NAS Backup Challenges

Traditional NDMP weekly fulls (level-0) and daily incrementals (level 1):

Move lots of redundant data– Impacts network bandwidth– Consumes lots of storage

Fulls overrun backup window – Hurts productivity and application

Traditional Network-Based Backup with Proxy Server

• Proxy backup server runs backup agent and resides on network

• NAS volumes mounted through CIFS or NFS for backup to proxy server

Less efficient due to excessive use of network to move data between systems

Can cause performance degradation for backup operations

• Provides local or remote block-level point-in-time copies

• Frequent snapshots can improve recovery point objectives (RPOs)

Number of snapshots (retention issues)

Storing snaps and primary data on same array risks data loss

Likely limited to homogenous storage

May pre-allocate disk (~20 percent of total volume) on expensive primary storage
