No matter what your type — mystery, romance, horror, fiction, fan- tasy, or anything else — there is always something there for you. In books, you can lose yourself, floating in the limitless abyss of your own imagination. No matter how many timess you read a book, you never tire of it. It is a blessing that we can read, but it’s a great tragedy that some of us choose not to. Those who don’t read are missing out on vivid imagination and visual thinking. The way each char- acter comes to life on the pages is beautiful, and it is a real shame that some of us instead, are turning to our phone screens in search of "en- tertaining content". An- other reason for not reading is the lack of "pic- tures", cited by many which really annoys me. Books are like movies in your head, and you don't need pictures to help you visualise any- thing. Your imagination is more than enough. Reading may not be for everyone, but it is def- initely worth a try. To be at ease with his own self and be respected in every social circle and claim the exalted title of being a 'gen- tleman'. For a layman, a gen- tleman is a person in a well- tailored suit and trousers with a smart tie, smart shirt, etc. But in reality this is not true. A gentleman doesn't need to be a dignified personality with a high status in the social ranking ladder. So what does he need to be? Being a gentleman is not easy. There are various prin- ciples which need to be followed. The most im- portant is never to inflict pain upon others with- out the need to do so, for pain always comes at a price. A gentleman isn't a person who believes in par- tiality and should not be bi- ased towards a certain group of people. He always looks at others from an equal height. Hence, he should be able to un- derstand every problem and every aspect of it. He should be frank, open minded and straightforward with his opin- ions. He should never beat around the bush and dither. He should hold his power in words rather than in violence. Therefore, being polite and courteous should be in his blood. A gentleman should never sulk and feel down all the time. The feeling of being sad should be alien to him. A true gentleman is one whose mind is not clogged with thoughts of melancholy; instead, he should always be cheerful. In reality, a true gentle- man doesn't exist; he never did and never will. It is sim- ply against human nature to be able to have all these per- fect qualities. But trying to be at least a sliver of a gentle- man is possible. It is difficult, yes, but it can be done. So we all can try to be gentlemen, if not for ourselves, but at least for society RAMANA, class X, New Horizon Public School, Mumbai LONESOME CREEK: RITIKA JYALA, class X, DAV Public School, Nerul GOING BACK TO THE PAST I return, a long time after Carrying the future me Hiding the past in the corner of my heart.
