Two-story red brick Federal style house of exceptional architectural

d&tail ca. 1330. Date of construction and style of architecture

is early for Howard County, Missouri.

Gable end of the 1\ story pain block forms central third of the

facade, flanked symmetrically by lj- story twin wings having their

gable ends perpendicular to that of the central section.

Atypical plan has no center hall, originally no interior stairways

for access to second floor. Three rooms of about equal size across

front of house. Three rooms (sitting room, kitchen and dining room)

on the rear at right angles to front rooms forming a "T" plan.

Construction curiousity deleted interior connection between some

adjacent roorcs. One isolated downstairs front room is believed

to have been used by the original owner as an office. Upstairs

bedrooms were separated by wall about If feet in thickness with

separate exterior stairways for access. Doorways have since bsen

cut through these walls. Exterior stairs removed and interior

stairs inserted by present owner.

House built with slave labor. Brick burned on the property. One

slave cabin of wood frame construction, remains in good condition

behind the house.

Hilltop sits, house faces southeast. Present owner testifies that

disorientation to compass points proves ^advantageous for ventilation.

Walnut woodwork throughout. Ssveral especially fine original

fireplace mantles with hand-carved sunburst designs.

After purchasing property in 1961 present owner continued an

extensive renovation project began by the previous owner. Present

owner added one story room to rsar of "T", batlirooir-s at both

angles of the "T", and brick--wed porch to north side of original

portion of the "T".

House now in pristine condition, fresh plaster, paint, excellent

state of repair.

House built by Alfred Morris on who case to Missouri from Kentucky

in 1322 and began buying land in Howard County eventually owning

about 1600-1700 acres. (Information from Mr. and Ira. Gordon S.

KcKenty, present owners, who have made a study of the history of

the house, in interview, Missouri State Historical Survey staff,

August, 1968.) Alfred Korrison surveyed the town site for Fayette

and served as one of the trustees wnen Fayette was reincorporated

May, 1830. Korrison 1 s involvement in political activities explains

his need for a large separate office in his hone. He served as

sheriff, Judge of the County Court, and State Treasurer, 13J1-1360.

Wiile ha was treasurer, state funds were secured in the attic

workrooms of the house. House passed to James Horrison, son of

Alfred, about time of Civil tfar. Janes Korrison descendants lived

in house until 1952.

An exceptionally fine exanple of Federal style of the era in

central Missouri, the house is set apart by the arrangement of the -

facade. Most conteinporary local houses had the gable ends to the

sides rather than front and rear.

Origin of the design nc'. definitely known, but the consistency of

form and proportions, and assured manner in which .classic details

were employed in this building suggest that the builder draw his

ideas fron a published source, possibly a builder's planbook.

(Reference is made to the Palladian window in the gabls of the

facade, the fan-lighted main entranceway, keystone lintels of the

facade windows, the cornice with its regularly spaced and elegantly

formed modillions.)

A report included in the Historic Sites Files of the State Historical

Society of Missouri (E.F. Puckett of Fayette, J'o. based or. research

by L. Hainlin, and dated April 3, 13<8) notes that the house was

copied, in part from the design of the Morrison's brother-in-law

William Hughes' house, bailt 1328-1332 about four miles west of

Fayette.

LILAC HILL

A third suggestion as to the origin of the design of Lilac

Hill has been offered by Charles Van Ravenswaaj (quoted in

the Missouri Club Woman, Vol. XV, Mo. I;, April, 191iO, p. 2

referring to James Talbot's History of the South) who stated

that it was possible that Alfred Iforrison hirnself designed

his house.
