HOST SCHOOL & LOCATIONCarson-Newman’s 125-acre campus is located in the heart of the Southern Highlands. Founded in 1851, the nationally ranked University is located 30 miles from eclectic downtown Knoxville, nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park and world-class Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

The University offers 50 undergraduate majors and 11 graduate programs. Flexible adult and graduate programs allow students to create an enriching educational experience that works with busy lives – on campus and online. As a “Tennessee Promise School,” Carson-Newman also offers several associate degrees.

Through faith and learning in academics, athletics and service, Carson-Newman provides the kind of education where students come first and are ready for their place in the world.

FACILITIES & EQUIPMENTCampers enjoy the use of state-of-the-art facilities. The Tarr Music Center includes classrooms, faculty studios, band and choral rehearsal wings, practice rooms, music library, vocal lab and the 250-seat Thomas Recital Hall. The campus is also home to the 90,000-square-foot Maddox Student Activities Center, which features an Olympic size swimming pool, weight room, basketball, racquetball and tennis courts, as well as a lounge and snack bar.

BANDSWhether you are a first year band student or been playing for years, we have a band for you! Placement in a band is normally based upon the grade just completed in school. Students who have recently changed instruments and all students with less than two years experience perform a brief audition at Monday afternoon’s registration to determine band placement. Master classes may include topics such as leadership, preparing for auditions, solo and ensemble playing, theory, and drum major instruction.

PIANO CAMPPiano camp is divided into two tracks: Track 1 (grades 5-8) and Track 2 (grades 9-12). In addition to receiving private lessons and performing in master classes, students in both tracks will receive instruction in technique, theory, literature, and musicianship. Students will also have the opportunity to collaborate with others through singing in a mixed chorus and playing in a piano ensemble or small chamber group. Piano campers should bring three pieces of standard repertoire (no pop arrangements, please), two of which should be performance-ready. The complete package price is $460 (lessons included).

VOCAL ARTS CAMPAre you a student with an enthusiasm for singing? Carson-Newman University Vocal Arts Camp is for you! The camp’s purpose is to help develop your voice, while being in a supportive environment. You will participate in master classes and be involved in a final theatrical performance. You may also choose to take a private lesson. Carson-Newman’s brand new Vocal Arts Laboratory contains cutting-edge technology to measure formant frequency, vowel definition, and intensity of singing sound – in real time! Singing incorporates many varied skills, so you will receive instruction in diction, basic musicianship, dramatic interpretation, audition techniques, and stage movement. Every student will grasp the foundational concepts for singing.

STRING CAMPNew to Summer Music Camp in 2018 is the addition of a string orchestra! Students in grades 8-12 with at least two years experience playing will have the opportunity to perform in a string orchestra and collaborate with others in small chamber ensembles. They may also choose to taken a private lesson with current members of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.

IMPORTANT NOTEEach band student must furnish his or her own instrument and bring a folding metal music stand. Only concert percussion equipment and pianos are available through the Music Department.

PRIVATE LESSONSPrivate lessons are available for strings, voice and each band instrument. Half-hour lessons are open to any camper at a rate of $20, while full hour lessons voice or instrument lessons are available to students in grades eight through 12 for $40.
