CONCEPT
Concept is an idea that integrate various ELEMENTS into a whole
ELEMENTS
Ideas Notions Thoughts Observation
Idea
• Specific
• Concrete Thought (as a result of understanding, insight or observation)
Examples:
• way to orient building• the placement of kitchen• the best means to benefit from natural ventilation • the value of energy conservation, so on.
Notion
• Connotation of randomness (suggestion of uncertainty) . • Insubstantial, unsubstantiated or often trivial • Does not make any belief about appropriateness
Examples:
• a bird-case might be that of a bird in flight.• ventilation without window!• As a concept: it would not be appropriate.
Concept
• have appropriateness
• Support Intentions and Goal
• Respect each project’s unique characteristics and restriction.

Concept
• possibilities_ Truth hiding in even glib remarks.
• Some of NOTION seem as absurd, irrelevant and hypothetical
But it can find/resolve the critical problems
• It may be necessary to INVENT notion as a step in formulating an appropriate concept
• Concept is similar to IDEA ( it’s a result of understanding)
• Concept is a thought concerning the way several elements / characteristics combined in a single thing.
• Concept is antithesis of NOTION.
Concept in architecture ?
1. Concept is an idea that integrate various ASPECTS into a whole
ASPECTS
• Programmatic Requirement • Context• Belief
2. It’s a result of concentrated and imaginative effort to bring apparently dissimilar things together.3. Concept don’t have to be INVENTED by the architect
CONCEPT

Notion(random idea)
Concept(central idea)
Scenario(revolution of
idea)
Idea(specific thought)
Forming of Concept
• Ask the following questions:
1. Purpose: What do you wish to get?
2. Comparisons: What others are getting?
3. Viewpoints: How does it look from different angles/levels?
4. Problems: What is going wrong?
Then, explain by just one single idea;
That is your CONCEPT !
Exercise: Formulate Concept for a School.
Remember: Errors in memorizing is a fault but in understanding an inspiration!
5 TYPES OF CONCEPTS
CONCEPT
• Analogy = Doctors are like Artists• Metaphor/similes = Building Is a tree• Essences = University Acts as an Democratic institution
• Direct response = Museum Circulation Must be circular
• Ideals = Space Should be “Universal Space”
