MEN’S SOCCERBroncos head coach Rabi Sarhane enters his first season leading the Broncos, bringing a wealth of soccer experience to the program. Sarhane has served as South Bronx United Under-19 and Under-16 head coaches since 2015, played professionally in France and Spain. “As a coach and a mentor, I believe academics are the most important aspect of a student-athlete’s experience. Our student-athletes must succeed in the classroom to be able to succeed on the field. On the field, our team is a group of individuals driven by common goals” says Sarhane. Standouts Daniel Njonam and Shaibu Musah were tabbed as CUNYAC All-Stars and return as sophomores in 2019. Both returners netted four goals and tallied one assist last season for a total of nine points. From 2014-17, 39 percent (19-50) of players graduated, almost twice the CUNY community college graduation rate of22 percent. Abdul Walker and Lamin Mbye have earned honorable mention honors for the CUNYAC’s top academic honor, the Michael Steuerman Scholar-Athlete Award in 2019.MEN’S BASKETBALL

Under NJCAA Hall of Fame head coach Rich Corsetto, the Broncos will look to catapult to a regional and national contender. “I want ourstudent-athletes to be successful both on the court and in their studies, my goal is to establish a culture of accountability, trust, and togetherness for this program,” said Corsetto, who has over 700 career victories as a college and high school head coach.

The team brings back NJCAA Region XV All-Star and CUNYAC Rookie of the Year Tilquan Rucker. The standout averaged 28.5 points per game and was second in the NJCAA with 798 points. Malik Hamilton will also return after averaging 15.3 points and collecting 80 steals in the 2018-19 campaign. The team graduates Hector Montano, who averaged a double-double last season, with 12 points and 12.6 rebounds per game, good for fourth nationally. The program from 2014-17 boasts a 29 percent graduation rate, which is 7 percent higher than the CUNY rate and almost twice the College’s rate.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ACADEMIC SUPPORT

BASEBALLTwo-time reigning CUNYAC Coach of the Year Adolfo DeJesus has coached five NJCAA All-Americans, led the Broncos to an NJCAA Region XV Championship, and 13 CUNYAC Championships since 1993, most recently winning title in 2019. “The goal of the baseball program is to provide the best possible environment in which the student-athlete can excel in the classroom and on the field of play,” DeJesus said.

The Broncos won the 2019 CUNYAC championship at Brooklyn’s MCU Park after a second straight regular-season CUNYAC title. Five Broncos garnered NJCAA All-Region recognition, and four were named CUNYAC All-Stars, including league batting champ Adrian Urena, who returns for his sophomore season in 2020.

The program from 2014-17 boasts a 29 percent graduation rate, which is 7 percent higher than the CUNY rate and almost twice the College’s rate.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALLFifth-year head coach Ingrid Carmona is looking to lead the Broncos to their first CUNYAC crown since 2012. A former All-American and athletics hall of famer at California Baptist University, Carmona is also a club coach for New York City’s All-Star Empire. “I look for student-athletes who strive to enjoy success both on the court and in the classroom,” said Carmona.

The program has been on the rise, improving its win total in the last two seasons. In 2018, freshman outside hitter Angelica Aquino was named to the All-NJCAA Region XV Second-Team and a CUNYAC All-Star. Lisbeth Guerrero returns for her sophomore season after totaling a team-high 21 blocks and 74 kills, good for second on the team.

An astonishing 100 percent (13-13) of the program’s 13 graduates from 2014-17 entered four-year colleges, many going on to play college volleyball at the NCAA level.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALLDiane Onikute will be entering her second season as the helm for the Broncos. “We’re looking for student-athletes who are hard workers, loyal to the game, and committed to their education,” said Onikute.

The team graduates Asia Nelson, who was named a CUNYAC All-Star and recipient of the Burt Beagle CUNYAC Sportsmanship Award. She started every game in 2018-19, averaging 13.5 points and 16.8 rebounds per contest. The 16.8 rebounds were good for fifth in the NJCAA. Kayla Martinez also finished up her two-year tenure as a member of the team, finalizing 2018-19 by averaging 10.4 points and seven rebounds per game.

Seven of the program’s eight graduates (88 percent) from 2015-17 went on to four-year colleges, much higher than the CUNY average of 78 percent.

Athletics’ academic support coordinator Jessica Tobar hosts weekly appointments with all student-athletes in monitoring academic progress, as an outlet to course-specific academic support, and ensuring students not only meet eligibility standards but succeed on the path to graduation. Areas in which she supports athletes include: time management, study skills, course scheduling, connecting students with tutoringon campus, tracking academic status via weeklyprogress reports, and creating educational goals.
