Board of Governors General Information President’s Letter

Dear Fellow Members,

The winter doldrums are upon us. This is the time of year when the restaurant business suffers. It is also true for dining clubs, such as ours. This year, your Board of Governors and your officers, have approved, a three month trial during January, February and March, to try to lessen the impact of the expected decrease in dining revenue. For this trial period, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will be designated as casual dining evenings. The dress code for these evenings will be “business casual” as is our lunch dress code. No sneakers, flip flops or jeans are acceptable and jackets for men are not required. Our hope is that this effort will help the Club’s revenue projections and draw more business to our wonderful dining experience.

With this temporary change in our dress code, it is a terrific opportunity to invite guests to join you and allow them to experience our Club’s hospitality. If each of us is able to bring in one new member, our membership will be complete. Remember, the initiation fee has been reduced to $100 for the next 100 members. Now is the time to take advantage of these changes and invite friends and family to join. If each of us does our part, our Club will continue to have a bright future.

As part of the ongoing work to revitalize the Club, with the help of Vice President Sean Galvin and our Manager Marty McGovern, the party bar is undergoing a makeover. Stop by and check it out. It will be spectacular when finished.

Stay safe and warm this winter.

Yours truly,C. Robert FoyPresident

Message from The General Manager

To all of our Members,

It is nice to report that the Club has been busy with Neighborhood Club members and Milton Hoosic Club’s members utilizing the Club.

Again this year Valentine’s Night will be held on Thursday, February 14th. This is a popular night at the Club, so please make your reservations early. Joel as usual will create a mouth watering “Sweetheart Menu”. The dinner, together with romantic music, will create a memorable evening for all.

Work is being done on the party bar. It is our goal to improve the appearance of the party bar and the room itself to make it more desirable to potential guests and wedding planners.

I would like to remind you to think of the Club when you are planning a meeting, wedding, shower or any special event. As a member, you have access to special rates and the best event planners on the South Shore!

I look forward to seeing everyone at the Club.

Best Wishes,

Marty

ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEEAfter days of decorating over the last two weekends

in November, the Club was ready to entertain for the holidays. Volunteer staff, members and entertainment committee spent countless hours to prepare for this time of year, and the result was wonderful. The new tree and the living room mantel were highlights this year with many members and their families having holiday pictures taken in front of them.

The Christmas Social was our first event, attended by 100 members and guests dancing to the music of Tom Pittman and Linda and enjoying the delicious cuisine prepared by Joel.

It was a full house, as usual, for Breakfast with Santa. There was a great variety of breakfast foods served to over 120 children, parents and grandparents. Mr and Mrs Claus arrived to deliver the gifts to over 70 children who patiently awaited their arrival by having their faces painted, and busying themselves with games and ornament making. Again, a great success.

New Year’s Eve was a glorious evening, hampered only by the many members who had to cancel because of having developed the flu. The chef’s choices for the evening were as elegant as they were delicious. The atmosphere for the evening was relaxing and comfortable. Seating time was your choice, as was the entrée. Most everyone chose to linger over dessert and coffee and then adjourned to the ballroom for dancing and awaiting the arrival of the New Year. Music was provided by the Joe Contrino trio.

The event we have all been waiting for is coming January 26th, the popular Chef/Manager Night. Marty, Joel and staff show off their culinary talents with a spectacular meal and a unforgettable elegant evening.

BOWLING COMMITTEEOn Sunday, January 13, 26 bowlers representing both

The alleys were sparkling (Thank you, Alex) and the bowlers were revved up and ready to play. For the first string each participant bowled one ball per box; for the second string each participant bowled two balls per box. Members Bob Martell and Barbara Walsh won prizes for the highest scores in the member category; guests Michael Dalton and Maryalice Gallagher won prizes for highest scores in the guest category. Neighborhood Club Improvements

Marty has started working on the much needed face lift for the party bar. So far, new molding on the walls have been installed, the bar has received new molding, paint and a beautiful new granite countertop. Be sure to check in and see the progress on this project which is being completely in small stages as to not interfere with our banquet events. The next steps include a new wall display for liquor, impressive lighting and an over all updated and sophisticated atmosphere.

BOOK CLUB IDonna Sweeney chose Live By Night by Dennis Lehane for our January read. Most of us thought it was certainly not his best and gave it an overall rating of 7 for story content and writing. For me, too many gangster characters and organized crime mayhem. Our next meeting is February 5th and the book chosen by Roseann, is Save Me by Lisa Scottoline, A New York Times best selling author, Edwards award winning author and President of Mystery writers of America. Good reading to all.

BOOK CLUB IIJanuary’s book Club selection , Mrs. Tom Thumb

by Melanie Benjamin sparked a lively discussion full of opinions. February book is Light Between The Oceans by M.L. Stedman. “After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day’s journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season and shore leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby.” This will be discussed Tuesday, February 19, 2013.

Paula McLain’s book, Paris Wife, was suggested for March and Live by Night by Dennis Lehane was chosen as the book for April. for those of you looking for suggestions for a good read, try Penny Vincenzi Trilogy - 1. No Angel, 2. Something Dangerous, 3. Into Temptation.

Maureen Collins will be contact person until April, when Rachel will return. Please call Maureen if you would like to join in any discussion and she will make your reservations for lunch.

Valentine’s Day

Every Feb. 14, men and women (but mostly men) are expected to express their affection for their significant other by “surprising” them with gifts of flowers, candy, jewelry, dining and greeting cards in the annual love-fest known as Valentine’s Day.

Although the exact roots of Valentine’s Day are unknown, historians speculate that once upon a time -- we’re talking third century AD here -- the Roman emperor forbade young soldiers to wed, believing that single men made better fighters. However, a rebel bishop named Valentine continued to wed young couples in secrecy. Eventually he was discovered and put to death, but not before writing a note to the jailer’s daughter, which was signed, “From your Valentine.”

Whether or not Bishop Valentine was actually murdered on Feb. 14 remains a mystery, but that particular day was declared Valentine’s Day some 220 years after the clergyman’s death sentence.

Here’s a few fun facts about how Valentine’s Day evolved over the last few centuries:

1. We eat chocolate on Valentine’s Day because in the old days, it was supposed to inspire love. We’ve all heard that chocolate is an aphrodisiac, and while that may be true, the candy ritual is far older than that. In medieval times, women would eat sweet and sometimes bizarre food -- including chocolate -- the night before Valentine’s Day. This was supposed to inspire dreams in which they would envision their future spouse.

2. Cupid is misrepresented by Valentine’s Day. The original Cupid was a demigod in Roman mythology; he was the son of Venus, goddess of beauty and love. Over centuries, Christianity mingled with the old belief system, and Cupid was reduced to a cherub, one of the choirs of angels -- which is why these days he is only found stamped on Valentine’s Day apparel as a chubby baby sporting a bow and arrow and impossibly tiny wings.

3. The first mass-produced Valentine’s Day cards were produced in the 1840s. The invention of this time-honored tradition is credited to a woman by the name of Esther Howland of Massachusetts, who developed a successful business by making Valentines out of lace, paper and floral décor. She is often referred to as “the Mother of the American Valentine.”

4. Richard Cadbury created the first box of Valentine’s Day chocolate. Another Valentine pioneer of the 1800s, Richard Cadbury cashed in on the holiday by using his father’s chocolate company to create the first marketed box of love-symbolizing candy. Although, Cadbury’s motives might have been two-fold -- doctors of the same era often prescribed chocolate to patients who were suffering from heartbreak.
