    Abstract:

In this practical determination of the colorfastness of textiles to dry-cleaning was done. Also the

multi fiber strip is evaluated for cross staining and its rating was done. This test method gives anindication of results to be obtained from three commercial dry-cleaning. These tests are very

    important from quality control aspect.

    1. Introduction1.1.Background:Dry cleaning is the cleaning of fabrics with organic solvents such as petroleum solvent,

perchloroethylene or fluorocarbon. This test method is intended for determining the

colorfastness of textiles to all kinds to dry cleaning. This test method gives an indication of

results to be obtained from three commercial dry cleanings.

    1.2.Objective:

y To grade the sample obtained after dry cleaning.y To grade the staining check on multi fiber strip.

1.3.Theory:Fabric is washed with organic solvent under specified conditions and grading was done. The

multi fiber strip used to check staining rate consists of acetate, cotton, nylon, polyester and

    acrylic.

    2. Equipment and Materials:y Chromatic transference scaley Grey scale for stainingy Per chloro ethyleney Detergent solutiony Dry clean samplesy Original samplesy Multi fiber strip

    3. Procedure:i. A bag was prepared for each specimen with inside dimensions of 1010 cm by using the

un-dyed cotton twill cloth by sewing together two squares of this cloth around three

    sides.

ii. The specimen and 10 steel balls were placed inside the bag and the bag was closed bysewing.

iii. Perchloroethylene & detergent solution was prepared by the following method.iv. A 1000 mL volumetric flask was filled partially with perchloroethylene and 10 mL of

    detergent was added to it.

    v.

Shaking was done to make the solution homogeneous.vi. Perchloroethylene was added to make the total volume up to 1000 mL.vii. 0.6 mL of water was added to the solution.

viii. Shaking was done until the solution was no longer cloudy.ix. 200 mL perchloroethylene detergent solution was added to a stainless steel container. The

bag containing the specimen and the steel discs was placed in container and the containerwas closed & was placed in washer for 30 min at 30 2C.

    x. Rating of the color change of the test specimens was done using the Gray Scale for ColorChange.

xi. Then multi fiber strips were taken to check the staining rate. One the original multi fiberstrip and other the strip which was attached to sample during dry cleaning.

    Acetate 4-5

    Cotton 4-5

    Nylon 4-5

    Polyester 4-5

    Acrylic 4-5

    wool 4-5

    5. Discussion:The rating which ranges between 4-5 shows that fastness to dry cleaning and staining is verygood while when it gradually decreases, it shows the fastness is gradually becoming poor.

    6. Conclusion:The given sample has very good color fastness to dry cleaning. It showed a very little change

in its color due to organic solvent. The rate of staining for each fabric was 4-5 which showed

    very low staining.
