Porsche Owners Corral at Sebring 2006
There will be a PCA Membership station within the Porsche Owners Corral at the 12 Hours of Sebring for the American Le Mans Series race weekend, March 16 - 18, 2006. There will be scheduled appearances by Porsche race drivers for informal talks and autographs. In addition, IMSA will offer supervised parade laps of the track with a two lap maximum open to the fi rst 100 registered Porsches on a fi rst come, fi rst serve basis. Way to go everyone! SVR will host two Zone 7 Concours this year. Get busy cleaning and shining.
CRAB 32
This is the best weekend in a car you can have. CRAB Chairs Kim Kinder and Kim Nelson and their team of talented helpers are moving at full speed ahead to present one of the best CRAB events ever. You will notice that it is called CRAB 32; this is to say that this is the 32nd edition of this event. CRAB is the only annual Zone 7 multi-region, multi-event weekend event. Impressed yet? You should be. I will let the Chairs tell you more about it in their articles, but as you may gather, I am very excited about the event and the location.
The National Look
Parade 2006 will be in Portland Oregon. Short trip, relatively speaking, for SVR members to go to a National event. Parade in Portland was last held in 1995. Kim and I went, along with others from SVR. It was one heck of a week. We made friendships with other PCAers that continue on to this day. Make sure to sign up as a worker for some of the events. They typically have a special luncheon and shirt for workers. 30 Years Ago (March 1976)
Mike Willis and Peter Bogy chaired the March 7th “Son of Low Bucks” autocross at Northgate (entry fee was $1.00 per run). Lots of runs were available with driver education on the fi ne art of getting safely through the corners. To view the famous Low Bucks course today, take I-80 west, exit north onto Northgate Blvd., bend right onto Main Av-enue, and go right at Kelton Way. The course consisted of city streets: Bollenbaker Ave., Loveland Way, Graves Ave., and Kelton Way. At that time, this area was an abandoned development with streets, but not a house in sight, for several years, with no site rental fee...ah, the good old days. Many SVR members, including Rich and Connie Farlinger, joined with Golden Gate Region members on their March 20-21, Saturday and Sunday, Yosemite Tour, which included overnight lodging at Yosemite Lodge and dinner Saturday night at the Camp Curry Pavilion. In The Drifter, President Dave Neukom reported his fi rst Porsche was a 1961 356B 1600 Normal Coupe painted Aetna Blue (what a coinci-dence -- that’s EXACTLY what Tim Wil-son has). Harvey Cain reported on his plan to make Long Beach the tour destination on March 26-28 to see Jody Scheckter, Mario Andretti, Niki Lauda, Emerson Fittipaldi, and other Formula One drivers competing in the fi rst F-1 Grand Prix of Long Beach.
20 Years Ago (March 1986)
The March 15-16 Zone 7 autocross school in Stockton was nearly rained out, but event Chairs Don and Linda Henkle kept it going to a successful conclusion. With the fair grounds course under water Saturday afternoon, Don found a lecture hall, and with the crowd safely indoors, Terry Zaccone (GGR) and Larry Wilson (SVR) spoke for nearly three hours on the theories and techniques of autocrossing. It was sort of like Siskel and Ebert at speed. The five-leg, March 21 SVR Friday Night Rally, with Stan Breyfogle as rally-master, had a great turnout of 45 rally-cars,
11 of which carried SVR members who were also pursuing fi nishing points toward the year-end trophies for the PCA-members-only, fi ve-event rally series sponsored by Wyn Robertson’s Continental Auto Service. Event workers included George and Nona Morley, Mike and Michelle Willis, Heidi Lausten, Stan and Jeff Breyfogle, Dale and Shirley Newhouse, Don and Mary Jo Koepke, Richard Bender, Lee and Carolyn Coleman, Allen and Dolores Weddle, Rik Larson and John Clever. The fi rst SVR autocross of the year, which was on March 29 with Kirk Bradford and Larry Wilson as chairs, was close to becom-ing a disaster. Approval to use the site (Levitz Furniture store parking lot) wasn’t obtained until Monday before the event (which made event advertising a bit awkward). At the site, Kirk and Larry discovered they had no porta-potties - which was remedied after Pat Wilson secured use of the nearby Union 76 gas station rest rooms, free of charge. Then the State Police, closely followed by the County Sheriff, both with red lights blaz-ing, appeared after the Levitz store-manager complained about an unknown group using his parking lot (the store was closed). That was remedied after the property owner, RJB Company, confirmed that SVR had the company’s approval to use the parking lot. Then, the Sheriff returned to investigate an anonymous call claiming unsafe activities at the site, but Kirk and Larry convinced the Deputies that autocrossing was a safe thing to do. Finally, thirty-four drivers ran the event, each got to make eight runs, and everyone had a great time. The event was a smashing and safe success. Top time of day went to Darrell Terry, Golden Gate Region.
10 Years Ago (March 1996)
Thirty SVR members turned out for the March 2nd SVR tech session, and Herb Hoover gathered a knowledgeable panel of Porsche experts including Dwight Mitchell, Leo Droughton, Dawn Perry, Marsha Wil-son, and Ted Blake. Diablo Region member, Marsha Wilson also provided various door prizes. The March 7th dinner meeting at Sacramento Brewing Company, chaired by Sally and Ron Boeck was limited to the fi rst 48 people to make a reservation. The real draw for this event was the restaurant’s beer sampler (served with all dinner entrees) that included Hefe Weizen, Miner’s Gold Ale, Scotch Ale, Red Horse Ale, Oatmeal Stout, and Irish Ale (the Brewer’s special).
Jan and Andy Lundback chaired the March 16 “Daffodils & Wine Tour” which visited Daffodil Hill and the Deaver Winery. Tou-rees included Dave Piazzese, Jim McMahen and Linda and Maryann Blount, Helen Ashuckian, Rich Swenson and Judy Hanna, Marv and Marie Smith, and Allen and Dolores Weddle. Jan baked cookies for the group. While at the Deaver Winery, Dolores, Marie, Linda, and MaryAnn enjoyed an hour-long horse and wagon tour through the vineyards. SVR’s fi rst autocross of the year, held March 23rd at Mather Field, attracted 29 drivers who each got seven runs during the day on a “fast” course (third gear through the esses) set up by Event Chair Masuo Robin-son. The fastest fi ve drivers were Jim Hayes (49.47), Dwight Mitchell (50.20), Masuo Robinson (52.18), Linda Mitchell (52.57), and Neil Yonk (52.70). As soon as everyone ran out of gas (fi guratively), the group retired to the nearest Taco Bell for refreshments.

