Affection versus Love

Affection (or Moh in Gurbani) is said to be the feeling of a person towards only a certain

select number of people. Consequently, for all the rest, there is no such feeling of affection.

This gives rise to two categories of people in one's world view, one who are known as

'mine', and the second who become 'their'.

Love (or Prem in Gurbani) is said to be the feeling of universal affection towards all people

with no exceptions. Consequently, in such a world view, there are no categories and

everyone appears equal, like articulated in the following Gurbani verse,

Ek pita ekas ke hum baarik tu mera gur haai ||

(Sri Aad Granth, Page 611)

which says that we all are children of one cosmic father.

However, in casual conversation people tend to use the word 'love' for the feeling towards

their special dear ones, but that is only emotional attachment. Love can only be universal,

while the attachment is largely bounded by the physical world. The following Gurbani

verse makes this distinction clear,

Prem padarath naam hai bhaai maya moh binaas ||

(Sri Aad Granth, Page 640)

which means that love as the essential element obtained through the correct understanding

of cosmic truth of equality leads to the destruction of attachment of the temporal physical

world.

Mayadhaari

Being a Mayadhaari is not about being rich. It is about putting your desires and motives in to

the physical world. For that matter, even a hermit who possesses no money and wears scant

clothing, if puts his desire of seeing God in an idol (physical matter), shall be called a

Mayadhaari.

Everything that is to be seen through the eyes (i.e. the physical world) is Maya, and the one

who perceives what is being seen, alone is not Maya. Therefore, our endeavor should be to

connect with ourselves (i.e. Aatam-Darsan), than to desire the physical things. The physical

necessities for life sustenance, are the things needed for the body (Maya again), and should

never become the desires or motivation for the Aatam, i.e. you.
