DescriptionA hard fibre, strong, nearly white

colour obtained from leaves of the sisal plant.

Strongest of all the vegetable fibres obtained from a tree of the banana

family in the Philippine Islands, 1-2m long fibre which is light in weight,

lustrous, cream/white - brown.

Soft and silky, bright lustre. Continuous filament and staple,

resistant to abrasion and bacteria. Transparent strong fibre of circual

cross-section.

Reaction to Heat

Burns as fibre touches flame - supports combustion.

Critical temperature 149°C after which fibre burns at flame - supports

combustion.

Will not burn - softens at 235°C leaves a bead and has a celery

smell.

Sensitive to

Mineral acids, paints, detergents, chemicals, salts, fats, oils, solvents,

weathering, sunlight, fungi and moisture.

Description

Soft and silky, bright lustre. Continuous filament and staple,

abrasion resistance second to nylon, excellent resistance to sunlight,

weathering and bacteria.

CareStorage - fibre rope should be stored in a dry unheated room with free air circulation. Keep loose coils off the floor.Dry properly after wetting - sisal and manila fibre ropes should never be stored wet as mildew and other micro-organisms can occur under damp or humid conditions. You should carefully dry the rope out under atmospheric conditions and store in the correct manner. Synthetic or man-made ropes are not generally attacked by mildew.Protect from chemicals - acid, acid fumes and alkalis, are highly injurious to rope. Storage battery solutions, washing compounds or solution and paint, all will cause deterioration of the fibre.UseInspect - you should always inspect your rope PRIOR to use for any nicks, cuts, kinks, chafing or tears.Avoid kinks - when rope is repeatedly twisted in one direction, kinks are certain to develop - unless twist in the opposite direction is thrown in, or out, of the rope. Kinks pulled through restricted space, such as tackle block, will seriously damage the rope.Don’t overload - Use a 6 to 1 safety factor based on the minimum breaking force of a new rope, Overloading may cause permanent elongation.Avoid sharp angles or bends - fibre is somewhat elastic and, as a sling or lashing will ”hug” an object. However, sharp corners and angular bends put a heavy strain on the outer fibres of a rope and should be avoided if possible.Avoid unnecessary wear and abrasion - the outer fibres of a rope, no less than the inner ones, contribute to its strength. When they are worn - by chafing or dragging over a rough, gritty or splintered surface the rope is weakened.Avoid sudden jerks or strains - a rope may be extremely difficult to break with a pull but can be easily be broken with a snap. A sudden jerk on tackle, slings or lashings may result in breaks that would never occur with a steady, natural pull.

Blueline - Polypropylene Rope 3 Strand Extra Strength

High strength rope made from extruded polypropylene yarns. Excellent abrasion and shock absorption. They are tough, extremely strong and have excellent knot ability. They are the same strength wet or dry and are UV stabilised.Suggested applications: Truck ropes, nets, ladder ropes, foot ropes tarpaulin ties, blasting mats, car tow ropes, air sea rescue lines, slings, control ropes, headlines, ducting draw cords.

SAMSON LINE SELECTION

FACTORS TO CONSIDERA number of factors should be considered when selecting a Samson line, such as> intended use or application, > potential abrasion issues, > surface preparation, > rope design/construction, > chafe protection, > proper installation procedures, > inspection schedule, and > retirement criteria. Samson works with you to ensure that there is a comprehensive understanding of each of these considerations to en-sure a long service life and mitigate unnecessary failure.

UNDERSTANDING ABRASION Abrasion is one of the biggest culprits of line destruction. There are two types of abrasion: internal abrasion caused by the relative movement of internal and external yarns; and external abrasion caused by contact with external surfaces, such as roller and panama leads. External abrasion is usually easy to see on any rope, while internal abrasion is easier to inspect in a single-braid rope. When a rope moves over an abrasive surface, both factors contribute to causing the outer surface to move slower, while the internal fibres continue along their original path. Heat results from this type of friction and heat is an enemy of synthetic fibres.

MITIGATING THE EFFECTS OF ABRASIONVessels and equipment that have traditionally used wire rope often have sustained significant damaged caused by fishhooks, broken strands, etc., which come in contact with the deck and other equipment. These conditions can damage or significantly reduce the life expectancy of ropes made with Dyneema®. However, preventative measures can be taken to mitigate these issues by repairing all rope contact points to a smooth and consistent surface.

The addition of chafe protection utilised on the areas of the line most likely to suffer from abrasion is critical for the rope’s longevity. These are either sleeves that slide on the rope or spliced into a line, depending on the construction of the rope and its use.

ROPE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTIONOne of the best ways to combat unforeseen situations and prevent failure is to select the line for the application. The advantages of nonjacketed lines are numerous: they are stronger than jacketed lines size for size and they are easy to inspect and repair. Unlike jacketed lines, which rupture in the areas that suffer the greatest abrasion and have to be replaced, only the chafe protection on a nonjacketed rope has to be replaced, saving time and money.
