Welcome one and all to another missive from the top as they say.

First off welcome to our new and prospective members, I believe you will find us to your liking but must

remind you and all our members, you will only get out what you put in. So on the note please make your-

selves known to those at the meeting or on the rides, don’t hang back.

We have lost a couple of branch members over the last month, and yes it will come to us all, and our con-

dolences go to their families and friends. I would like to thank those stood up and were counted at this

time, I know it is not easy. Thank you.

1159 Colin Simpson (lapsed member who was touring Australia with his wife, left for a 2-year tour and was

still going 12 years later)

6987 Karl Sommers (After a brave fight against lung cancer)

Ride on.

On to better things I hope.

I will be attending the coor- dinators conference in Lower Hutt

as your representative hav- ing attended these in the past I

have found these to be very informative weekends and I noted

in the last “Ulyssian” letters to the editor, that some believe

these are a waste of time and money. I have found the informa-

tion, discussions very enlightening and sometimes a bit

heated but always great.

The best bit is more the in- formal discussion with other coor-

dinators, and finding out how other branches are going and

solving their issues, whatever they maybe. Some even have an-

swers for some of ours.

A heads up at this point: We have our Branch AGM in Febru-

ary and as always all committee positions will be open. If you are thinking of or have thought of standing

for the branch committee, it is time to start doing something about it.

If all plans come together our November meeting should have a special guest, and as soon as confirmed I

will get an email out so you can invite friends and guest for the evening, especially those with a love of mo-

torcycle racing.

Until next time .

Stay upright

ACC Levies Update

It's time to have your say Levy rates are changing. Now is your chance to have your say. Levy consultation opens today and will run through to 5pm 19 October 2016. Jump online and visit shapeyouracc.co.nz and join the conversation by letting us know what you think - after all, it's your ACC, have a hand in shaping it. Starting this year, we'll be proposing and reviewing new levy rates for a two-year period, rather than every year. This mean during this year's consultation, we're looking for feedback on our pro-posed levy rates for the two year period 2017/18 and 2018/19. Here are a few things we're proposing:

Reduce the average Work levy from $0.80 to $0.72 (10% reduction) Increasing the average Earners' levy from $1.21 to $1.25 (3% increase) Reduce the average Motor Vehicle levy (excluding the Motorcycle Safety levy) from $130.26 to $113.94 (13% reduction) Maintain the motorcycle levy and motorcycle safety levy Enhance the Experience Rating programme.

We're taking a new approach to helping create healthy and safe workplaces.

During last year's levy consultation, we indicated that our workplace incentive products Work-place Safety Discount (WSD) and Workplace Safety Management Practises (WSMP) were being reviewed. From 31 March 2017, WSD and WSMP will close. You can find out more about this here.

We're taking a new approach to helping create healthy and safe workplaces. We're going to work with businesses to create tailored and cost-effective options for supporting workplace safety.

You can find out more and let us know what you think at shapeyouracc.co.nz/saferworkplaces. If you'd like to be involved in developing our new approach, you can also let us know on this page. We hope you'll take the time to join the conversation and have your say.

Kind regards,

Kick Start Motorcycle Event 2016.

Big thank you to the Selwyn District Council, CCC, Waimak District Council, ACC, Police and

motorcycle trainers for putting on a great and beneficial event for all local motorcyclists on

Sunday 2nd October.

Also an extra big “Thanks” to branch members Siobhan Storey, Bruce Vincent, Murray

Barrett, Ian Burgess, Steve Orpwood and Kev & Jo Thompson-Mills for helping set up the

St John Fundraiser Barbecue on the day. The food and the free water were provided by the

Councils above and the barbecue was manned by St John Cadets from the Darfield Area, a

great effort by all concerned.

Was, however, a little disappointed at the turnout, especially as it was such a beautiful fine

morning and the event was free, but then perhaps so many of our compatriots feel they al-

ready know it all or maybe consider themselves indestructible. Then again there would have

been those who, for one reason or another, just couldn’t make it that morning!

Great to see all the motorcycle dealerships on display; along with the Trainers especially

Duncan Seed and Dan Ornsby, who, with Peter Daly performed some very pertinent demon-

strations. Found myself intrigued by Peter’s comments regarding following distances, which,

as he said at the time “do not appear in the official “Road Code!” Evidentially when travelling

at 50 ks per hour “The Law” says you should be a minimum of 20 meters behind the vehicle

in front, which is a long way as they demonstrated! The “Road code” however only mentions

the “2 second rule” and does not specify an actual distance. Personally, I think that while 20

meters would be a very safe option, it would be impossible to maintain in any town or city in

New Zealand, especially on a motorcycle, on account of other driver impatience.