Please Join Us and Have Fun During FunKhana at CRAB 32!The CRAB 32 – FunKhana will be a mini AutoX aimed at honing ones driving skills. Doing
well on the FunKhana will surely assure the participants that extra edge one needs to place well at the main AutoX event in Stockton. The FunKhana will have tight turns, short straight-aways, and the melding of non-driving activities, all to be completed with a very fast-slow speed to win! This year the event will take place Friday evening, with or without a co-pilot, in the parking lot, just west of the Towe Auto Museum. So take your Bilberry, Ginkgo Biloba and Lycopene, and bring your car to this fun event.

Death Valley Tour March 24-26
It is a "DRIVING" TOUR - 800 to 1000 miles
What: This is to be a two-day driving tour. Depending on the number of participants we will divide into groups.
Starting: El Dorado Hill Shopping Center, US Hwy 50 at El Dorado Hills Blvd.
First Day: From El Dorado to Lone Pine, CA. via US Hwy 50 East > CA Hwy 89 South > CA Hwy 88/NV Hwy 88 East > US Hwy 395 South to Lone Pine, CA. This day will include about 6:00 to 6:30 hours worth of driving (about 300 miles) through some of the most beautiful countryside in California. There will be an appropriate number of pit/fuel/food stops along the way -- more information on those will follow.
Second Day: The tour of Death Valley. Starting in Lone Pine, the tour will proceed to Stove Pipe Wells, Furnace Creek Ranch, Bad Water and Scotty's Castle. About 350 miles, and 6:00 to 8:00 hours, later (depending on number and time in pit stops along the way) we'll call it a wrap back at Lone Pine.
Optional Tour: From Scotty's Castle East > US Hwy 95 > North to NV Hwy 268/CA Hwy 168 West. This is a terrific run, but we need daylight to do it safely so we'll play it by ear for those who are interested.
Caveat: This is the basic plan and as soon as participants are identified there will be a more definite schedule published.

