Blackheath Halls Opera is thrilled to present its tenth anniversary production Bizet’s Carmen. Once again members of the community aged from 8 to 80 perform alongside a wonderful cast of professionals and Trinity Laban students in four exciting performances.
Carmen is the most popular work from French composer Georges Bizet. For this Bizet took inspiration from the popular novella by Prosper Mérimée, which had enticed French readers with exotic tales of Spain. With a heady combination of passion, sensuality and violence, the opera contains many much-loved numbers, such as Carmen’s seductive Habanera and Escamillo’s rousing Toreador Song, in which he celebrates the thrill of the bullfight.

It never occurred to me I needed to meet her to ‘Find out who I was’, as it didn’t seem likely I’d discover I was someone different to who I thought I was.
“Could it turn out I was three stone lighter than I thought, or I spoke Italian or supported Arsenal or had a fear of Liquorice Allsorts? “But after the birth of my own son, I realised it’s quite an event to have a child, and she may well remember giving birth to me, and maybe even the adoption.”TICKETS: £15

The Rattler is a new interactive retelling of Rumpelstiltskin. Each performance begins with a series of music and craft workshops and a colourful pageant.

PROFESSOR ROBERT WINSTONModifying Humans: Where does genetics stop?
THURSDAY 9 JUNE 8pm | Great Hall
SP
OK
EN
WO
RD
Professor of Science and Society and Emeritus Professor of Fertility Studies at Imperial College London, Lord Robert Winston, comes to the Halls this summer.
History shows that humans are obsessed with their genes. Does the sequencing of the human genome really herald a new opportunity for medicine or is there a darker side that we ignore? Moreover, humans have continuously attempted to favour certain characteristics that have been regarded as 'desirable'. The history of eugenics, from the Supreme Court in the US to the camps in Nazi-occupied Europe, is a prominent stain on the scientific record.
Advances in gene technology mean that we can not only select embryos for 'desirable' characteristics but we can now modify genes of animals with remarkable ease; so possibly very soon we may be able to enhance humans by genetic modification.
Will ethical considerations prevent us from the next step - manufacturing stronger, more gifted and very intelligent children? Or will our imperfect knowledge of how our abilities are inherited mean that there are some major surprises in store?