The 2 second rule is obviously a good option, although I know, from first hand experience,

that even that’s often hard to maintain, again especially on a motorcycle. Consequently, as

someone who rides around the city, frequently along both Bealey & Fitzgerald Aves I’ve

tried to develop my own strategy for combating and avoiding all those motorists, who have

to be somewhere else in a tearing hurry and resent their progress being impeded by some

upstart travelling at the speed limit. My first strategy is “always look for an escape route”

which isn’t always easy, but a cycle lane is a handy option “in an emergency!” Secondly

“always keep an eye in the rear view mirrors” especially when stopping at the traffic lights,

and always stop to one side, preferably the left side, of the vehicle ahead making sure the

driver can see you in his/her mirror. That way if the vehicle behind you hadn’t noticed that

you’d stopped you can always duck off to the side rather than become meat in a vehicular

sandwich! Thirdly look ahead for brake lights beyond the vehicle you’re following, the more

warning the better and peripheral vision is essential!

Obviously none of this is guaranteed to keep you safe, but surely it’s got to be helpful.

Would love to get some feedback on my comments, for or against, so please just email me on

[email protected] and your thoughts will be in the next edition.

Letters to the Editor .

Your chance to have your say and let the committee and the membership, at large, know ex-actly what you think, feedback is really essential to the effective running of any organisation.

Having been in Ulysses for a few years now, I’ve noticed that while lots of people join enthu-siastically, many are very quickly disillusioned. The one thing we really have in common is the fact that we all like to ride and that’s often as far as it goes. Most people have their own ideas as to the sort of riding we should be doing ie Long Rides, Short Rides, Overnighters etc and obviously there’s no way that this club, and particularly this branch, is going to please everyone all of the time. The same applies to social events.

Canterbury branch has seven committee members, who do their very best to organise a vari-ety of events in the hope of involving as many members as possible which, given the mem-bership figures, is not really that many. Consequently it’d surely be a big help if the “organisers” had a better understanding of what the “organisees” actually wanted from our club/branch!

This is where “Letters to the Editor” comes in! We’d like your views, your opinions, your rec-ommendations, your criticisms and your compliments, what are we doing right and what are we doing wrong and what can we do in the future? Your letters can be anonymous, but as editor I reserve the right to censor any comments deemed derogatory to any past or present member of either the committee, or the branch as a whole, many people have, at times, worked hard to organise functions and events.

Please email your letters and ideas to me at [email protected] and I’ll do my best to get them into the following issue. Look forward to hearing from you.

Dear Editor,

I really enjoy our Wednesday rides . What isn’t so good is the

lack of stopping at “Stop Signs !

Sincerely, Pete #3199.

Quite agree Pete and interesting too, because one of the other ancients raised the very same subject, totally independently, at lunch time during our ride to Rakaia Gorge on Wednesday 15th September! Got a few sheepish (or goatish) looks too, depending on their personal interpretation of the branch logo! Ed.

From our Australian correspondent in Gladstone, Queensland.

Hi Bob - from sunny Queensland.

We finish our house-sit here at Gladstone this coming week and move onto Hervey Bay for 10days via a side trip to Longreach and a nearby National Park. After a further house-sit and a Mate's 70th at Burleigh Heads, we return to NZ via a family call at Wellington. All being equal, I should be at the December Club night if not at some outing earlier in the month. Very sad to hear of Colin's passing and I hope Ulysses Christchurch was able to honour his memory in good num-bers.

The local Gladstone Branch has a couple of ideas that I have noted has been successful.

Their Ulysses Polo Shirts have their name embossed on the front above the “Old Man” making it very easy to talk to someone. Fading memories and all that!

The fortnightly midweek social run starts at a cafe at 9am with the actual run pulling out around 10am. Breakfast is optional ( great muffins ) -most just have a coffee or similar. This allows non riding partners and those who have other tasks on the day, to share the time. These mornings have become a highlight of our time in Gladstone for Jill and myself. I have attached a photo of the cafe, which happens to overlook the harbour channel. Also attached is a couple of photo's of a member's Trike - running a turbo 2 litre Cosworth Ford !

