ELEY VOLUMETER MODEL 29-4450 (CN-940) I. GENERAL INFORMATION The 29-4450 (CN-940) Eley Volumeter is a simple test device for use in the field and in the laboratory to determine the bulk density of soil. The instrument is recommended for use in soils undisturbed or compacted with particles not larger than 1/8" (3.2 mm). It consists of a stainless steel sampling cylinder with cutting edge and a piston with a micrometer volume gauge. The volume displaced by the piston inside the cylinder can be read on the scale engraved on its stem. A vernier scale marked on the top of the cylinder can be used in conjunction with the volume scale for greater accuracy of volume measurement. The volume scale has a range of 0 to 30 cc and the vernier helps to read accurately to 0.05 cc. The sample cylinder has 1.120" (28.4 mm) inside diameter and approximately 2 3/4" (69.8 mm) length. II. RELATED USER DOCUMENTATION These operating instructions do not contain all the necessary information on the

specific test procedures. Please refer to ASTM D-4944 or AASHTO T-217 for additional testing information.

III. DETERMINATION OF FIELD DENSITY OF SOIL A. Prepare tool for use by backing out the threaded stem until the piston rests

against the end of the cylinder. B. Dig a small trench to the depth of soil to be tested and position the tool

against the side of the soil profile. C. Press the tool into the soil to the depth flange. Remove the tool with the

sample inside the cylinder.

D. Screw the stem in to extrude the sample to the zero mark on the threaded stem. Use a knife to strike off sample flush with the cutting edge of the cylinder.

E. Screw the stem in further to extrude a known volume of the soil, e.g. 20

cubic cms, as read on the stem. Carefully cut or strike off sample flush with the cutting edge of the cylinder into a previously weighed receiver.

F. Weigh the receiver with the soil and calculate the weight of the soil. G. Calculate the soil density. Soil density = Weight of soil in gms Volume of soil in cu cms Soil density in lbs./cu.ft. = 62.43 x soil density in gms/cu. cm. H. If dry weight density of soil is required, dry the extruded soil in an oven

before weighing and follow previous step G. IV. USE OF ELEY VOLUMETER WITH SPEEDY® MOISTURE TESTER Field density and moisture content of soil can be simultaneously determined with

only one weighing of the sample in the Speedy® Moisture Tester balance. A. Follow steps A through D in Section III. B. With zero as an index, extrude the sample by turning the knob and shaving

off small slices into the weighing pan of the Speedy® Moisture Tester until a 6 gm or 20 gm sample, depending on the model, is obtained.

CAUTION: Protect the weighing pan and sample while performing this

step to prevent moisture loss. C. Read the volume of the weighed soil sample in cubic centimeters directly on

the threaded stem and vernier.

D. Place the weighed soil in the Speedy® Moisture Tester in accordance with the instructions for its use and determine the percentage of moisture in the sample. Convert the gauge reading to percentage dry weight by use of the conversion chart furnished with the Speedy® Moisture Tester.

E. Determine dry density of the sample. Using the volume of the weighed

sample (step C above) and the moisture percentage by dry weight (step D above), compute the dry density in grams per cubic centimeter by the formula:

Assuming that a 20 gm sample is used:

20 Dry Density = Volume (1 + dry weight moisture content)

If the dry weight moisture content is 4%, Dry Density = 20

Volume (1.04)

F. Determine the inches of water in a soil layer. Using the values obtained in previous steps D and E, and the density of water as 1 gram per cubic centimeter, compute the inches of water in the soil layer represented by the sample using the formula:

Total Water = (Dry weight moisture %) (Dry density) (Depth of soil layer)

G. Determine the total water in any soil depth by sampling each soil layer represented by a change in texture.

EXAMPLE Given: A soil 18 inches deep representing two textural layers. The

upper layer ranges from 0 - 8 inches, and the lower layer from 8 - 18 inches in depth.

Find: The total amount of water in inches to a soil depth of 14 inches. Procedure: Follow previous steps A through D for each soil layer.