The fi rst New Member Tour of 2006 will take place on a Saturday in mid-March. THERE IS SUCH A THING AS A FREE LUNCH. If you are a recent member (last two years or so) and have never attended this tour, plan on doing so—you will enjoy the outing and you even get a free picnic box lunch! Rallye
The Rallye schedule for 2006 Zone 7 is materializing! Thanks to efforts of the Zone 7 regions, it looks like we will have a 5-6 series Rallye schedule. J. Toney wants to present a rallye school here for the folks in late July, prior to Parade. Also, he will be conducting the rallye school in Portland on Monday afternoon. The pa-rade Rallymaster is Rik Larson who will
need workers; please let him know if you are available. Two very active rallyists have moved out of Zone 7: Al Armellini to Florida, Bill Jo-nesi to San Diego. We will miss them. The remaining rallymasters (folks who design and put on a Rallye) are reluctant to put on a rallye if only eight to ten (with luck) cars participate. I am hoping to connect with the other car clubs in the area to see if they would be interested in expanding the Rallye experience so that more folks can discover and enjoy this great sport. I would appreciate receiving the names of folks you know who have BMW’s,Corvettes, MG’s, Mustangs, Miatas, VW ’s, etc. and-would be interested in establishing the sport
in this area again. Mark your calendars! The Kid Rallye is defi nite for October 21st. The START is in Folsom, will last 2 hrs. approx., and END at a Pizza Parlor. Drivers(over 18) should start rounding up your navigator (younger than driver, down to age 5). You may call Helen Ashuckian (916/481-2759). More particulars will follow in future issues of The Drifter. Be sure to check out the fabulous calendar that our Webmaster has designed for our website. It will also contain the dates of the other Rallyes as they are confi rmed.

I’m so glad that dreaded winter is almost over. Porsche driving weather is just about here and just in time! Skippy fi nally has the garage he deserves! Buzz and I were busy with home improvements over the winter and converted our carport into a real two car garage. Of course, we didn’t do it ourselves, we hired a contractor. I did give it a great paint job though. We have lots of fun tours set up for 2006. SVR members stepped out of the woodwork to present some new things for us to do this year. Thank you! It takes effort from everyone to keep this club functioning. Please be sure to look at our website (www.derporsche.net) every couple of days because our awesome webmaster, John Murphy, is updating it all the time. The newest menu item are calen-dars from Zone 7 and links to other regions’ calendars. There are lots of events coming up for the month of March! Our dinner meeting is
on Thursday, March 9th and is co-hosted by G-24 member Cookie Anderson and Karen McGlumphy. It will be at Wong’s Garden in Roseville. Rauch has been busy getting us set up for Drivers’ Education (DE)! I am fi nally going to take Skippy out on the track, yahoooooo! We have two DE events in March on the 10th & 31st (which also happens to be my birthday!) at Thun-derhill. Guess what my birthday present is?? Yes, track day on the 31st! I can’t think of a better way to spend the day than bonding with my P-car…and my husband who will be bonding with his, as well. Click on the Driver Education menu button on the website for registration information. The spring New Member Tour will be underway on March 11th. If you are a G-24 member (fewer than 24 months in the club) and have NOT attended a New Member tour, you can join us on this fun day. This is a way for new members to get to know the SVR Board of Directors and other new members and get to know a little about what we do as a club. Please contact me if you have
not received an e-mail on this event. March 18th is another No-Host Break-fast at Karen’s Bakery in Folsom. This break-fast is a casual, come anytime between 7:30 and 9:30 and look for other SVR members, type of event. Thanks to Kevin Dougherty and Claudia Cypher for hosting a fantastic dinner in February! Feel like getting out and stretching those wheels a bit? Then hop in and drive to Death Valley with Al Nosenzo! Al is hosting the Death Valley Tour March 24-26. This will be a real driver’s tour with a lot of miles covered and some beautiful scenery. Al is quite expe-rienced at this route and has planned a great tour. Yes, the Parade Portland registration opens in just a few days. There has been a major effort to streamline the registration process this year
The emphasis this year is doing everything online. This means that if you have not reg-istered for a Parade since 2005, things will be very different. You will register for everything at the same time……no more registering for Parade and then later registering for each of the Parade activities. Registration will be thru the PCA.ORG website. But keep one thing in mind. To register online, you must be a registered user on the PCA website. If you aren’t already, register right away, as it will take 24 hours for your reg-istration to become effective. But, if you are uncomfortable with that, you can register the old way, by U.S. Mail. Simply log on to
http://paradeportland.org, download and print the registration form, fi ll it in, and mail it on or after the opening of registration. If you do not have Internet access, simply contact the Parade Portland Registrars, James and Jean Ohl, at (360) 852-4645, or at [email protected], and request that they send you a paper registration form. Requests for paper registration forms will be accepted starting February 19, 2006.
What is the Porsche Parade?
Porsche Parade is the annual gathering of Porsche owners from around the United States and North America (like Canada and Puerto Rico). Daffodil Hill to Murphys Back Roads Spring TourSunday, March 19th (Rain cancels)
Cascading rivers, verdant meadows, wild flowers and interesting Porsche roads
After warming our tires on Latrobe Road, we climb into the Sierras via Gopher Flat and Ridge Roads to Daffodil Hill. For theremainder of the tour, we head due south paralleling Highway 49, but 10-15 miles east and at the 2,500 -3,000 foot level toMurphys. The route follows 49er wagon roads, some little changed except for widening and paving, unlike gently rolling andcurving Highway 49. We’ll switchback into and out of deep river valleys and cruise through flower-covered meadows, whiletaking in Gold-Rush history.
If the blossoms are out, Daffodil Hill will be our first stop.
Ridge Road and Rams Horn Grade are smooth and banked, and with interesting decreasing radius turns. After stopping inVolcano (don’t miss the renovated St. George Hotel, a thriving outdoor summer theater and a fascinating pioneer-eracemetery next time you’re here), we continue through West Point, Wilseyville,Independence and Railroad Flat, winter home of a fair-sized buffalo herd.
A loop through Sheep Ranch will take us by the Sheep Ranch Mine, (formerly part of theHearst fortune), the town jail, a vintage glass-topped pump advertising gas at 18cents/gallon and the handsome, but dormant, Pioneer Hotel.
A few more rivers, a few more valleys, then….savor Stevenot Winery’s fine vintages. Picnic(Bring Your Own) under grape arbors next to San Domingo Creek.
Murphys, one of the more colorful Gold-Rush towns, is a few minutes from Stevenot and thetour’s end. Enjoy browsing the shops, museums, galleries and tasting rooms beforeheading home.

