Future of Holt Post Office NR25Over 1,000 signatures were gathered by our postman, Pete Maw, and submitted by him to our MP, Norman Lamb. Thank you everyone in our villages who feel strongly about this cutback. Mr Lamb has expressed his concern about this in a letter to the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Business, Innovations and Skills asking him to address our concerns. Breaks for CarersCarers are being offered the chance to take a break beside the seaside in a holiday home that has just opened. Transport in Baconsthorpe in 1986There are no registered buses (Easter Counties) to the outlying villages such as the ones in our square since they were abolished some time ago. Now Norman Sanders of Sander’s Coaches provides most of the public transport using his 20-strong coach fleet. His depot is in Holt. He has an extensive timetable catering for remote villages. On Tuesday he goes to Holt, on Wednesday to Norwich and on Thursday to Sheringham. A large majority now have cars but most of them are youngish people. A few of the elderly who have moved to Norfolk from elsewhere in retirement also have cars but most of the Norfolk veterans like farmers and farm labourers rely on the bicycle for transportation. An Amazing MotherEvery spring a pair of mallard bring off a large brood of ducklings on the Hole Farm pond. Every day thereafter a duckling disappears due to cold or starvation or predation leaving the parents with a single survivor at the end of the day if they are lucky.This year there were ten ducklings and astonishingly, after three weeks, there were still ten ducklings. They disappeared overnight probably due to lack of food in the drought. They were then sighted in Marlpit Lane after a cross-country walk of over a mile obviously on their way to lusher pastures. These they have now found in Mike Thody’s garden and pond where they are very much at home. What a mother! Robin Carver

Baconsthorpe – John Seaman 2GyfS

John Seaman, formerly of Beckett’s Farm Hempstead, has died peacefully aged 92. Born at Park Farm, Wolterton, John was the eldest son and second of six children. His father, Sidney, was a tenant on the Earl of Orford’s estate. A crack shot, he had started school in Holt and was a boarder at Norwich High School for Boys, in Upper St Giles, where he won the annual rifle competition at least five times.

He got the chance to take on Beckett’s Farm, Hempstead, and Hall Farm, Baconsthorpe, just as farming was emerging from seven decades of depression and remained there for the next 70 years. At the outbreak of the second world war, he joined the Territorial Army and became a small-arms instructor. He also formed a unit of the 202 special Home Guard and was trained to use explosives. As a safe breaker, his official role was to blow safes at County Hall and government offices to deny the enemy official records. Always of an inventive mind as to the next thing in farming, he made a combination seed drill in 1952, many features of which were used in the later Mini-Mat.

Another of his designs was a side-mounted tractor bale loader. This reduced the in-field handling of small bales until 1976 when large bales were introduced. He judged Holt and District Farmers’ Club’s ploughing match for 40 years and was a local tax commissioner for more than a quarter of a century. A keen sportsman, he was shooting and fishing into his eighties.

A Thanksgiving Service for his life, held at St Mary’s Church Baconsthorpe on June 21st, was filled to overflowing with those who had come to pay their respects to a man who for so many years played such a prominent role in this community and beyond. We offer our sincere condolences to Ann, Peter and Sally and their families.

North Barningham – Patronal Festival 2IM3h

Sunday 26th June marked the annual St Peter’s Festival at North Barningham. The congregation of around 55 was treated to some fine singing by the Benefice Choir, which included, in the anthem, a beautiful soprano solo sung by Marilyn. The Palgrave Society, that has played an important part in the preservation of this lovely old church, had members present and all agreed that on such a sunny day spending time in this cool sacred space was an occasion filled with joy and not to be missed. Thank you to Chuffy, Jules and all those others who made the church look magnificent with the floral displays; they too were a joy to behold.

Hempstead – Gravel Pit 26ChF

Although the recommendation by Norfolk County Council planners not to allocate Pond Hills for gravel extraction under the forthcoming Mineral Plan is to be welcomed, their proposal that the Pond Hills site is ‘acceptable in principle’ for gravel extraction can only encourage developers to make planning applications at any time, leaving a continuing threat over this very special area. Anyone who is concerned by this prospect should take advantage of the present consultation period which runs until 15th August 2011. John and Jenny Lewis are moving at the end of this month to Barningham after nearly seventeen years in Matlaske. During that time they have contributed a great deal to life in the village and in particular have given valuable support to the church. Fortunately they will not be too far away and we hope to see them from time to time.

Blackcurrant FoolFruit time is here again, despite the drought, so here is an easy recipe using blackcurrants (serves four)

300 g blackcurrants50 g caster sugar

200 ml pot crème fraîche (half-fat if you are watching the calories!)

142 ml pot double cream (again, you could use whipping cream for a lower-fat content)

1–2 tsps icing sugar

1. Place the blackcurrants in a small pan with the castor sugar and a tablespoon of cold water.

2. Heat gently for 4-5 minutes till the sugar has dissolved and the juice begins to run from the blackcurrants.

3. Cook gently for a few more minutes till the fruit is soft, but taking out a few for decoration before they lose their shape.

4. Crush the remainder with a fork to make a compote and set aside to cool.5. Whip the crème fraîche and the cream together until soft peaks have formed.6. Stir in the icing sugar and three quarters of the blackcurrant compote.7. Lightly fold in the remaining compote to give a rippled effect.8. Divide between four individual glass dishes, top with the reserved blackcurrants

and chill until ready to serve.This goes nicely with thin almond biscuits.
