    1. INTRODUCTION

    1.1 PREAMBLE

The Textile Institute of Pakistan (TIP) is a Chartered Institute by the government

of Sindh and is authorized to award degrees and certificates. The degrees

awarded by TIP are recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), the

approval and controlling authority for higher education institutes in Pakistan.

Degrees awarded by TIP are considered as premium degrees in textiles and

    related field in the country.

One of the main objectives of higher education institutions is knowledge creation

through research and experiments. Teaching is always secondary to research. It

is through research that a nation can prosper. An institution is therefore judged

on the basis of its contribution to research. Research works carried out in an

institution are also published in the form of research articles. Preferably every

university/institute should publish its own research journals. Publication of

research journals and research papers by its faculty are among the major

criteria for assessing an institutions standards. It is therefore essential that TIPconcentrates on empirical industry related research through its students and

    faculty.

    1.2 PURPOSE OF RESEARCH PROJECTS

The main purpose of final year research projects at an undergraduate level is to

    teach the students to:

Carry out research work in a methodical and professional manner. Understand issues and problems. Research on a given problem or issue through literature survey and review. Carry out field or survey research. Carry out laboratory work (where necessary). Generate information and data. Manage strict deadlines. Interpret and compile results effectively.

  • 7/28/2019 (03) Guidelines for Project Report

    5/27

Guidelines & Procedure for conducting Final Year Projects 5

Find solution(s) to the problem. Present findings or solutions in form of a quality written report. Create knowledge base.

    1.3 BENEFITS OF RESEARCH PROJECTS

Following benefits could be effectively derived from the final year projects:

Students are groomed and trained to carry out research. This adds value totheir personal and professional development.

Students are given exposure to work as a team. Effective knowledge base can be developed. Applied industrial research could help improve academia-industry linkages Help develop TIP brand and trust amongst the stakeholders. TIP could start industry based consultancy. Faculty and students can publish research articles and papers and

eventually we could publish our own research journal.

Help generate funds for industrial research.

Could help improve facultys practical knowledge about the current practicesand problems faced by the industry.

Help students with their job placements.

All final year research projects are conducted in a group of 3 students. However,in cases where it is not possible to have a group of 3, groups of 2 students are

    also allowed.

    2.2 FINALIZING THE SUPERVISORS

Based on the preferred area of research, the students should meet therelevant faculty members for a discussion on possible topic(s) of research.

List of faculty supervisors available for final year projects for the year2012/13 is attached in the Appendix 1.
