I was able to visit Mt. Tabor, which is considered the traditional site for the transfiguration of our Lord. A Zigzag path going up marked the way to the top of the mountain. Normally it takes almost two hours to make it to the top. But when you have a group of eager, energetic, and task oriented seminarians it only takes you forty-five minutes. When we finally arrived to the top, out of breath, tired, and at the sight of a rested and smiling faculty just waiting for us, we were bewildered. We were awestruck by the vista of the beautiful valley and the peace that was communicated in this graceful and isolated mountain in Lower Galilee. We were able to feel and sense that something marvelous took place there. Jesus, at Mt. Tabor, gave some of the Apostles a glimpse of his divine glory. Within the context of prayer he shares with them an incredible sight. As Jesus prayed he was taken up to another world. We see his face bathed in magnificence and light. Jesus is surrounded by Moses, the lawgiver, and Elijah, the prophet, designating him as the Law of all laws and the prophet of all prophets. Therefore Jesus is law, lawgiver, prophet, and divine. This event helped the Apostles who were still trying to figure him out. It all points to Jesus’ mission involving his suffering and death. We must remember that he is going to Jerusalem and Jerusalem means Calvary and Calvary means the cross. Life tells us that nothing worthwhile is ever simple or straightforward. In Jesus’ transfiguration we see a connection between suffering and death, the resurrection and glory. The Lord’s transfiguration is also meant to fortify the faith in those who believe in him. It speaks about the gradual process of change that takes place in our lives when we accompany Jesus. We are called to walk with Jesus. We are called to accompany him in his search for the truth, the beautiful, and the divine. In other words, we must be with him in his love for people, in his sufferings, and resurrection. We are called to be one with Jesus as we take our daily worries and concerns remembering that we are to be transformed and transfigured. Finally Jesus’ transfiguration is one of liberation. When Peter suggests the construction of three tents he doesn't really know what he is asking. We cannot limit a moment of grace to time and space. God is bigger than that. God is a free reality calling us also to be free of anything that stands in the way of our own salvation and transfiguration. But Jesus’ transfiguration is not a thing of the past. He continues being transfigured as we celebrate the Eucharist and allow him to transform bread and vine into his body and blood. He continues being transfigured as we enable others to change their physical and spiritual quality of life remembering that whatever we do for others we are doing it for Jesus. When we help them to change, Jesus also changes. Finally, when we change, when we convert, when we turn our hearts to the Lord, we become also transfigured into something luminous, holy, and divine. We become likeness and image of God, His icon, which is Jesus, His beloved son. Many years ago I was honored to witness the death of a very holy woman. As she approached her last moment of earthly life she took one last breath, and her face became radiant, peaceful, and beautiful. I am convinced that she saw the face of God. She was transfigured! Even close to death we are called to do so. We call upon God so that we may be able to continue seeing his glory in all so that we may be transfigured. Only in such we shall be immortal and only in such we shall be transfigured.

Pude visitar el Monte Tabor, que se considera el sitio tradicional para la transfiguración de nuestro Señor. Un camino en zigzag que subía marcaba el camino hacia la cima de la montaña. Normalmente lleva casi dos horas llegar a la cima. Pero cuando tienes un grupo de seminaristas ansiosos, enérgicos y orientados a las tareas, sólo te lleva cuarenta y cinco minutos. Cuando finalmente llegamos a la cima, sin aliento, cansados, y ante la vista de una facultad descansada y sonriente que nos esperaba, estábamos desconcertados. Nos sorprendió la vista del hermoso valle y la paz que se comunicaba en esta montaña elegante y aislada en la Baja Galilea. Pudimos sentir y percibir que algo maravilloso ocurrió allí. Jesús, en el Monte Tabor, dio a algunos de los Apóstoles un vistazo de su gloria divina. En el contexto de la oración, comparte con ellos una vista increíble. Cuando Jesús oró, fue llevado a otro mundo. Vemos su rostro bañado en magnificencia y luz. Jesús está rodeado por Moisés, el legislador, y Elías, el profeta, designándolo como la Ley de todas las leyes y el profeta de todos los profetas. Por lo tanto, Jesús es ley, legislador, profeta y divino. Este evento ayudó a los Apóstoles que todavía estaban tratando de resolverlo. Todo apunta a la misión de Jesús que involucra su sufrimiento y

muerte. Debemos recordar que él va a Jerusalén y Jerusalén significa Calvario y Calvario significa la cruz. La vida nos dice que nada que valga la pena es nunca simple o directo. En la transfiguración de Jesús vemos una conexión entre el sufrimiento y la muerte, la resurrección y

