Principle 10
Cathodic protectionBS EN 1504-9:2006
BS EN 1504 Principle 10 is concernedwith cathodic protection of theconcrete structure. This is appropriatewhere chloride contamination is
significant or carbonation has reachedthe reinforcement resulting in a highrisk of corrosion. Impressed currentcathodic protection applied in
accordance to EN 12696 can controlcorrosion, counteracts the incipientanode effect and can limit the amountof concrete removal.

CPCP
1 Significant chloride contaminationContaminated concrete due to chlorides, leading to reinforcement corrosion and spalledconcrete.
CPCP
3 Corroded steelSteel sections corroding within encasedconcrete, causing reinforcement corrosionand spalled concrete.
CPCP
2 Extensive carbonationExtensive carbonation of concrete due to lowconcrete cover and carbon dioxide CO² diffusion, leading to reinforcement corrosion.

Solution 10Principle 10: Cathodic protection
Methods of protection based upon theBS EN 1504 Principle 10 is the use ofthe following:
10.1 Applying electrical potential. Note: Protection should be carried outby CP experts involving CP design tooptimise the long-term effectivenessof the system.
