Goodbye Excuses, Hello Essential. We’ve all been there. Exposed up on a mountain when that unexpected storm blows in. Meanwhile, that expensive shell jacket is sitting down in the car. You fi gured you probably wouldn’t need it, and besides, it’s just so heavy and bulky. Well, how’s that working out for you now? With C.A.M.P.’s new line of Essential statement pieces, you have offi cially run out of excuses not to carry the essentials with you in the mountains. Essential statement pieces are all you need to keep you safe, warm and dry when you are out doing the things you love. This line is so packable and so lightweight that it won’t slow you down and, most importantly, will always be there, ready for action. From the hyperlight goose-down ED Atom Jacket to the best-selling two-person Minima 2 tent (a miracle of lightweight engineering at just 2 kilograms), there is an Essential piece of gear for every situation. So when that surprise storm strikes, don’t just be ready, be Essential.

Four Pillars of Essential: Lightness. Packability. Performance. Functionality. These are the paragons of design that our Research and Development team strove to meet over the years they spent diligently crafting the Essential line. The idea was simple: not only did Essential items need to be lightweight and packable, but they also needed to perform really well in all conditions. We’ve built Essential gear in nearly every category, from outerwear to packs, sleeping bags, tents, sleeping mats and gaiters. This gear isn’t just designed to save your life in an emergency situation; it’s built to be used.

Born From Tradition, Built For The Future: C.A.M.P. is a 124-year-old company located in the beautiful, historic village of Premana, Italy, in the Varrone Valley of the Central Alps. Premana’s heritage is in metallurgy, a thriving craft for which Premana is world famous. C.A.M.P. has made a name for itself in the adventure world by taking century-old manufacturing techniques that value quality, and bringing those practices into the present cutting edge. Simply put, we know how to make stuff, whether it’s forging crampons and ice tools or stitching together down-fi lled jackets and sleeping bags. We only build gear that will withstand the harshest alpine environments, and our innovation means that we are always fi nding new ways to tackle the adventures of our dreams with ever stronger confi dence.

Stripped To Perfection: Antoine de Saint-Exupéry noted that “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing more to take away.” It was with this inspiration that our team has worked to fi nd ways to reduce weight, increase packability and simplify every detail of our garments, packs and sleeping gear in order to achieve the best performance possible. We pushed our designers harder than they’ve ever been pushed to fi nd innovative solutions to age-old questions in mountaineering. We brought in the most technologically advanced synthetic and natural lightweight materials, then turned those materials into the smartest, sharpest products possible. The result is an unparalleled line that includes clothing, packs and gear for every type of wet, windy, cold situation. From the waterproof, breathable Protection Line, to the famous, windproof activewear Magic Line and the rainshell B-Dry EVO Line, these pieces pack down to fi t in the palm of your hand and clip easily to a harness. So no matter what the objective, Essential always has a place in your pack or a spot on your rack.

Uncommon Outerwear: C.A.M.P. is celebrated for our mountaineering equipment such as our ice tools and superlight crampons, which have played crucial roles in achieving groundbreaking ascents around the world. We wanted to bring this same degree of sharp performance to the clothing we wear. Often, what you wear on an important ascent will infl uence the outcome as much—if not more—than the other equipment you carry. Essential outerwear rises to this challenge to take climbers and ski mountaineers to new heights—faster, safer and with uncommon style. Our Essential line is built from three main fabrics: Araneum is a highly durable, lightweight ripstop nylon with some truly amazing properties such as being completely windproof without any coatings. This allows it deliver properties of dry insulation as it the fabric is able to dry with active body heat rather than simply trapping the moisture like so many other fabrics. B-Dry Evo is a silicone-treated nylon with a water column clocking in at 1500 mm making it our most packable truly waterproof fabric. And last but not least, Hitex 15, which adds clutch DWR protection to hyperlight ripstop nylon for super packable, waterproof breathability. Working with these innovative fabrics has allowed us to imagine an entirely new, lightweight approach to dressing for the mountains.

