System of Rice Intensification (SRI) at Magballo:C/O J.Basiao
• Uses three spacings with organic fertilizer, available from the market, applied.
• Compare with the TQPM with a good head start using inorganic fertilizer; but farmers prefer this.
Total Quality Productivity Management (TQPM):PhilRice
• This is essentially similar to the System of Rice Intensification (Margate-Intermittent Irrigation & Drainage) except a booster inorganic fertilizer was used as basal fertilizer application.
This is much moreGreener than nextPhotograph of SRI
Land preparation is very important in increasing rice production. Engr. Salazar, during his spare time on weekends, personally worked to make his Research and Demonstration on SSRI successful.
Organic fertilizer, produced from Engr. Salazar’s poultry wastes, is applied prior to transplanting which is one of the most important features of SSRI.
Seedbed preparation and seeding of certified seeds, a HYBRID MESTIZO variety from PhilRice. Seedlings are grown in organic soil 2 cm. thick on top of plastic canvas. 200 grams or germinated seeds are broadcasted in an area of 3 square meters.
Care and maintenance of growing seedlings adopting modified Dapog scheme. Organic fertilizer is spread/applied evenly right after the germinated seeds are broadcasted in the seedbed. Seedlings are transplanted as early as 8 days
Engr. Salazar supervised transplanting adopting straight row planting spaced 40 cm x 40 cm at one (1) plant per hill
TILLERING STAGE (45 days old)
Rice is not an aquatic plant, it must not be always with water. With SSRI, ricefield is provided with water when weeding, cultivation and rotavation, which is done using the versatile rotary weeder. This will promote aeration which is very vital to plant growth.
Weeding using his own designed rotary weeder. This is a versatile rotary weeder because it has a floater, a cultivator, and a rotavator.
SSRI Common practice

the difference in plants’ color and stand.
Mr. Miyazato of Asian Development Bank (ADB), counting the tillers in the one hectare (1 ha.) Demonstration Farm conducted by Engr. Bong Salazar, the Salazar’s System of Rice Intensification (SSRI)
ATI researcher conduct weekly monitoring on the progress of SSRI, such as number of tillers, plant, pest
and diseases and other relevant information.
Minus-One (Fertilizer) Element
• This is a PhilRice initiative at the Can-sujan SRIP Techno-Demo Farms, which tries to eliminate the cumbersome approach of soil testing to determine the appropriate fertilizer formulation to use.
• Rice plants are grown in plastic bag filled with soil from the farmer’s field of which receive say N+P+K-Trace Elements; N+P+0K+Trace, etc.
• The most vigorous plant would indicate the most logical fertilizer formulation required.
