Loyalty to country Influenced by Medieval Japan’s strong sense of

nationalism.

People should be loyal to their country and its government because a

strong sense of national pride can help people work together

for the good of society.

Courage Influenced by both Medieval Japan and

Medieval Europe. They both emphasized courage

in battle.

People should be courageous and brave so that they can take

on life’s challenges and also be able to protect

themselves from danger if necessary.

Integrity (Honesty and being true to oneself and

one’s principles)

Influenced by both Medieval Japan and

Medieval Europe. They both showed integrity

through their principles of loyalty, honesty, and

generosity.

People should show integrity by being

honest and doing the right thing. This would

promote a more trustworthy society.

Education and Intelligence

Influenced by Medieval Japan. Samurais were expected to educate

themselves.

People should educate themselves and develop

their skills in order to succeed in life. An

educated population would promote a more sophisticated society.

Philanthropy (showing concern for human welfare,

by donating money, property, or time to needy

persons or causes)

Influenced by both Medieval Japan and Medieval Europe. The Samurai were

compassionate to others, and also supported the

arts. Knights were expected to be generous

to the feeble and help them out.

People should be generous and help out the less fortunate and support good causes

such as the arts.
