What is Service Learning?

Service learning is a process whereby students learn and

experiences that actually meet community needs.

Page 4: 1 E1 Introduction To Service Learning

Why do we do it?

To infuse service learning as part of character development, and promote independent thinking and problem-solving through community service.

To foster reflective, empathic, and sensitive personal responses to the needs of others, and a sense of social responsibility and global citizenship.

To provide us with the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills and leadership skills.

To encourage a life-long commitment to community involvement.

Process

The CIP leaders and Monitors will be in charge of the project and it is advisable that a planning committee be formed.

You will need to draw up a proposal (see Proposal Form) which should include details of the plan.

A Project Timeline needs to be completed as part of the planning process. The timeline indicates the target dates, tasks and actions by whom to be taken.

The CE teacher vets the proposal and the project timeline, and submits a copy of the Proposal Form to the CIP teacher (Mr Lim Yong Khern) for any necessary approval and purposes of record.

Once the CE teacher and CIP teacher have jointly approved the Proposal Form, you can carry out their service learning project as indicated in the timeline.

*Examples of service are planning, making handicraft, rehearsing, buying materials, etc. In this way, the students take responsibility for their own participation.

• You should indicate the estimated amount of time spent on each type of service on the logsheet to be verified by the CE teacher.
