On February 4, the Slinger Community Library kicked off a 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program. The program was started as a way to help parents and caregivers give children a solid learning foundation before they start school. Congratulations to Abby Voll (left) who was the first participant to complete the program and Alyssa Stedman who was the second. A round of applause to both girls for the ferocious reading and completing the goal.

A very special Jr. Jazzercise was held May 16th at Jazzercise of Hartford and West Bend! All money brought in the door was donated to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Children participated in exercise, games, and snacks and enjoyed a routine taught by Mitchell Sutter, member of the Jr. Jazzercise Taping Team. Prize drawings were in abundance with the kids earning extra tickets by bringing a friend. By the end of the evening, $220 dollars was raised for Relay for Life; way to go kids!

Director, student re-unite for “Annie”

The last time they worked together was 24 years ago. He was directing “The Sound Of Music” for Hartford Union High

School, and she had just been cast in the lead role of Maria von Trapp.

He is Jim Mohr and since then, he has gone on to direct 15 years of musicals for HUHS, co-founded the Hartford Players, formed Jim & I Productions in Hartford, and appeared in and directed many theatrical productions in the area.

She is Dani Kuepper and since then, she has been a Kid From Wisconsin, a Wisconsin Singer, danced at Opryland, received both a BFA and MFA from UW-Milwaukee, joined their Dance Department faculty and became the Artistic Director of Danceworks Performance Company in Milwaukee.

Now, after 24 years, they are re-uniting to bring the delight-ful Broadway musical “Annie” to the stage at the University of Wisconsin – Washington County in June. Mohr couldn’t be happier, “I’ve been asking Dani for years to choreograph a show for me. In all my years of directing, she is easily the most talented singer/dancer I was ever privileged to direct.”

Part of the reason they haven’t been able to connect is Kuepper’s busy career. In addition to being the mother of 4 children, and holding down 2 demanding jobs, she has also found time to work with the Milwaukee Opera Theater, Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra, Florentine Opera Company, Present Music, First Stage Children’s Theater, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra.

They re-united two years ago when Mohr directed “Oliver!” for Jim & I Productions at the Schauer Center in Hartford. He cast 2 of Kuepper’s 4 children in the play, and during breaks in rehearsal he began asking her again to collaborate with him. This time she agreed. “I’m very excited to have this opportunity to reconnect and work alongside my first director, Jim Mohr.  He introduced me to theatre in high school and as I continue to work with many differ-ent directors, I’m often reminded how lucky I’ve been to have had his influence early on. Jim Mohr has high expectations and extreme commitment to the craft.  He taught me to never come to rehearsal unprepared or unfocused.  I’ve not forgotten that lesson.”

“Annie” will be presented at the University of Wisconsin – Washington County, West Bend, on June 13, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22, 2014. For more information on the show or to purchase tickets, go to www.musicalmasquers.org.

Brownfields Grant awarded to Washington CountyThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced

today that Washington County will receive a Brownfield Assessment grant totaling $600,000. In 2013, Washington County formed a coalition with the City of Hartford, City of West Bend, Village of Jackson, Village of Richfield and Village of Slinger to apply for an EPA Brownfield Coalition Assessment Grant for Hazardous Substance and Petroleum Brownfields. The grant funds will be used to complete a community-wide inventory and prioritization of brownfield sites within the County, perform Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments on priority sites, complete remedial action plans for select sites and perform community outreach and education related to brownfields.

“As part of the project leadership team working to make this development tool available to the County’s communities, Economic Development Washington County (EDWC) is eager to dig in and put the dollars to work getting targeted redevelopment sites assessed and positioned as shovel-ready,” said Christian Tscheschlok, Executive Director. “By removing unknown predevelopment risk, we bring otherwise important locations back online as viable, if not lucrative, sites for business growth projects,” which, he added, “has a direct benefit to taxpayers by making higher and better use of already existing resources and infrastructure.”

In an effort to effectively redevelop and revitalize brownfield sites throughout the County, a Site Revitalization Steering Committee was formed in 2013 to oversee development and implementation of the grant. “Initially, the funds will target five high priority redevel-opment sites that were identified by our Coalition partners as part of the inventory and prioritization completed in 2013,” said Debora Sielski, Deputy Administrator for the Washington County Planning and Parks Department. “Additional sites will be selected following a comprehensive inventory and prioritization, which will provide opportunity for participation by all communities in the County.”

When asked about the County’s success in receiving the grant, Washington County Board Chairperson Herb Tennies said, “The County looks forward to working with our Coalition partners, the US EPA, Wisconsin DNR, EDWC and other project partners, community-based organizations and stakeholders toward a shared goal of improving economic and environmental conditions, and building a better and more sustainable future for the residents of Washington County.”More information on the EPA brownfields grant, the County’s Site Revitalization Program and the Site Revitalization Steering Committee process can be found on the County’s website at www.co.washington.wi.us/SRP. More information on the EPA Brownfields Grants can be found at http://www.epa.gov/brownfields/pilot_grants.htm .