Cheers and great riding.

John Wards #971.

The

Captain’s Corner

Hopefully The Captain’ll be back next month with

maybe a whole new bunch of “Road Safety Tips” direct from the

bustle of Hanoi!

As you’ll all be aware, the Captain’s been doing the tourist thing in Viet-

nam for the past 3 weeks so may not meet the deadline for this issue. How-

ever I did notice on his Facebook posts his comments on the chaos on the

roads in Hanoi and yet how patient and tolerant the locals are, unlike the

majority of motorists here in our fair Garden City.

Then I saw the following Facebook post, from a Canterbury local which

more than confirmed Chris’s comments and my own personal thoughts.

“Pulled into gas station (already in a mood) Guy and wife pulled into lane next to me, he got out (with his polished

shoes) and said...you're not on a race track I said...you're just upset mate cause ya wife won't let ya drive fast...he said, I'll remember you...I said...hopefully when I see ya again you've grown some

balls! Good ole Hilux 1

Colorado nil”

I think she’s been watching too many “Dirty Harry” movies and has

trouble separating fact from fiction, “so come on Punk make my day!”

Meet Murtle. My (almost) always

motorcycling companion. At my pre ride talk to Glenfalloch last month, I told the as-

sembled group that we had a least 2 first aid kits and an

emergency locator with us if something went wrong- not

that we expected anything too, but things do happen.

For that reason over three years ago I bought a Spot 3 Per-

sonal Tracker and named it Murtle, mainly because you

can name your tracker and mainly because in dim light it

vaguely resembles a turtle. Murtle the Turtle get it?

The website http://www.findmespot.com will explain the functions better, but the

tracker allows you to pre- save 3 messages of your making that are text or emailed

to people you have elected to receive them, along with your position. My messages

are along the lines of “Having a good ride today” through to “Having some prob-

lems may require someone to pick me up.”

If Fran is taking Murtle tramping the messages are changed to things like “Made it

to the hut safely. Having a good tramp” to “The weather has turned wet, staying an

extra night here”

It also has a SOS button that if activated, automatically advises authorities that you

are in distress and your exact position.

The other major feature is the tracking function. Anyone with access to the internet

and the link you have provided to them, can see your position updated every 10

minutes.

Here is the screenshot of the ride to Glenfalloch.

As this is an international service last time Fran and I were overseas family and

friends could follow us through South America and Europe even when our phones

would not work.

All this does not come cheaply, the annual subscription is about NZ$180 but what

price would you pay to hear the whoop whoop of a helicopter if you were stranded

with either a broken bike or bone(s) many miles from help.

Motorcyclist I feel are often solitary creatures – how many times have you climbed

on your bike headed out on a short ride and 600kms later returned home, often

only choosing the direction of the ride by where you can see the sun shining. With a

Spot or similar device it doesn’t matter if you ride on seal or gravel, if people are

likely to worry about you they can at least see where you are. If you are lucky

enough to own a KTM990 Adventure the Spot tracker fits nicely in the glove box so

another great reason for owning a KTM.

Fortunately except for the ok message I have never needed to use the message ser-

vice, but it is always reassuring to know if it was needed I had the ability to call for

help.

Volunteers

Surprisingly there are times, at home, when I don’t even volunteer to vacuum the house, but then suddenly find myself actually doing it. Haven’t really figured out how that happens yet, but have a sneaky suspicion it’s got something to do with equality of the sexes.

Then of course, we get the situation where an organisation wouldn’t actually func-tion without volunteers, which then proves how vitally important they really are.

Ulysses, of course, is one of those organisations, because every single person, with the exception of the paid Administrator and The Ulyssian Editor, is a volunteer and without them there’d be no Ulysses Club.

Obviously some members are not in an easy position to volunteer, some still have to work for a living and many, of course, have other interests outside of motorcy-cling, all of which is fair enough!

We’re reasonably lucky here in Canterbury as we’ve got over 200 members so fill-ing the 8 committee positions and the 4 or 5 non committee positions should be relatively easy, but it ain’t; and we find the same people do the same jobs year in and year out.

Now the reason for this wee rave is merely to remind you all that we’re already more than halfway through this Uly Year and before we know it nomination forms for the 2017/2018 Committee will be constantly appearing on your very own com-puter screen.

