Unconsolidated, undrained testUU
The shearing resistance is determinedin "undrained conditions", which meansthat no change in the structure of thesoil is permitted so as to prevent fromdisturbing the original geostaticstresses. Once the cell is pressurised, nochange in sample volume is permitted,and the axial stress is immediatelyraised up gradually to rupture.
When to use the UU testThe shearing resistance is determined by this method, in most foundationsurveys, when the measurement ofthe angle internal friction is unknown.The operator can check the soilbehavior just after the structureconstruction, when the inter-particlevoids have not yet caused a changeof volume, and so the water inside thepores begins to drain.
Consolidated, undrained testCU
This method is used to determine shearing resistance regarding thegeostatic pressures, applied to thesoil sample, before its rupture, bymeans of the hydrostatic pressure inthe cell. This test differs from the UUmethod because, after cellpressurisation, the sample volume ischanged, according to the level of thestresses applied. When an additional load is applied up until rupture of the sample, nochange of volume is permitted, andthe pore pressure is measured inorder to deduce the total stresses,and in this way obtain the actualstresses.
When to use the CU testThe shear strength parameters areused when the behaviour of the soil is surveyed, even a long time after thestructure construction, and when thedraining of the water inside the soilsis completed.We use this method whenimprovements are planned for a particular soil.
Consolidated, drained testCD
This method is similar to that of CUtests, with the difference consisting inthe fact that when the axial load isapplied, the cell draining is opened.The test is performed at a veryreduced speed to prevent the porepressure inside the sample (aroundzero) from increasing.
When to use the CD testThe shearing resistance parametersobtained by CD method areespecially used, in cases of verypermeable soils, when theconstructions exist for such a longtime that changes in the volume ofsoils can occur practically withoutappreciable variation in the porepressure.This method perfectly reproduces thegeotechnical problems and ensuresthe examination of the behaviour of a soil in a more satisfactory manner.