Essential Elements Combined: Each piece in the Essential line uses these different materials to their best advantages, again so that nothing is wasted, nothing is left to take away and we are left with the best fi nal result. Down is one of the most amazing insulators we know. High-quality goose-down feathers compress really well, then regain their original loft. Technically, loft is the space between the feathers, and this space traps heat and is therefore responsible for down’s insulating properties. In general, higher loft means more insulation and better packability. However, when down gets wet, its feathers clump together and lose their ability to regain loft and therefore to insulate. This is why we chose the waterproof Hitex 15 fabric as the outer shell on our line of down-fi lled ED Protection Jackets. Hitex 15 is a unique hyperlight, packable, durable ripstop nylon with a special DWR (Durable Water Repellent) treatment that keeps water from ever reaching the down feathers. The combination of these materials allow us to offer the benefi ts of down even when conditions turn wet and snowy in alpine environments.

Synthetic Solutions: Yet as we all know, down also has its shortcomings—when it’s soaked, it stops insulating. For very wet environments, synthetic insulation is the way to go. Because we wanted our Essential line to be complete for any mountain-weather situation you’d never hope to encounter, we designed the Neutrino Jacket and Vest (available Fall 2013). We paired PrimaLoft® with our proprietary Araneum fabric to create garments that assure amazing warmth no matter how bad the weather gets. PrimaLoft’s® microfi bers guarantee permanent water resistance, facilitate drying and assure great breathability, packability and lightness.

ED Micro Jacket Lady EVOFlash Competition Anorak Dual Slim Jacket

march 2013

Araneum is Pure Magic: Our proprietary Araneum shell fabric is uncoated, yet completely windproof, lightweight and durable. With no coating, expect Araneum to offer great breathability. Further, you can wash it repeatedly without negatively affecting its performance. For weighing next to nothing and being highly packable, it also does an incredible job of trapping heat, making it perfect for ski mountaineering or alpine climbing. Araneum is a versatile champion that pairs well with down—as in the ED Micro Jacket EVO, the ED Micro Jacket Lady EVO and in some of the new products available for Fall 2013. But Araneum also shines on its own. The Magic Jacket is a hero that does the work of jackets many times its weight and size. It’s a fantastic shell for alpinism, climbing, ski mountaineering, hiking, running and cycling. Why? Because it packs down smaller than your fi st, making it easy to carry, then offers an enormous amount of weather repellency and insulation through a sophisticated kind of dry-heat capture that only an uncoated fabric can provide. It is so good at regulating active body heat that climbers and skiers often fail to take it off once they’ve put it on until they’ve reached the end of their adventure. Similarly, the Flash Competition Anorak is an Araneum anorak that has no back, allowing you to quickly put it on (or take it off) without removing your ski-touring pack. No other shell on the market offers this much instant warmth, protection and functionality.

C.A.M.P. in Action: Lorenzo Holzknecht has relied on lightweight C.A.M.P. products to win many challenging ski-mountaineering competitions in the Alps. The Speed helmet and the Race 290 crampons have been trusted companions during some of his most grueling races. But he is even more excited about some of the new designs appearing in the Essential line, especially the highly anticipated Dual Slim Jacket. Tailored with a profi led cut to keep the insulating layers close to your body, the Dual Slim Jacket is a down-synthetic hybrid that incorporates each material in crucial spots where it can perform best. “In the coldest weeks of the year, when temperatures drop drastically, I have worn the Dual Slim Jacket while going uphill,” he marvels. “The combination of down and PrimaLoft® assures the right warmth and Araneum fabric means amazing breathability, even when I’m pumping sweat.” Layering is key, too, and Lorenzo says he will pair the Dual Slim Jacket underneath the B-Dry Jacket EVO to protect him from rain or snow, and trap heat when he needs it. This combination creates the ultimate lightweight system that can handle any condition.

