supported by the Creative Europe – MEDIA Programme of the European Union, the German Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, the Film Fund Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein and the Ministry of Culture of the City of Hamburg.

Our warmest welcome to the European Shooting Stars 2018!

In 1998, when Shooting Stars was launched at the Berlin International Film Festival, it was the first ever and only international initiative to focus on acting talent. EFP’s aims were two-fold: to highlight outstanding up and comers – young actors who would define the future of European cinema – and to demonstrate the vital role these actors play in building a creative and sustainable system for the distribution and exhibition of European cinema.

The actors selected to take part in Shooting Stars had all achieved fame on their hometown screens and stages. For many, Shooting Stars marked the launch of prestigious international careers. Former Shooting Stars encom- pass an array of bright European talent,

which recently includes Carey Mulligan (Mudbound), Alicia Vikander (Submergence) Pilou Asbaek (Game of Thrones), Riz Ahmed (Star Wars: Rogue One), Mikkel Boe Foelsgard (Land of Mine), George MacKay (Captain Fantastic), Ruth Negga (Loving) and Alba Rohrwacher (My Family – in Competition in Berlin). The list of European Shooting Stars is long and illustrious.

This year’s Shooting Stars will take part in a four day tailor-made programme of meetings, presentations, networking activities and social events while at the Berlin International Film Festival, all designed to offer the actors exposure and contacts on an international level. At the center of the activities will be a

press presentation where the Shooting Stars are introduced to international media, and an award ceremony on the main stage of the Berlinale, where the talent will be lauded by the festival and applauded by the audience. At the top of the agenda will be daily networking events focused on the industry. These will include meet-ups with casting directors (from the International Casting Directors Network – ICDN) as well as a new initiative introducing the talent to producers participating in the Berlinale’s Co-Production Market, all of whom are involved in international co- productions.

13ICDNinternational casting directors network

The International Casting Directors Network (ICDN) is an association of 80 esteemed casting directors from 25 countries from across the globe. Among its goals, ICDN acts as a support and resource center for casting directors, and works to shape policy and process within this sector of the industry.

partner

German Shooting Star Louis Hofmann at the Actors Industry Network event in 2017

“For me, and I believe I can speak for my colleagues at the International Casting Directors Network (ICDN) as well, Shooting Stars is a source of inspira-tion to us all. As we meet the young actors in this setting, it often provides confirmation of our faith in these newcomers, whom we may recently have cast in important, leading roles, for example, Franz Rogowski (Transit), which is screening in Competition in Berlin. Additionally, over the past two years, I have cast three Shooting Stars in projects I have been working on: Louis Hofmann (Dark), Sara Serraiocco (Counterpart) and Sven Schelker (Homeland). Today, as international co-productions are more prevalent than ever, networking like this is a Win-Win situation for all involved.”

Since its inception in 2005, ICDN has worked closely with European Film Promotion in connecting Europe’s young up and coming acting talent with the broader international industry at EFP’s flagship event at the Berlinale, Shooting Stars. As a key component of Shooting Stars, ICDN members take part in structured activities with the selected actors aimed at their launch onto the international stage. The Actors Industry Network provides the

platform for meetings, working breakfasts and speed-dating which offer the ten Shooting Stars an oppor- tunity to establish first time, and in many cases, on-going relationships with many of the world’s top casting directors. This has proven to be an extremely effective tool for advancing the actors’ international careers.

european shooting stars at the Berlin IFF Germany, February

Each year, EFP presents ten of the most talented young actors from ten different European countries to the international press, public and industry during the Berlinale. They connect and network with casting directors, talent agents, producers and directors to broaden and strengthen industry alliances. The initiative emphasizes the crucial role new talent can play in marketing European films and offers support and publicity to young Euro- pean actors and actresses as they begin to cross-over from national prominence to an international career.

the changing face of europe: new european documentaries at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, Toronto Canada, April / May

Putting a focus on outstanding docu- mentary productions from Europe, EFP has initiated this new programme in collaboration with Hot Docs. Starting in 2018, a dedicated section of the festival will present European film- makers and their work. In addition panel discussions and workshops on co-production, funding as well as meetings with potential buyers give room for networking and opportunities to sell their films. Since 2017 EFP has offered FILM SALES SUPPORT for world sales companies marketing European films at Hot Docs.

EFP not only promotes European films and talent around the world, it also backs marketing campaigns of associated world sales companies in countries outside of Europe via FILM SALES SUPPORT (FSS). It contributes to additional promotional activities for European films, covering up to 50 per cent of marketing costs at the Sundance, Toronto, Tribeca and Hot Docs festivals as well as the FILMART, Asian Film Market and AFM markets.

film sales support outside of europe

Sales companies may choose between single and slate funding. The latter allows for the coverage of concerted campaigns at the Toronto International Film Festival and a subsequent market, such as the Asian Film Market, the AFM or the FILMART. EFP may addi- tionally offer FSS for the promotion of Swiss films outside of Europe, thanks to new international measures by the Swiss Federal Office of Culture, Media Desk Suisse and Swiss Films.
