  • True Day/Night Cameras

Sony uses an mechanical IR cut filter to mask IR light from the sensor during the day

In low light the filter removed to take in a wider spectrum of light

Some manufacturers electronically modify the picture by amplifying the brightness which gives a washed out picture

Sony Generation 6th camera has the new feature to adjust the threshold of brightness level of Day/Night Mode.

  • What is True Day/Night?

Sony Video Security Certified Professional Training Course Ver.1.2 45

The human eye can see between 400nm and 700nm. Sony True Day/Night cameras are sensitive between

400nm and 900nm. Being sensitive to a greater spectrum of light means Sony cameras can work in

low light and take advantage of Infra Red Lighting

  • IR Cut Filters

Sony Video Security Certified Professional Training Course Ver.1.2 46

During periods when we have plenty of light the cameras sensor needs to be masked by the IR Cut Filter. This ensures the image is not overexposed and has true Color reproduction

    Sensor

    Sensor

All cameras need to have an IR Cut Filter ensuring the image in daylight has true Color reproduction

During periods of low lighting the IR Cut Filter is automatically removed from the sensor. This allows more light into the sensor and enables the camera to be sensitive to IR lighting

    IR Cut Filter

  • Easy Focus (a.k.a. Auto Back Focus) Sync with Day/Night Sony Generation 6th cameras V/E series (except SNC-EB630B /EB600B) support

Easy Focus synchronized with Day/Night Easy Focus works when switching day and night mode with some 3rd party lens.

Day: Visible light Night: Infrared light

NOTE: Easy focus needs few seconds (around 10 seconds) until the camera refocuses.

Sony Video Security Certified Professional Training Course Ver.1.2 47

  • Installation with Infrared light

In dark scenes you can install Infrared lighting. Between 700 nm and 850 nm will give a clear, visible image if used with a True Day/Night cameras

  • Video Encoding

Sony Video Security Certified Professional Training Course Ver.1.2 55

    1. Image is captured by the camera

    2. The camera encodes the video using a codec which enables the video to be transmitted over a network

    3. The media stream is transmitted over the Ethernet Interface

    101010101010

  • Traditional Video Encoding MJPEG - Motion JPEG Very good picture quality Smooth fast forward and rewind Very large image sizes Higher bandwidth Higher storage

MPEG 4 Customisable constant bit rates Picture quality not as good as MJPEG About 50% more efficient than MJPEG Cheaper for storage and Bandwidth

Sony Video Security Certified Professional Training Course Ver.1.2 56

  • This is designed for high definition video encoding and delivers excellent picture quality for low bit rate situations

When bandwidth and storage is limited the quality of an H.264 image will be considerably better than MPEG 4 or JPEG encoding

Sony Video Security Certified Professional Training Course Ver.1.2 57

  • Encoding with H.264 Compression

    Ratio Picture Quality

    Processing Power Latency Usage Example

JPEG Low Low Very Low Very Low One Shot Image, Still Monitoring & Recording

MPEG 4 Medium Medium Low Low Monitoring and Recording in MPEG 4 Format

H.264 Baseline Profile High High Medium Medium

    Monitoring (PC, Smartphone, Tablet)

H.264 Main Profile Better Better High High HD Recording

H.264 High Profile Best Best Highest Highest Full HD Recording

Sony Video Security Certified Professional Training Course Ver.1.2 58

From 6th Generation we remove MPEG 4 and work with more sophisticated H.264 profiles designed to compress

    HD and Full HD

  • There are two common data encoding methods for motion based compression with video security network cameras,

constant bit rate (CBR) and variable bit rate (VBR). Now Sony has developed a new encoding method, variable bit rate with cap (VBR with cap), which provides high picture quality, while efficiently conserving storage resources. The encoding method affects the overall quality of the image and the bandwidth required for transmission, so selecting the appropriate encoding method is an important consideration when designing a surveillance system.

Choose the best encoding method for your application

59 Sony Video Security Certified Professional Training Course Ver.1.2

  • Constant Bit Rate (CBR) Sonys constant bit rate (CBR) algorithm optimizes the image quality while maintaining a constant bit rate from the camera. It allows users to easily predict required data-storage and network capacity since the amount of data can be calculated based on the predefined bit rate value. CBR is ideal for applications where the network bandwidth is limited or where bandwidth and storage capacity must be accurately planned, for example, applications where a large-scale network with a large number of cameras or wireless networks are used.

Sony Video Security Certified Professional Training Course Ver.1.2 60

  • Variable Bit Rate (VBR) Encoding method where the bit rate varies proportionally to the amount of movement and detail in the scene. In a simple scene (such as an empty corridor) the compression ratio can be higher providing a lower bit rate. As the level of detail and movement increases the compression ratio can be reduced to maintain high image quality, this creates much higher bit rates, but provides the best image. But, with this varying bit rate, the network bandwidth and storage requirement are of course unpredictable, potentially varying from 256 kbps to 25600 kbps, so a system designer must provide enough storage and plan the network infrastructure to cope with the peak bit rate. This method provides excellent picture quality in complex scenes such as continuously moving traffics and always busy streets.

Sony Video Security Certified Professional Training Course Ver.1.2 61

  • Variable Bit Rate with Cap (VBR with Cap) VBR with cap is an advanced version of the VBR method. Users can set a maximum target bit rate (cap) for encoding, but the bit rate is free to vary, responding changes in image complexity. When the bit rate exceeds the cap value, the compression ratio is automatically adjusted to drop the bit rate below the target value, reducing network load while maintaining high picture quality. For planning purposes, by referring to the cap value, users can plan storage resources in a similar manner with the CBR encoding.

Sony Video Security Certified Professional Training Course Ver.1.2 62

  • VBR with Cap and Frame Skip To improve the response time of the cap algorithm, an optional frame skip function is also available. This will skip frames when the limit is exceeded, immediately reducing the bit rate below the target cap level. In this mode the frame-rate can be reduced by up to a half to conserve bandwidth. The VBR with cap is ideally suited to locations where there are periods of low activity (so bandwidth is low), but any activity must be captured in high quality without compromising planned storage and bandwidth requirements. For applications where the bit rate frequently changes according to traffic conditions of people and cars, such as building lobbies, corridors, school compounds, and highways.

Sony Video Security Certified Professional Training Course Ver.1.2 63
