AIHA – Announces NIOSH Recommended Weight Limit App featuring the Cumulative Lifting Index

Reduce Risk for Back InjuriesThe NIOSH Recommended Weight Limit is the only Government-developed formula for determining risk for back injuries, and this App is the one that will give you everything you need: RWL, LI, and CLI

(in both English and metric units).

Developed by James D. McGlothlin, MPH, Ph.D, CPEPurdue UniversityOn behalf of the AIHA Ergonomics Committee

For 2015 AIHce - The Ergonomics Committee is featuring the NIOSH Recommended Weight Limit App:

Search for: NIOSH Recommended Weight Limit on the Apple App store using your iPhone. Note: This App is under consideration developed for development on an Android Platform.

• The NIOSH Recommended Weight Limit App is the only tool that not only calculates the Recommended Weight Limit and Lifting Index, but it will calculate the complicated Cumulative Lifting Index (CLI) in either English or Metric units.

•NIOSH estimates that Back Injuries cost industry billions of dollars each year.

•There are very few tools to determine risk for back injury – this App tool does just that.

Problem

Solution to the Problem• The NIOSH Applications Manual For the Revised NIOSH Lifting Equation

presents formulas to calculate the Recommended Weight Limit (RWL), Lifting Index (LI), and Cumulative Lifting Index (CLI). This process can be complex especially for the CLI. As such, the CLI is rarely used by practitioners.

• The NIOSH Recommended Weight Limit App (available on the iPhone) makes it easy to input your data resulting in immediate, easy and accurate results.

• Instead of guessing what jobs can cause back injuries you will know what they are and can act right away.

• The NIOSH Recommended Weight Limit is the only Government-developed formula for determining risk for back injuries, and this App is the one that will give you everything you need: RWL, LI, and CLI (in both English and metric units.

What Else Is out There?• Yes, there are other Apps for calculating the NIOSH

Recommended Weight Limit but none give you the flexibility of using both English and Metric Units.

• No other App can calculate the Cumulative Lifting Index (CLI).• Our App allows the Industrial

Hygienist/Engineer/Ergonomist/Safety Practitioner to take pictures and store them in the App file.

• Our App provides a report showing the data as it would look if using the NIOSH Revised Lifting Guideline manual.

• And our App is a bargain at $2.99 dollars/download from iTunes.

• Just about anyone who has workers performing manual material handling tasks. Ranging from the automotive industry, to construction, to healthcare to laboratories, to military, to Universities. Virtually anyone at risk for back injury!

• There is no limit to the use and utility of the NIOSH Recommended Weight Limit App and the benefits it will bring toward improving the quality of work life for workers by determining risk for and preventing back injuries.

Who Can use the NIOSH

Recommended Weight Limit App?

How Can I Benefit from This App and What Are Next Steps?

• We have developed and extensively tested the NIOSH Recommended Weight Limit App on the iPhone and MacBook Computer. (It works great based on feedback from hundreds of users).

• We are considering making it available for Android phones and MS-based computers.

• Our plan is to have the final App available on a .net platform, so it can be used by anyone, anywhere, on any device in the world!
