16.3 Formation of the Solar System

According to geologic dating of rocks from Earth, the moon, and asteroids, the age of the solar system is around 4.6 billion years.

16.3 Formation of the Solar System

From a cloud of dust and gas collapsing due to gravity a flat rotating disk is formed and in the center the sun is formed while the planets are formed from the materials farther out. This is why all the planets lie in one plane and orbits in the same direction.

16.3 Formation of the Solar System

The planets formed out of orbiting material mostly through the process of Accretion. Accretion occurs when small particles collide and stick together to form larger masses.

16.3 Formation of the Solar System

Radiation from the new born sun exerted pressure and the lighter material was pushed farther away to form gas giant planets and heavier materials pulled nearer to form the inner planets.

16.3 The Moon

Surface of the moon is covered with craters caused by asteroids impact early in the history of the solar system. Dark patches on the surface are seas of lava that flowed from the moon’s interior.
