Resting on God's Word

"He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword. When he saw that this met with approval among the Jews, he proceed-ed to seize Peter also... The night before Herod was to bring him to tri-al, Peter was sleeping" Acts 12:2-3, 6 Sleep is a rare commodity when you are in trouble. Your mind races a hundred miles an hour, zipping and zagging here and there. And there is no off-switch. The threat of death would scare most of us sleepless. But not the Apostle Peter. Herod liked his poll numbers after he executed the Apostle James. So he had Peter arrested presumably to fan his popularity with the crowd. The threat of death was not lost on Peter. But he was perfectly at peace.

Resting On God’s Word (continued from page 1)

He probably was sleeping so deeply that the rattling of his chains when he moved did not wake him up, even though it surely dis-turbed the two soldiers to which he was chained. You could almost hear his rhythmic snoring in the darkness. He was so sound asleep that a very bright light did not wake him either. "Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell" (v. 7). In fact, he was so sound asleep that the angel "struck Peter on the side and woke him up" (v. 7). This was no gentle nudge. Vine's Dictionary of New Testa-ment Words defines "struck" as "literally, of giving a blow with the hand, or fist." The guy was just totally, completely out. The question most of us will have is, how can he sleep so sound-ly with the threat of death hanging over him? Over the years, Peter's impetuousness had been replaced with complete trust on the Lord Je-sus and His Word. Everything the Lord said that will happen, happened. From Peter's denials, to Jesus' arrest, His death, His resurrection. And Jesus already told Peter when and how he was going to die. "'When you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.' Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God" (John 21:18-19). Herod thought he was in charge. Peter knew better. So he slept. Life threatens us with all kinds of harm. Our peace and rest, and yes, sleep, will not come from the world backing off. Our peace and restful sleep can only come from trusting the Lord Jesus and His Word. Jesus said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have over-come the world" (John 16:33). And, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" (John 14:27). The world just thinks it has control over our lives. We know better. Zzzzzzzzzzz.
