56 Principle 10 Cathodic protection BS EN 1504-9:2006 BS EN 1504 Principle 10 is concerned with cathodic protection of the concrete structure. This is appropriate where chloride contamination is significant or carbonation has reached the reinforcement resulting in a high risk of corrosion. Impressed current cathodic protection applied in accordance to EN 12696 can control corrosion, counteracts the incipient anode effect and can limit the amount of concrete removal. 2.2 CP CP 1 Significant chloride contamination Contaminated concrete due to chlorides, leading to reinforcement corrosion and spalled concrete. CP CP 3 Corroded steel Steel sections corroding within encased concrete, causing reinforcement corrosion and spalled concrete. CP CP 2 Extensive carbonation Extensive carbonation of concrete due to low concrete cover and carbon dioxide CO ² diffusion, leading to reinforcement corrosion.

BS EN 1504 Principle 10 is concernedwith cathodic protection of theconcrete structure. This is appropriatewhere chloride contamination is
