Family Christian Education Reverend Leanne Ketcham, Interim Minister to Young Families, Children & Youth

It’s always hard to believe that summer has ended and Fall is here with the beginning of school. But, here we are again and with anticipation— there is much excitement happening at KLUC this fall for families!

First, Family Nights began on September 12th, in collaboration with Alpha and Wednesday Worship to provide something for the whole family. The Family Nights for kids will run on the first Wednesday of each month. During this time, kids and adults are invited to explore life and faith in a friendly, open, and informal environment. We will start off with finger foods at 6:45 and at 7pm a host will guide the participants to the programs. Kids are invited to join Pastor Leanne in the gym for a time of games, crafts, and stories as we learn Christian values while forming friendships and having fun. Adults and older youth are invited to participate in Alpha/Wednesday Worship every Wed until Nov. 30 in the chapel. They feature a themed video and discussion on topics like “Who is Jesus?”, “How Can I have Faith?”, and “Why and How Should I Pray?”. The evenings begin and end with music. The best adventures in life are shared, and the adventure of faith is no different. We hope you can join us in this new venture!

The Family Christian Education (FCE) committee is pleased to host two community events this Fall to support and resource families in our community with practical tools for family life, parenting, and wellness. These events are a rich resource for parents and grandparents of children and teens. The FCE committee is passionate about serving the families in our community. Invite a friend to share in these excellent and informative events. Childcare is provided.

On October 9 at 6:30 pm, bestselling parenting book author, CBC radio parenting columnist, and inspiring speaker, Ann Douglas will speak about stress and anxiety with her keynote presentation, “Parenting in an Age of Anxiety: A Stress and Anxiety Toolkit for Parents.”

On November 13 at 6:30 pm, non-profit director, educator, and dynamic speaker Brett Ullman will lead us through foundational questions on family relationships, and give practical tools for talking with kids about health, sexuality, media, and more in his keynote presentation, “Navigating Everything.”

Finally, Pageant season is upon us. This is my first pageant at KLUC and I cannot wait to witness the amazing production as children, youth, and adults contribute their gifts to proclaiming the good news of Christ’s birth. For those interested in being part of the pageant, email me at [email protected].

Page 3: 06 A Special Day of Welcome and Promise 11 Flea Market

Continued from page 2 These events are only the specifics of what God is doing here at KLUC with children, youth, and young families. There are relationships and friendships being built, and faith in God that is growing. There is a story in John 4 where Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at a well. He asks her for a drink of water, and in her incredulity, she asks him why he would ask her that. Jesus, a Jew, and she, a Samaritan, were not supposed to mingle. By all outside perspectives, this was an encounter that should not have happened, and yet Jesus crosses all the boundary lines to meet this woman where she is in her life. She runs back to her village and says, “Come and meet the man who told me everything about myself. Could he be the messiah?”

For many people, the notion of a God who wants anything to do with them is only met with incredulity. But the love of God in Jesus Christ is the love that meets us where we are at, crossing any walls or bound-aries that we may think are there. Our hope and prayer for all these events are that they would be en-counters with the living messiah, Jesus, so that we might know ourselves and God’s great love for us and the whole world.

Cyber-Seniors Program Returns!

We have now run 3 sessions of this popular and fun 6-week learning experience in which seniors are each paired with a local high school youth mentor to help them become more computer literate (laptop/tablet/smart phone). For some that means starting from the very basics and for others it means learning more about social media skills. For many it introduces a wonderful new way to communicate with their grandchildren and friends.

Due to the overwhelmingly positive feedback from both the participating seniors and youth mentors, we will be scheduling our next Cyber-Senior program from Oct 18 - Nov 22, 2018. These classes will run each Thursday in the church gymnasium from 4:15-5:15 pm. Please note: Seniors must provide their own mobile device (laptop/tablet/smart phone).

If you know a senior or youth who might enjoy and benefit from this program, please contact Donna-Lee through the church office at [email protected] to register. Volunteer hours are available for the youth.

Leaning In

“Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7

We start a new season and no matter what your age (or stage of school-ing) you can feel the clock change with all it’s attendant anxieties and antici-pations. Our Bible/Book study groups have resumed and this year we’re using a resource that comes out of a professor at Yale, Matthew Croasmun. He offers a great way to go into the future.

The little book is called, “Let Me Ask You a Question.” It’s a study based on the questions Jesus asked his followers, listeners, and opponents. Often, we think of our relationship with God as asking God questions (Why? For one) or for needs. This study puts you in conversation with Jesus responding to his questions. It’s a refreshing approach. But the first question that is posed is a wonderful way to go into the future, a new season, or a new day.

In Mark 10:51, Jesus asks the blind beggar Bartimaeus, “What do you want me to do for you?” Bartimaeus who has spent the whole day by the roadside saying the same thing, “Have mercy on me!” hoping for a few coins could have been expected to do the same with this itinerant rabbi but he asks instead, “My teacher, let me see again.” Croasmun points Jesus’ question at us, “What do you want me to do for you”, and asks, “Are you going to ask for pennies?”

