It ha s be en de ve lo pe d by sp eci alis t nur se s at the Harts hill comp lex together with Staffordshire Moorlands Primary Care Trust and the financ ial sup por t of the Guy Hilton Asthma Trust. The r ecor d prov ides a con- sistent source of routine and emerg ency information for patients, health professionals and others. Beside s enab ling patients to understand and be in control of their own con- ditio n, the emer gency card is designed to guide those who ma y nee d to hel p suff ere rs if they have an asthma attack. Experts say that by helping patients manage their own care it reduces emergency admi ssions to hospi tal, cuts the ti me chi ld re n t ake of f  school through illness and when extended to adults will reduce time taken off work. He was later given a three- yea r community reha bilit a- tion order. Yeste rday , la wyers for 40- year -ol d Wa lke r argued his conviction was “unsafe” bec aus e the tria l judge had given the jury confusing dir- ections. Three top judges were also told that the summing up had led to the jury no t proper ly unders tanding the cha rge laid against Walker. But, although Mr Justice Aikens said the directions had been conflicting and the summing up was “not the cle ares t”, he concl ud ed the con victio n could sti ll be con- sidered safe. The idea behind Sanity Fair is to provide the public with a better unde rstanding of men- ta l heal th is sues and he lp sta mp out the tr adi tio nal st igma to wa rd s such il l- nesses. Jo Bra nd, who worked as a psychiatric nurse until 1987 befo re beco ming a stand -up comic, has spoken out on the importance of understanding mental health issues ahead of next week’s event. She said: “Any event that att emp ts to deal wit h the sti gma tha t still exis ts in this da y and age , where we are supposed to be intelligent people, is a good thing. “Around one in three women and one in five men suf fer some form of mental heal th prob lem, so eve ryon e knows someone. “They are often jus t peo ple who ha ve suffered some sort of bere av ement or have been stressed by exams. “People with mental hea lth pro ble ms need int egra ting into the community . The prob- lem with that is in a lot of big towns and cities, communit- ies don’t e xis t. Peo ple sta y away from other people, espe- cially people who are a bit different.” Pro viding vis ito rs with information and services about ment al health issues wi ll be the No rth St af fo r d- shire MIND, Rethink, Manic Depre ssio n Fel lows hip and Studentsinmind . As well as the 30 mental health organ- isations attending the free event, vis itors wi ll also b e able to enjoy a colourful array of arti sti c tal ent , pro vid ing a fun, carni val feel to a da y of  psychic enlightenment. Sanity Fair spokesman Emma Edwards said: “It is a fun day but ther e is a serious message behind it. The idea is to give people some ideas and make them think.” Stoke South MP Rob Flello al so gave his sup por t to the event. Comedienne Jo backs event aimed at overcoming stigm A breathof fresh airAN INNOVATIVE schemehelping young asthmapatients at the UniversityHospital of North Stafford-shire has been extended toa d u lt s.

The project allows patientsto keep their records andemergency asthma card.

It has been developed byspecialist nurses at theHartshill complex togetherwith Staffordshire MoorlandsPrimary Care Trust and thefinancial support of the GuyHilton Asthma Trust.

The record provides a con-sistent source of routine andemergency information forpatients, health professionalsand others. Besides enablingpatients to understand and bein control of their own con-dition, the emergency card isdesigned to guide those whomay need to help sufferers if they have an asthma attack.

Experts say that by helpingpatients manage their owncare it reduces emergencyadmissions to hospital, cutsthe time children take off school through illness andwhen extended to adults willreduce time taken off work.

Special’sappeal failsA POLICE special constablewho rang a public telephoneand made an obscene sugges-tion to the young girl whoanswered has failed to havehis conviction overturned atthe Court of Appeal.

Simon John Walker, aged40, of Gill Bank Road,Kidsgrove, was found guiltyin September last year of inciting a child under the ageof 13 to engage in sexual activ-ity. He was later given a three-year community rehabilita-tion order.

Yesterday, lawyers for 40-year-old Walker argued hisconviction was “unsafe”because the trial judge hadgiven the jury confusing dir-e c t i o n s.

Three top judges were alsotold that the summing up hadled to the jury not properlyunderstanding the chargelaid against Walker.

TOP comedienne Jo Brandhas given her support to afestival in Stoke-on-Trentwhich helps raise awarenessof mental health issues.

The sixth annual SanityFair event takes place in Han-ley’s Cultural Quarter on Sat-urday, June 17.

More than 30,000 visitorshave attended the city centrefestival in the past and organ-isers are hoping to top thatfigure this year.

The idea behind Sanity Fairis to provide the public with abetter understanding of men-tal health issues and helpstamp out the traditionalstigma towards such ill -n e s s e s.

Jo Brand, who worked as apsychiatric nurse until 1987before becoming a stand-up

comic, has spoken out on theimportance of understandingmental health issues ahead of next week’s event.