The “A” in CRAB stands for autocross, and this year at CRAB 32 we will be using our current autocross site at the fairgrounds in Stockton. This fi ve acre site of pure as-phalt, with additional area for grid and trailer parking, provides enough room to have some serious fun driving your Porsche. If you autocrossed last year with SVR, you know how much fun our events are. If you missed out, CRAB 32 is a great place to start your 2006 autocross season! Even if you have never autocrossed before, the CRAB autocross is for you. We will have instructors for new autocrossers and we have over a half dozen brand new loaner helmets this year in case you don’t have one yet. The course will be as long as we can make it while still keeping a good fl owing rhythm with some fun corners to test the skill of all drivers. The morning will start
with registration and tech at 7:30am. We will run two sessions with a short break for lunch in-between, and end in time for everyone to attend the banquet. There aren’t many food establishments near the site. Plan to either pack a lunch for the day, or order a box-lunch on your CRAB 32 registration form. As with all autocrosses, the entrants who drive also work the event, doing various jobs ranging from resetting cones to recording times to announcing cars. Detailed event in-formation will be included with your CRAB registration packet. Autocross is part social, part competition, part education, and all fun. Come out and autocross at CRAB 32 and be part of the action!

Have you heard? G-24, so named G (as in Gruppe auf Deutsch) and 24 (as in fi rst 24 months in the Sacramento Valley Region) is all about involving new members in the Club. It’s a great way to meet other new members, hear about upcoming events, and involve yourself in all the club activities. G-24 is an informal gathering of Sacra-mento Valley Region members designed to make new friends and alleviate those awk-ward I-don’t-know-anybody-here moments at the next dinner meeting, tour, or track event! Club offi cers are there and always will-ing to answer questions or lend an ear to your good ideas for future club activities. There are three more G-24 meetings scheduled this year: April 15th, July 17th, and October 7th. All meetings are held on Saturday mornings at 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. G-24 meets at Ettore’s at 2376 Fair Oaks Blvd between Howe and Fulton across from Border’s. What do you do once you get there? Good Exercise for Your Porsche