I fell in love with this study because of this question and the way Croasmun encourages us to answer it. He heartens us not to hold back in anyway. Don’t respond in a way that you think God might want to hear or to earn God’s approval. Search your heart and answer the God who loves you honestly, from the depths of your pain or your hope. Another book I’m reading, Mark Batterson’s “Chase the Lion” has a parallel sentiment suggesting, “…if your dream doesn’t scare you, it’s too small.” Or, as Nike phrases it in their recent ad, “Don’t ask if your dreams are crazy. Ask if they’re crazy enough.”

“What do you want me to do for you?” As the leaves turn, as the days grow shorter, as the frost replaces the morning dew, it’s a wonderful question to warm your life and to allow the living God to answer. Lean into divine love and allow that love to consume your worries. You’re free to be honest and invited to trust the response of one who loves you beyond all we can ask or imagine.

In anticipation of what we cannot expect from the one who asks,

Rev. Hugh

PS If you want to know how I answered. Come to one of our dynamic study groups or ask me.

Lean into divine love and allow

that love to consume your

worries.

At this time of the year, we review our operating results to the end of August and compare those results to the budget that we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year. We analyze the major variances, both positive and negative and satisfy ourselves that we understand why the numbers are sometimes not exact-ly as we thought they would be.

So, how are we doing? Well, the results to the end of August are about where we want them to be. Our overall revenue number is a bit below where we would like it to be, but that is more than offset by a sav-ings in expenses, so one is offsetting the other (more or less).

As always, we want to support the important work being done by the various committees that are working hard to keep our church strong and growing.

Work on the Operating Budget for 2019 will commence next month, with a final draft to be presented to the Official Board and the congregation in February, 2019.

Auditorium Project is Underway! By Don MacInnes

On Sept. 4th the demolition of the ceiling(s) in the Auditorium commenced. Floor protection was installed. Barriers to contain dust and prevent access were installed and the ceiling tiles began to fall, exposing one of the multiple ceilings and the crew heartily attacked it as well. Then the wiring was disconnected and the lighting fixtures were removed. Then the metal T-bar ceiling was taken down. The Fire and Safety workers came in to disconnect the fire alarm and the bells in this area.

The contractor was careful not to damage the sprinkler heads and the wiring which was exposed, and which has to be traced and identified as to what it is connected to. It is expected that the last drywall ceiling were down by Friday September 7, at which time we were able to know just how much we would be able to locate above the new ceiling.

The one item of interest which was discovered was an empty package of Buckingham cigarettes, which some worker had left there, waiting to be discovered.

We are on schedule for the project and look forward to returning it to full use later in October.

September 9th was a special day at Kingsway-Lambton for a number of reasons.

We saw the official launch of the early “Fresh Start” service. This shorter, more relaxed and intimate format was well received during its trial period in the spring. See page 1 for more information.

The Worship Service was a Covenanting Service. A covenant is a pledge or promise that brings people together for a special purpose. On that day, we made a special promise to the children of our congregational family, to their teachers, to each other, and to new ministers serving us, so together we may grow in the joy, confidence, mission, and freedom of God’s loving promise to all in Jesus.

In addition to the blessings on and promises to the teachers and children of our congregation, we officially welcomed two new ministers to our church:

Reverend Leanne Ketcham is the Interim Minister to Young Families, Children and Youth, filling in while Moses Kang is on Parental Leave. Leanne has already had a significant and positive impact on our community, and has many fun plans for the coming months (see page 2).

Stephen Milton joins us as Student Intern Minister. He has just been here for a few weeks, but his talents and enthusiasm are already apparent. Among other things, he will be guiding the Fresh Start services. Read more about Stephen on page 9.

The service was followed by the annual Welcome Back Barbeque, which was held outside on the East Lawn. Despite a slight chill in the air, the event was well attended. Attendees caught up with friends they hadn’t seen for a while, as they dined on yummy burgers, hot dogs, and an impressive array of salads and desserts. Heartfelt thanks go to all those involved in organizing, setting up, and cleaning up after this event. It was a wonderful “kickoff” to the new church year.

A Special Day of Welcome and Promise

Welcome Ian Grundy, Director of Music Ministry!

We are blessed and delighted to welcome our new Director of Music Ministry, Ian Grundy, who joined us in September. Ian brings a wealth of talent, experience, and energy to our congregation.

An accomplished conductor, organist and harpsichordist, Ian received his early musical education at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto. A student of Canada's pre-eminent organ pedagogue Douglas Bodle from the age of twelve, he was appointed Organ Scholar of Trinity College Chapel in the mid-70's. He has been a finalist in the Royal Canadian College of Organists Organ Competition, recipient of the Peter Screaton Skinner Prize for organ playing, the Canadian Music Talent Foundation Scholarship and the William Erving Fairclough Scholarship. From 1985 to 1988, Ian studied orchestral conducting with leading conductors form Canada, the USA and Europe, and attended the Accadamia Musicale Chigiane in Siena Italy, studying under the Soviet conductor Guennadi Rosdhestvensky. In 1988 he was the winner of the prestigious Heinz Unger Conducting Competition.

