GLOCOM: Who we are

■Established in 1991 as what is now called a social enterprise, under the International University of Japan.

■Specializing in the study of (again) what is now called 'information society'.

■Under a University system, but managed independently both in financing and staffing.

■Engaged in policy research on regulation and deregulation of telecommunication, and Internet and broadband.

Problems, or struggles

■Fund-raising□Joint research with CC-UK came only after the num

ber of failed proposals.

■Encouraging content creators□commonsphere is trying to address this.

■Less legal expertise□Fewer lawyers and legal experts participated than

other iCommons projects. (which may or may not be good....)

The way forward

■Two teams□Legal/licensing: iCommons and other existing acti

vities□Media and content: 'commonsphere', a portal site

for content published under creative commons licenses is planned.

■Derivative Only License (DOL): Strong requirements from the Japanese cultural geeks (animations, video games...)□No reproducing of the content as it is!

■And a Creative Commons forum in Asia region!
