Some nations (Moslem) and some people (traditional Chinese) have a lunar calendar like the Hebrews.

Genesis 1:14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years."

Each Hebrew month was a MOONth.

A month began when the first crescent of the waxing moon was observed by the priests.

The priests would then blow the ram's horn.

The message was relayed by horn blast or signal fire throughout the land.

The moon-regulated calendar

told the Hebrews when to

celebrate…

…and when to

remember.

These remembrances focused on the LORD and what he had done, was doing, and would do for his people.

Numbers 10:10 …at your times of rejoicing– your appointed feasts and New Moon festivals-- you are to sound the trumpets over your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings,and they will be a memorial for you before your God. I am the LORD your God."

The moon-regulated

calendar was a shadow

Jesus is reality.

New Moons and set feasts proclaimed what the God of free and faithful grace . . .

had done, was doing, and would do in Christ.

Colossians 2:16,17 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.

In 35½ years a lunar calendar would fall a full

year behind the sun.

Festival dates tied to the rhythm of

nature (harvesting)

would fall almost 11

days "off" (earlier)

each year.

A MOONth is 29.5306 days long.

The time it takes the earth to circle the sun in a year is 365.2422 days.

Twelve MOONths are 10.875 days short of a solar year..

Seven times during the space of 19 years the priests would lengthen the year by adding a “second” 12th month.

This kept the monthly calendar

in line with the

agricultural festivals.

The Hebrew year began at the Equinox

When days and nights are of equal length.

But which one?

Autumnal Equinox

Vernal Equinox

At the time of Israel's departure from Egypt, spring was set as the beginning of the year.

Later "the turn of the year" (i.e., ROSH HASHANAH) is set at the end of summer.

In spring the religious calendar began.

In fall the civil calendar began.

Exodus 12:2,3 This month is to be for you … the first month of your year…. on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a [Passover] lamb…

Exodus 34:22 Celebrate … the Feast of Ingathering [of summer fruit] at the turn of the year.

On a potsherd (a broken piece of pottery) from Gezer a 10th century BC Hebrew describes the farmer's year, month by month.

The Gezer inscription begins the year at the fall equinox.

Hebrew men were required to appear before the LORD three times each year…

Exodus 23:14-17 Three times a year you are to celebrate a festival to me.

Three times a year all the men are to appear before the Sovereign LORD.

Celebrate the Feast of Harvest with the firstfruits of the crops you sow in your field.

Celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread; for seven days eat bread made without yeast, as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Abib, for in that month you came out of Egypt. "No one is to appear before me empty-handed.

…and come with offerings.

Pilgrimage festivals remembered. . .

Deuteronomy 16:2,3 Sacrifice as the Passover to the LORD your God an animal from your flock or herd at the place the LORD will choose as a dwelling for his Name. Do not eat it with bread made with yeast, but for seven days eat unleavened bread, the bread of affliction, because you left Egypt in haste-- so that all the days of your life you may remember the time of your departure from Egypt. Exodus 12:7,12,13 Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs. The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.


Deuteronomy 16:10,11 Count off seven weeks from the time you begin to put the sickle to the standing grain. Then celebrate the Feast of Weeks to the LORD your God by giving a freewill offering in proportion to the blessings the LORD your God has given you. … And rejoice before the LORD your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name-- you, your sons and daughters, your menservants and maidservants, the Levites in your towns, and the aliens, the fatherless and the widows living among you. Remember that you were slaves in Egypt …

Exodus 19:1-3,5-6,11 … In the third month after the Israelites left Egypt--on the very day–they came to the Desert of Sinai. After they set Desert of Sinai, … and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain. Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain [and said] … be ready by the third day…”

God's appearance to Israel on Mt. Sinai when he established his covenant with them, happened 50 days after the Passover, which occurred on the even of their departure from Egypt.

Leviticus 23:41-43 Celebrate this as a festival to the LORD for seven days each year. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come; celebrate it in the seventh month. Live in temporary shelters for seven days: All native-born Israelites are to live in such shelters so your descendants will know that I had the Israelites live in temporary shelters when I brought them out of Egypt.

Pilgrimage festivals celebrated God‘s goodness to the farmer in the present . . .


Exodus 12:3,5,6 on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family… The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats. Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the people of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight.

John 6:53,54 Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.