Ian has had a distinguished career as a choral conductor and organist. For five years he was the conductor of the Niagara Symphony Chorus, and has held positions as Director of Music at leading Toronto churches since 1970. As an orchestral conductor he has conducted many of the orchestras in southern Ontario. He continues to maintain a busy schedule as a music educator, accompanist and conductor. Ian is the founding conductor of VocalPoint Chamber Choir.

Fond Farewell to Hilary Apfelstadt

On June 24th, the Choir bid adieu to Hilary, and expressed their appreciation for all of Hilary’s contributions over the years. We wish Hilary joy and blessings as she moves on, and hope to see (and hear!) her back at Kingsway-Lambton often.

Energy Savings at Kingsway-Lambton By Don MacInnes

8

Early this year, Kingsway-Lambton was invited by Faith and the Common Good to join their new Energy Benchmarking Programme to help faith communities take practical and economical climate change action by lowering their energy use and emissions. Energy efficiency is the fastest, cheapest, and largest single resource solution for simultaneously saving energy, saving money, and preventing hydrocarbon emissions.

We have signed agreements with Toronto Hydro and Enbridge gas to allow them to monitor our utilization of energy for the next three years and we will be able to compare how we are doing with other communities in their programme.

There have been numerous incentives offered to try to assist customers to decrease their energy utilization. Faith and the Common Good drew our attention to a particularly attractive programme offered by the Small Business Lighting Program of Toronto Hydro. When the Base Incentive Amount was added to the Standard Incentive Amount being offered, it meant that almost 70% of the cost of retrofitting every non-fluorescent bulb in our building was covered by the programme.

In total, 232 bulbs were retrofitted with LED bulbs through the building. We are now able to provide better lighting in the sanctuary, while reducing the heat generated by the previous bulbs, as well as the energy costs, too!

It is estimated that the pay-back for our portion of the costs will be recovered in the first year!

"Thank you, how generous of you!"

Don't we all like to be told those words?

The theme of the Gifts and Giving Committee's No-vember Stewardship Campaign this year is:

GRATITUDE AND GENEROSITY

As members of Kingsway-Lambton United Church, you will be asked to show your appreciation of God's work by pledging your financial support and considering an increase of your givings.

Information and pledge cards will be mailed to you soon. As you know, taking responsibility to complete your pledge is vital for the operations of your church.

To all: "Thank you, how generous of you!"

2018

We extend a warm welcome to Stephen Milton, Kingsway Lambton’s new intern. Stephen has just completed his Master of Divinity degree at U of T’s Emmanuel College. This is his second career; his first was making documentary films for The Discovery Channel and National Geographic. Stephen comes to the church with a toolkit of media skills, including social media experience. He will be presiding over the Fresh Start services until December, and is also keen to get more experience doing pastoral care. He comes to us from Bloor Street United Church, and Roncesvalles United. He lives with his wife Amanda McFarlan, and six children, most of whom have graduated from high school, who come and go as they please.

Welcome Stephen Milton!

To see Stephen’s filmmaking skills in action, check out the Kingsway-Lambton United Church YouTube channel, where Stephen and others post thoughtful reflections and previews of upcoming meditations.

Have you noticed something new in the Order of Service in the past few weeks? We have updated the logo that represents Kingsway-Lambton United Church. The previous image, a sketch of the bell tower, has served us well over the past years. This new logo offers a more contemporary representation of our church.

Flea Market Treasures Reach Far Afield

Do you ever wonder where do some of the Flea Market unsold items go? This letter explains how our leftovers become a treasure to someone else . . .

I have just received some books from my aunt Adair Bernys to take to the Majengo Children's Home in Tanzania. She also told me that you donated many amazing books last year as well. We are so grateful! We have just opened a small library room at Majengo for the kids to read in, and do their homework. Your donations have helped make that room even more filled with great books! We are so thankful for your donation. All the very best, Simone

Sanctuary Decorators Needed!

Kingsway-Lambton is in need of two enthusiastic individuals to decorate the sanctuary at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas when we “dress up” our house of worship to celebrate important holidays. Volunteers will receive coaching so that they feel comfortable to take on the role.

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to contribute your time and creativity, this position would be a great fit. Please contact Rita MacDonald ([email protected] or 416-236-0028) for more information.

Share a Cup and a Smile

The Coffee Hour Team is extending an invitation to join us! We provide the opportunity to create community and fellowship following our weekly service through the ministry of serving (coffee, tea, and cookies). Hours are flexible, the schedule can be tailored to suit you, and the pay is terrific – the grateful smiles are worth the hour or two every few months to which we ask you to commit. Please let us know how to best reach you by emailing [email protected].

A Special Anniversary

According to the newspaper account, “Pink and white flowers and white tapers decorated Kingsway-Lambton United Church for the ceremony in which Donna Anne Brown became the bride of David Wallace Siddal. Rev. Stanley Tose officiated.” This happy event took place on June 26th, 1958.

Donna and David have deep roots with Kingsway-Lambton. Their parents were among the founding mem-bers, over 80 years ago, and Edna Siddall, David’s mother, worked for a time as the Financial Secretary for the church.

Sixty years later, Donna and David joyously celebrated this special anniversary with family and friends, including some of the wedding party. Congratulations, David and Donna!