Minima 1 SLEssential Light Mat

The Four-Pound Bivy. C.A.M.P. is proud of the fact that, for less than the weight of a pair of technical mountain boots, we are offering a total bivy setup that comes in at only 1875 grams (4.13 pounds). We’re talking about the ED 300 Evolution sleeping bag (600 grams), the Essential Light Mat (315 grams) and the Minima 1 SL tent (960 grams including poles and stakes). This is an astonishing breakthrough that could defi ne the difference between comfort and epic. Ski-mountaineer and adventure racer Bryan Wickenhauser says, “C.A.M.P.’s Essential line is one of the most undervalued innovations in light and fast mountain travel that I expect to see in my lifetime. The whole category has literally brought my game to completely new levels.”

Bryan Wickenhauser (USA)Wisconsin born, Colorado bred. Bryan Wickenhauser, 41, is a unique blend of these two distinctly different cultures. The difference between Bryan and other rando racers is that he can ski. His alpine-racing roots on the ice bumps of the Midwest make powder and corn seem easy for him. Yet Bryan also manages to distinguish himself from solid backcountry skiers because he can skin … very fast and very hard.

Light and Fast: Everyone is talking about light and fast, and sometimes it’s a phrase that can seem like empty lingo. But it’s important to remember that light and fast really does defi ne today’s brand of modern alpinism. Alpine routes that once required many bivouacs are now commonly climbed in a single day. By using gear that simply weighs less, people are able to move faster and safer through alpine terrain, all while experiencing the freedom and self-reliance brought on by climbing light. C.A.M.P. athlete Denis Urubko is a world-class alpinist, who has completed futuristic ascents in Kazakhstan and Europe. He dreams of a new route in alpine-style on Everest’s southwest face—an audacious undertaking that will stretch the limits of what we thought possible. Big dreams like Denis’ all begin with the simple concept: understanding how less weight and less space can lead to top performances.

Pack it Up, Pack it In, Pack it Down: Every now and then, a piece of gear comes around that is truly indispensable—something you can’t imagine being without. While many of the Essential products fall into this category, a true standout is the Phantom pack. Whether it’s on multi-pitch rock climbs, summit bids or just lightweight day trips into the mountains, the Phantom pack is your ideal discrete partner. Martin Riegler, one of Italy’s most accomplished climbers, says, “It’s the ideal pack for multi-pitch routes when you need to carry food, water, clothing and other essential items in case of an emergency. Especially on overhanging routes, a bulky pack can create problems, from messing with your center of gravity to making it diffi cult to just chalk up! The Phantom is compact and light, and sits properly on the torso, allowing you to climb without even realizing it’s there.” The Phantom also packs away into its own small pocket, so it can be stowed away easily. Every multi-pitch climber should have one. Paolo Maggioni, one of the Italian Alpine Club’s instructors, explains that it is much more effi cient for each climber to carry their own pack—as opposed to the other option, where the second climber carries one large, heavy pack. “When each climber carries his or her own items, such as approach shoes, food and water,” says Maggioni, “the climbing is much more fun!”.

Paolo Maggioni (ITA)Paolo Maggioni (born 1982) is a mountaineering instructor for the Italian Alpine Club. He is not a professional alpinist but he has climbed several major routes such as the Bonatti on the Grand Capucin, Mont Blanc, and the Vinatzer on the Marmolada, in the Dolomites. He also completed some climbs in Morocco and, in 2009, took part in an expedition in the Garhwal Himalaya.

Martin Riegler (ITA)Italian Martin Riegler (born 1980) is an amazing, world-class all-rounder. Mountains are essential to his life, from hiking with parents when he was a child to his incredible free climbs on the huge overhanging walls of the Dolomites. Among his several major achievements both on rock and ice is his Ramadan Roue (5.11b/c, A2, 1,100 meters) on Kako Peak (4,900 meters), Karakoram, Pakistan.

This Is Essential: We don’t want you leaving your gear in the car or at basecamp just because you think you’ll be slowed down with the extra weight. We’ve burned the midnight oil brainstorming ways to make Essential gear today’s paradigms of perfect minimalism. And we want it to get used! Now, with the Essential line, there are no excuses for not being prepared. We’ve distilled each garment, each sleeping bag, each pack down to its essence: to the point where there is nothing left to take away and leaving only adventures to be had, souls to be fulfi lled.
