Intellectual Merit: Missouri S&T has contracted FEI to provide the requested transmission electron microscope and a Tecnai F20 S was purchased as originally described in the proposal. FEI performed an initial site visit to qualify the space and on their recommendation a major renovation of the Advanced Materials Characterization Laboratory (AMCL) was initiated (top photo). The $60,000 renovation costs were shared by the Graduate Center for Materials Research and the Materials Science and Engineering department.

Broader Impacts: The AMCL renovation required removal of our current TEM (Philips EM430T) and increasing the room size. A new design of the lab will put each of the NSF-MRI funded projects (DMR-0922851,DMR-0723128, DMR-9704288) in a single laboratory on campus. State-of-the-Art equipment has dramatically improved our ability to recruit from traditionally under-represented groups.

Finished laboratory space for the new TEM is on the left. The Helios Nano lab 600 dual focused ion beam microscope is on the right. Each year Missouri S&T is host to hundreds of K-12 students and the AMCL laboratory is a favorite.
