NEW UNIT:

Construct an argument supported by empirical evidence that changes to physical or biological components of an ecosystemaffect population

AND…

INVASIVE Species I want you to visit the webpage listed on your Edmodo for a link to some

situations where a species (biotic component) has been introduced without having any predators.

I want you to choose one of the organisms and read the attached article. Annotate as you have questions, just like we did on Monday.

You will need to be an expert on your article, as we will be discussing commonalities between each animal. You will be responsible for knowing everything the article says about the animal that you choose.

Feel free to ask questions if you need help as you read. If reading and annotating is an area where you feel you need to grow, pick any animal but the Mongoose or Africanized Honey Bee. The other animals have newsela articles that allow you to customize your reading level.

Invasive Species Discussion If/when you finish your Newsela/Reading response, you have

two options:

1.) Pick a different Newsela invasive species article and take a quiz (I’m trying to see how Newsela updates me with quiz info)

2.) Begin building your own food web using animals from either a grassland, deciduous, pond/lake or river ecosystem. You will need to incorporate animals from the Shelby Co. or Ky. area. Use google if needed for minor research on animals in the area.

Draw or write the animals, but write the trophic level underneath them. That will help you as you draw the connections.

Ecosystem Complexity

Ecosystems are much more complex than you would think.

Invasive Species Discussion

Remember: You need to be an expert on YOUR invasive species in order to share out to other people.

What are some commonalities that we are finding between invasive species?

Can we draw any inferences between what happens when a NEW species is introduced to an ecosystem vs. a reintroduction?

Test Discussion

How many people are studying after the last unit’s test?

Questions:

1.) What animal did you choose?

2.) What was it about the animal that you chose that made it so effective in its new environment?

3.) At what level (Producer? Primary consumer? Etc) was the invasive species having an immediate impact?

4.) Think back to the Wolf movie clip. Use your imagination and think about what the long term impacts might be if this species continues on its current course without being stopped. Write at least 4 possibilities - - but don’t cage your imagination. If you can go beyond 4, DO IT!