RUBY WAXFrazzled! A Guide to Mindfulness
FRIDAY 15 APRIL 8pm | Great Hall
A forum for discussion
Ruby Wax is a much loved US-born comedian, actor and writer based in the UK. She has also become a mental health campaigner and gained a Masters degree in Mindfulness based Cognitive Therapy from Oxford University.
This event is a follow up to her sell-out touring show, and best-selling book Sane New World, which helps us understand why we sabotage our sanity with our own thinking.
The forum is an opportunity to engage in discussion with Ruby, to explore further the power of mindfulness practice and how it can be applied in daily life.
This event is our passport to saner living. She might not be sane herself but she does a pretty good imitation.TICKETS: £18 | £16 concessions
JULIET NICOLSONA House Full of Daughters
WEDNESDAY 20 APRIL 8pm | Recital Room
All families have their myths and legends. For many years Juliet Nicolson accepted hers – the dangerous beauty of her flamenco dancing great-great-grandmother Pepita, the flirty manipulation of her great-grandmother Victoria, the infamous eccentricity of her grandmother Vita, her mother’s Tory-conventional background.
But then Juliet, a renowned historian, started to question. As she did so, she sifted fact from fiction, uncovering details and secrets long held just out of sight.
A House Full of Daughters takes us through seven generations of women. In the nineteenth-century slums of Malaga, the salons of fin-de-siècle Washington DC, an English boarding school during the Second World War, Chelsea in the 1960s, the knife-edge that was New York City in the 1980s, these women emerge for Juliet as people in their own right, but also as part of who she is and where she has come from. Dame Joan Ruddock, Chairperson
JANET DAVEYAnother Mother’s Son
WEDNESDAY 4 MAY 8pm | Recital Room
Praised for her taut and subtle prose, Janet Davey returns with an unsettling new novel about family and strangers. Her portrait of lives at crisis point is a masterful study in rendering the everyday beautiful and surprising.
Lorna Parry lives with her three sons, each one lurching uncomfortably into adulthood. In the claustrophobic loneliness of her own home, Lorna orbits around her sons and struggles to talk to them; she’s still angry at her ex-husband, uncomfortable around her father’s new girlfriend, and works quietly as the only employee left in a deserted London archive. Life seems precariously balanced. Then a shocking event occurs in the stationery cupboard at the boys’ school and her world threatens to implode.
A quietly accomplished story of shifting family dynamics with, at its centre, a mother’s dread of the empty nest, Another Mother’s Son succeeds in conveying the banal heroism of everyday life; and Daley beautifully harnesses the power of the mind to weave a narrative, even (and indeed, especially) from fragments.TICKETS: £10 (includes a glass of wine)
MISHA GLENNYNemesis: One Man and The Battle for Rio
WEDNESDAY 8 JUNE 8pm | Recital Room
Nemesis is the story of an ordinary man who became the king of the largest slum in Rio, the head of a drug cartel and perhaps Brazil’s most wanted criminal. A man who tried to bring welfare and justice to a playground of gang culture and
destitution, while everyone around him drew guns and partied.
Spanning rainforests and high-security prisons, filthy slums and glittering shopping malls, this is also the story of how change came to Brazil. Of a country’s journey into the global spotlight, and the battle for the beautiful but damned city of Rio, as it struggles to break free from a tangled web of corruption, violence, drugs and poverty. With Nem at its centre, locked in a fight for his country’s future.TICKETS: £10 (includes a glass of wine)

Blackheath Halls is a Grade II listed building. It opened its doors as a concert hall in 1895. Since then it has presented a diverse programme of concerts and events featuring some of the world’s leading artists, from classical, jazz, rock and folk music through to comedy nights, talks, exhibitions, specific events for children and young people, as well as a varied community engagement programme.
Future plans for Blackheath HallsRoof ProjectAfter many years of ‘patching up’ and repairing, we are delighted to announce that we can at last undertake a complete re-roofing of the Halls’ main building. As the result of a major grant from Viridor Credits, who previously supported the installation of a lift at the Halls, we will be undertaking a complete renovation of the main roof, commencing in July this year and ensuring the Halls are fit for purpose in the 21st century.
Other Capital PlansThis year Blackheath Halls has been recognised by the Arts Council in the form of the largest award given to a venue in the London area. This funding is for a programme of capital works, including significant improvements to the Great Hall, modern stage equipment, improved backstage facilities, and an auditorium that will provide easy access to the arts.
This will significantly enhance the audience experience and comfort, helping to realise our vision of making the Halls a customer focused, flexible, performing arts centre, in which artists can create, explore and perform their work.
Help us to maintain and improve the Halls We have ambitious plans for the Halls and there is a great deal more we are looking to achieve to improve this classic Grade II listed building and its facilities. We are most grateful to the many people who so generously support us in so many ways. Funds raised in recent years have enabled us to install a lift to the first floor, refurbishment of the Recital Room, improvements to the outside of our building, reparation of our car park and the complete

There are tax incentives for leaving a legacy to a registered charity.

MICHAEL PORTILLOLife: A Game of Two HalvesFRIDAY 28 OCTOBER 8pm | Great Hall
It took Michael Portillo little more than 10 years to get a seat in the Commons and then rise in power and esteem to a point where he was a favoured leader of his party and possible future PM. A track record like that suggests to many a privileged friend of the rich and famous. But since leaving the house almost a decade ago Michael has endeared himself to many. A historian at heart, listen to his extraordinary story and then feel free to question him about it.TICKETS: £18 | £16 concessions
