1 RBI cuts repo rate by 25 basis points to

75 per cent

i The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cut

down repo rate by 25 basis points to 75

percent from 775 percent with

immediate effect citing that the fiscal

consolidation was better than what

numbers show and that the combined

fiscal deficit is much lower due to the

government transferring more funds to

the states

However RBI has kept the cash reserve

ratio (CRR) unchanged at 4 percent

ii It is the second change in rates by 25

basis points since January 2015 With this

change RBI is signaling that it was

convinced by the fiscal consolidation

measures announced in the Budget

iii This is the first time that the Reserve

Bank of India has announced a monetary

policy action ahead of markets opening

2 Spectrum auction begins govt eyes

over Rs 80000 crore revenue

i The much awaited spectrum auction

wherein 8 companies are bidding to

acquire airwaves in four bands started

ii The auction is the biggest ever sale of

2G and 3G airwaves which may fetch the

government over Rs 82000 crore

iii A total of 38075 MHz of spectrum in

three bands mdash the premium 900 MHz

band 1800 MHz and 800 MHz mdash is put

on sale besides 5 MHz in the 2100 MHz

band across 17 out of 22 telecom areas in

the country

i President Pranab Mukherjee gave his

assent to the Maharashtra Animal

Preservation (Amendment) Bill 1995 It

received assent nearly after 19 years it

was passed by State Assembly in 1995

ii This bill amends Maharashtra Animal

Preservation Act 1976 and bans slaughter

of bulls and bullocks in the state As per

the provisions of new Act anyone found

to be selling beef or in possession of it can

be jailed for 5 years and fined Rs 10000

iii However this Act allows slaughter of

water buffaloes which provides carabeef

that is generally considered as an inferior

quality meat

1 RBI adopted Inflation Targeting as a

policy tool for monetary regulation

i Inflation targeting was in news recently

as Union Government and Reserve Bank

of India (RBI) on 20 February 2015 signed

an agreement on Monetary Policy

Framework As per the agreement RBI

accepted to focus on flexible inflation

targeting

ii Inflation targeting is defined as an

economic policy in which a central bank

estimates or decides for a medium-term

target inflation rate In Indian context as

per the agreement inflation targeting

means that the RBI will have to maintain

iii Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based

inflation targets below six per cent by

January 2016 and four per cent from

2016-17 with a band of plusminus two

per cent

iv The transition from monetary targeting

suggested by Chakravarty Committee

(1988) to Inflation targeting suggested by

Urijit Patel Committee is similar to the

practice adopted by central banks in

developed countries

2 RBI eases norms for home loans for up

to Rs 10 lakh

i Giving a boost to affordable housing

the RBI eased the norms for home loans

for up to Rs 10 lakh by allowing banks to

include stamp duty and registration

charges to the cost of a unit

ii These charges used to form around 15

per cent of the cost of the house and

place a burden on borrowers

iii As per the current practice banks do

not include stamp duty registration and

other documentation charges in the cost

of housing property

iv The RBI also said that in cases of

projects sponsored by government

statutory authorities banks may disburse

the loans as per the payment stages

prescribed by such authorities even

where payments sought from house

buyers are not linked to the stages of

construction

adopted climate change targets for

emissions by 2030

ii These targets were agreed by leaders of

the 28 EU member-states at a summit in

October 2014 but now have been officially

forwarded to the United Nations

iii United States also has formally

announced its intention to reduce

emissions by 26-28 per cent in 2025

compared with their level in 2005 It

should be noted that US accounts for 12

per cent of global greenhouse gases

emissions

4 Fifteen crore Aadhar cards linked with

bank accounts

i The National Payments Corporation of

India on Friday announced linking of 15

crore Aadhar cards with various bank

accounts in India

ii With this achievement NPCI has moved

a step closer to map its target of l inking all

17 crore DBT accounts with Aadhaar

numbers by 30 June 2015

iii It is expected that soon all beneficiaries

of all types of government subsidiaries

and benefit transfers will be brought

under the linkage programme Such a

framework of electronic benefit transfer

would not only be unique but will be one

of the largest in the world

iv Apart from this linking programme

NPCI is also nodal agency for all retail

payment systems under the Pradhan

Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) which

planet Ceres

i NASArsquos Dawn spacecraft has created

history by becoming the first mission to

achieve orbit around the dwarf planet

Ceres with an aim of providing new

insights and capturing images from the

distant world

ii The spacecraft was approximately

61000 kilometres from Ceres when it was

captured by the dwarf planetrsquos gravity

iii Since its discovery in 1801 Ceres was

known as a planet then an asteroid and

later a dwarf planet

implemented in both rural and urban

areas of the state covering first-born girl

child of Scheduled Caste (SC) and Below

Poverty Line (BPL) families and all second

girl child born on or after January 22 2015

of all families

iii Under this scheme the first girl child

born on or after January 22 2015 in SC

and BPL families will be eligible to receive

Rs 21000 Similarly all second girl child

born on or after January 22 2015 of all

families will get Rs 21000

iv He also announced to increase the

amount of Indira Gandhi Mahila Shakti

2 Global food prices dip to 5-year low in

February

i Global food prices fell to a nearly five-

year low in February this year on

increased supply of key food items and

strong US dollar according to the United

Nations food agency FAO

ii Food prices averaged at 1794 points in

February down from 1812 points in

January and 2086 points in February

2014 the Food and Agriculture

Organisationrsquos price index showed

iii According to FAO international sugar

prices fell by 49 per cent cereal prices

were down by 3 2 per cent and meat

1 RBI cuts repo rate by 25 basis points to

75 per cent

i The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cut

down repo rate by 25 basis points to 75

percent from 775 percent with

immediate effect citing that the fiscal

consolidation was better than what

numbers show and that the combined

fiscal deficit is much lower due to the

government transferring more funds to

the states

However RBI has kept the cash reserve

ratio (CRR) unchanged at 4 percent

ii It is the second change in rates by 25

basis points since January 2015 With this

change RBI is signaling that it was

convinced by the fiscal consolidation

measures announced in the Budget

iii This is the first time that the Reserve

Bank of India has announced a monetary

policy action ahead of markets opening

2G and 3G airwaves which may fetch the

three bands mdash the premium 900 MHz

band 1800 MHz and 800 MHz mdash is put

on sale besides 5 MHz in the 2100 MHz

band across 17 out of 22 telecom areas in

the country