Most of us are familiar with track rac-ing, but few have ever seen an autocross. An autocross is a competitive race where drivers attempt to pilot their cars faster than other drivers over a small, irregular course. There are many differences between autocrossing and driving on a high speed track such as Laguna Seca or Thunderhill. In autocrossing, cars rarely exceed 40-70 miles per hour and are usually run in second or third gear. In track driving, cars often exceed 100 mph and utilize second through fi fth gears. An autocross course is defi ned by soft, plastic pylons and white chalk lines in a large parking lot or abandoned airport runway, so the only damage involved in going off course is a bruised ego or a removable scuff mark on a fender. Only two cars are on an autocross course simultaneously, compared to 20-30 on a track. An autocross “run” is one to three circuits around a ½ to ¾ mile course, rather than a 20-30 minute session around a two to four mile track. A different autocross course is designed for each event. This “one-time-only” course design combined with the low number of circuits means that autocross tests a driver’s ability to learn a course quickly, as well as his or her driving skill. And auto-crossing is much cheaper, $20-$40 dollars vs. $200-$350 for a track day. Like track driving, all novice autocrossers are assigned an instructor who rides along until the driver feels comfortable on the course, usually just a few runs. In addition, as with high speed track, no special equipment is needed in our club, except for a helmet. Due to the structure of the event, auto-cross is much more social than tracking. All drivers help run the event and it generally involves a fair amount of friendly kidding, particularly after a driver has mowed down a line of cones or executed a spectacular tire-smoking spin. The autocross day begins early, with vol-unteers arriving around 6:00 am to help set up – placing pylons, chalk-lining the course, and setting up timing equipment, the public address system, and an administrative area. Participants register, then prep their cars: loose items are removed, tire pressures are checked, and windshields are cleaned. Novice drivers walk the course with an experienced
autocrosser who discusses the best way to handle each turn, when to accelerate or brake, the line to drive, etc. Finally, there is a short drivers’ meeting; discussion includes the day’s schedule and dividing drivers into two groups. One group drives while the other acts as event staff.

Everyone helps out in autocross. Drivers select the job of their choice during registra-tion. Most jobs require no specialized train-ing, just a few minutes of explanation. A brief description of each follows:1.) Course setup and chalking - Places or-ange cones and lays chalk lines along the course as designed by the event organizer.2.) Registration - Collects registration forms, release forms and fees. Also, this person pro-vides handouts, if any, to drivers.3.) Technical Inspectors - Experienced driv-ers who check cars for safety and verify each driver has an approved helmet.4.) Grid Person - Stands at the course entrance and lines up cars in preparation for entry to the course. In addtion, he/she announces the identifi cation number of the car next in line to enter the course.
5.) Flag Person - Controls the course, signal-ing when a car can enter (green) and leave the course (checkered) or when cars should stop due to an emergency (red).
6.) Timer - Records a car’s elapsed time over the course, usually a three-person job. One person controls the electronic timer, another writes the time on a driver’s card, and the third retrieves and stores drivers’ cards as drivers enter and exit the course.
7.) Timing Slip Writer - Posted at the end of the course, writes the driver’s lap time on a timing slip and hands it to the driver as he or she exits the course.

8.) Announcer - Announces the driver’s name, describes the car, and gives the elapsed time at the end of the run. Spirited announc-ers may comment on particularly well-driven runs, or tell the world how many defenseless cones a driver just mowed down, or describe a particularly well-executed spin. (Tip: You get extra points for these two events.)9.) Course Worker - Usually stands inside the course, watching for dangerous condi-tions and uses a red fl ag to alert others of

10.) End of Day Pickup - Everybody pitches in to collect pylons. After the drivers’ meeting, the fun begins. The fi rst group starts their cars while the sec-ond group takes their staff positions. The grid person lines up cars at the course entrance. The fl ag person fl ags the fi rst driver onto the track. The Sacramento Valley Region pro-vides a two or three circuit format, the fi rst being a warm-up run, the second and third being the “hot laps,” driven hard and fast. At the end of the run, the timer announces the driver’s hot lap time. The timing slip writer records the time on a slip of paper and hands it to the driver as he leaves the track. At the same time, the fl ag person fl ags the next driver onto the track. Both groups receive three or four runs followed by a lunch break. The pattern is repeated in the afternoon.
Setting up cones after a spinout
Driving your car to its handling limits and pushing yourself to your skill limits in a safe environment is exhilarating and great fun. It ’s a day spent with friends or with friendly strangers, if you’re new. Autocross-ing is as much a race against yourself as it is against other drivers. Watching your own lap times drop a second or two with each run is very satisfying. No trophies are given for the best time, but spectacular off-course

excursions and drivers exiting the track with two or three cones stuck under their car are always loudly celebrated. Furthmore, since deep down, we’d all like to beat the next guy or gal on the track, each driver’s best lap time for the day is posted on www.derporsche.org, our club website. Some Porsche clubs take autocrossing very seriously, investing big bucks in cars and record keeping. Others autocross for fun, with competition being secondary. Our club takes the fun approach. Many people just autocross and never drive on a track. Others enjoy both (as I do), while some use it to improve their car control skills in preparation for track driving. If you are considering track driving, but are a bit hesitant, autocross is a safe and fun way to learn how to handle your car.