Easy to press the delete button I know, but before you do please give this some se-rious thought as our Club and our Branch just absolutely and honestly cannot func-tion without volunteers, so please put your hand up and give it a go, you could be pleasantly surprised!

For now though, I think I’d better get back to the ironing, while my dear wife cleans and polishes the Harley. Yea Right!

Famous Three and Friends seek out Glenfalloch

Almost as soon as Mike ordered his Africa Twin he was keen to try it out and once it arrived he

said lets do it soon. Allan and Andrea could free up a weekend before the hire season kept them

busy for the summer so fingers crossed that mid September would bless us with good weather I

rang Glenfalloch Station to check they could do lunch for us and put an invite out to others to join

us.

Grant and Julie were keen to come and would help me out if more than 6 people were interested.

In the end nearly 3 times that number turned up, 3 even on road bikes.

Of course once lambing had started I ex-

pected a late snowfall but was not quite ex-

pecting the 25cm’s that settled at Glenfalloch

on Thursday when I rang to see if we are still

ok for lunch. A quick check on Saturday con-

firmed it should be good.

Sunday morning was cool but with brilliant

blue skies so at the meeting point of the Pie

Shop in Sheffield – always good to make it

easy for motorcyclists to find a meeting point

by including food- I gave a detailed talk about

the route we would be taking, the means of

control at corners, and passing on a couple of

tips gained from a recent training day with

Chris Birch.

All this explaining the detailed route went out

the window when after the first corner we came across a farmer shifting ewes and young lambs.

One or two bikes would have been ok but 16 would

have spooked them so a u turn was required – so for

those on the ride I was not already lost at that stage!

We tiki toured through the Lowry Hills and came out

at White Cliffs, crossed the Selwyn River and came

out just South of the Bridge at Glentunnel. A small

side trip past the entrance to the Washpen Falls and

then down the Zig Zag Road to the Rakaia River

bought us to the Reserve by the Rakaia Gorge

The 46 km ride up the side of the Rakaia River is al-

ways one with great views, and this day was stunning.

What I had not fully thought through was that all that

snow melting the fords would have a “little” water in

them. The guys on the adventure bikes generally had

a lot of fun, even Whiskey on his new Versey made a

big splash and what I could see through the flying water seemed to be a big grin on his face! All he

had done was drop about 5 psi out of his road tyres for the ride.

As I was leading the group I then crossed the bridge and went up to the start of the road to Glen-

falloch Station It was close to 20 degrees by now and

some of the group were slow to arrive. Rather than keep

the group waiting in the sun Julie took over the leaders

duties and started up the Valley. Once the others arrived

it became apparent that the Triumph had failed to start

and required a push. After that it was parked on a hill to

be on the safe side.

So while I was supposed to be leading the ride once I

had stopped for some photos I was almost the last to ar-

rive at Glenfalloch for lunch.

Lunch at Glenfalloch is always a treat. Cold roast beef

and other meats , fresh salmon out of the river, salads,

savouries, cheeses and still there was food coming, plus

tea and coffee and that view looking down the Rakaia

River. To give you an idea where Glenfalloch is if you look at a map the only thing separating us

from Harihari –a 7 minute helicopter ride away- is a

thumping big mountain!

After lunch the ride out was whenever people felt like

leaving. I came up at the back to make sure everyone got

out ok giving me an opportunity for a couple of final

photos.

A special thank you to Grant and Julie for taking over

when I was sorting out the stragglers and for those that

came along. Hopefully everyone enjoyed it as much as I

did.

Ride Buddies

Greetings fellow Ulyssians,

Listed in the table below are names and contact details of riders who are willing to give their time to oth-

ers who perhaps feel they need a bit of a helping hand when it comes to riding motorcycles.

Perhaps you’ve just got your ‘L’ plate and want someone to ride with occasionally or you’re back into bikes

after a long absence or perhaps struggling with confidence after a big ‘off’. Whatever the reason, these

people are there to help you gain the the confidence you need so you can enjoy your riding, to keep you

safe while you do and to bounce ideas off or seek advice.

But they are not instructors! They are not there to teach you how to ride a motorcycle, to corner, to brake,

to counter-steer and all the other tricks of the trade. If this is what you’re after we are blessed in Christ-

church to have a number of qualified motorcycle instructors who you should approach.

So, if you think this could be of benefit pick up the phone or send an email. It’s not going to happen

unless you start the process.