la gloria. La transfiguración del Señor también tiene el propósito de fortalecer la fe en aquellos que creen en él. Habla sobre el proceso gradual de cambio que tiene lugar en nuestras vidas cuando acompañamos a Jesús. Estamos llamados a caminar con Jesús. Estamos llamados a acompañarlo en su búsqueda de la verdad, lo bello y lo divino. En otras palabras, debemos estar con él en su amor por las personas, en sus sufrimientos y resurrección. Estamos llamados a ser uno con Jesús mientras tomamos nuestras inquietudes y preocupaciones diarias recordando que debemos ser transformados y transfigurados. Finalmente, la transfiguración de Jesús es de

liberación. Cuando Pedro sugiere la construcción de tres carpas, realmente no sabe lo que está preguntando. No podemos limitar un momento de gracia al tiempo y al espacio. Dios es más grande que eso. Dios es una realidad libre que nos llama también a ser libres

de cualquier cosa que se interponga en el camino de nuestra propia salvación y transfiguración. Pero la transfiguración de Jesús no es cosa del pasado. Continúa transfigurado mientras celebramos la Eucaristía y le permitimos transformar el pan y la vid en su cuerpo y sangre. Él continúa transfigurado a medida que permitimos que otros cambien su calidad de vida física y espiritual recordando que cualquier cosa que hagamos por los demás lo estamos haciendo por Jesús. Cuando les ayudamos a cambiar, Jesús también cambia. Finalmente, cuando cambiamos, cuando nos convertimos, cuando volvemos nuestros corazones al Señor, también nos transfiguramos en algo luminoso, santo y divino. Nos convertimos en semejanza e imagen de Dios, su icono, que es Jesús, su hijo amado. Hace muchos años tuve el honor de presenciar la muerte de una mujer muy santa. Cuando se acercaba a su último momento de vida terrenal, respiró por última vez y su rostro se volvió radiante, tranquilo y hermoso. Estoy convencido de que ella vio el rostro de Dios. ¡Ella se transfiguró! Incluso cerca de la muerte estamos llamados a hacerlo. Invocamos a Dios para que podamos continuar viendo su gloria en todos para que podamos transfigurarnos. Sólo en eso seremos inmortales y sólo en eso seremos transfigurados.

One way our candidates for the Sacrament of Confirmation experience the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is through their participation in a retreat. Our six second-year students did so on Saturday of last weekend, when they took part in the Vicariate III Spirit Day Confirmation Retreat. This was the third year the retreat took place at the Monsignor Thiele Center, which included sixty-one participants from Saint Mark, Saint Aloysius, and Holy Innocents. Following is the main goal of Spirit Day, taken from the retreat manual: Through the power of the Holy Spirit and the faith of the parish community, the goal of Spirit Day Confirmation Retreat is to provide an opportunity for Confirmation candidates to experience an inner spiritual awakening that will inspire them to strengthen their commitment to a relationship with Christ and His Church. Congratulations to all the young men and women who participated in this year’s retreat!

Una manera en que nuestros candidatos para el Sacramento de la Confirmación experimentan la morada del Espíritu Santo es a través de su participación en un retiro. Nuestros seis estudiantes de segundo año lo hicieron el sábado del pasado fin de semana, cuando participaron en el Retiro de Confirmación del Vicariato III Spirit Day. Este fue el tercer año en que el retiro tuvo lugar en el Centro Monseñor Thiele, en el cual participaron sesenta y un jóvenes de las parroquias de San Marcos, San Luis Gonzaga y Santas Inocentes. El siguiente es el objetivo principal del Día del Espíritu, tomado del manual de retiro: A través del poder del Espíritu Santo y la fe de la comunidad parroquial, el objetivo del Retiro de Confirmación del Día del Espíritu es proporcionar una oportunidad para que los candidatos de Confirmación experimenten un despertar espiritual interior que los inspirará a fortalecer su compromiso con una relación con Cristo y Su Iglesia. ¡Felicidades a todos los jóvenes que participaron en el retiro de este año!

The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets every Wednesday in the Thiele Center from 10am to noon. This group knits and crochets prayer shawls while praying individually and as a group for the recipient of each shawl. These shawls represent a visible symbol of our prayers and presence. Shawls have been given to those facing

challenging times, illness or to celebrate a special moment to bring the comfort and warmth of God’s love and healing. For more information on how to request a prayer shawl please contact the parish office, 773-278-4808.

El Ministerio Mantas de Oración se reúne todos los miércoles en el Centro Pastoral de 10am a medio día. Este grupo hace mantas de oración hechos de tejido o de ganchillo mientras rezan individualmente y como grupo para que el receptor de cada manta. Estas mantas representan un símbolo visible de nuestras oraciones y presencia. Las mantas se han dado a aquellos que enfrentan tiempos difíciles, enfermedad o para celebrar un momento especial para llevar el apoyo y la calidez del amor de Dios y la sanación.
