*** STATEMENT ***

SUPERVISOR JULIE CHRISTENSEN’S COMMITMENT TO

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY IN CHINATOWN

September 18, 2015

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contacts: Gary McCoy, (415) 845-3263, [email protected]

San Francisco, CA – Pedestrian safety has been a top priority since Supervisor Christensen

assumed office in January. As Supervisor for District 3, she has secured funding for many

pedestrian safety improvements throughout the district, with a focus on high injury corridors

throughout Chinatown.

After the fatality at Kearny and Clay Streets in June, Supervisor Julie Christensen immediately

requested several of these projects be expedited by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation

Authority and has been working with the SFMTA to find a safe solution to the intersection of

Kearny and Clay Streets.

“I am currently working with our residents, advocacy groups, the Portsmouth Square Garage, and

merchants to ensure that long term solutions work for everyone, while providing a safe corridor

for our residents and visitors,” stated Supervisor Christensen.

Supervisor Christensen’s office was recently made aware of a plan presented to the community by

the SFMTA. The proposed plan by the SFMTA was not approved or supported by Supervisor

Christensen nor is it what advocates, merchants, or residents were asking for. The Supervisor

supports a pedestrian scramble at the intersection of Kearny and Clay Streets and is committed to

working with the community, the Mayor’s Office and the SFMTA to improve pedestrian safety

and ensure the continued vitality of Chinatown.

Finding a solution has been challenging, and may take a little longer than expected. In the interim,

Supervisor Christensen has asked the SFMTA to provide PCO’s, or crossing guards, at the

intersection of Kearny Street and Clay Street as an added safety precaution for our residents and

visitors.
