In 2012, I made the resolution to attendat least two shows and go sailing. Iexceeded my goals by attending three

and sailing twice. The year before, I resolvedto take at least 10 pictures per week andaveraged 15 to 20. I guess I have a tendencyto set goals I can surpass.

Resolutions always work best when theyare attainable. For me, this means they oftencome with a number. This year, I’m going tostart with my workspace. As a graduate stu-dent and a writer, I spend most of my timehere, so it’s not a bad place to start.

The good news about a home workspace isthat you don’t need an entire room to haveone. You can set up a workstation in the kitchenor even in the nook of your living room.

Determine the size and type of desk you’llneed. Mine is a small space in the corner of

the room, so I’ve opted for a corner deskwith multiple shelves stacked vertically. Tablesalso substitute as great desks. Just make surethere is enough space above and below forany necessary items like a filing cabinet.

After this, create a filing system. For years,

I’ve depended on a couple of filing boxes fromIkea. This year, I’m resolving to change it up. Theboxes are stuffed to the brim and starting tofall apart. Now, I’m on the hunt for a good, sturdy cabinet and some cute filing folders. Noone said your filing system had to be bland. This is also a good time to sort through yourfiles and decide which to keep, which to shredand which to toss in the recycling bin.

Think about what you’ll be doing at yourworkstation. Will you be there for hours at atime? If so, you’ll need a comfortable chair.Make sure the height is low enough that you

can move your legs comfortably without hit-ting your knees on the desk.

With comfort in mind, add some pleasingelements. Warm lighting is easy on the eyesand can help with fatigue. A decorative lampcan do the trick. Add some personal touch-es, too, such as a framed family photo. Bringin a plant and some pops of your favoritecolors to top it off.

Remember, a good home workstation willhelp keep you organized and also blend intoyour home.

BY SARAH PACHECO

If you haven’t done so already, now is the perfect time tostart setting some resolutions for ways to improve yourlife in 2013.

One of the easiest and most cost-effective upgrades youcan make in the coming year is to your home. And whetheryour goal is to add a little more space to a living area orcompletely redo the kitchen or master bath, every projecthas to start somewhere.

Finding the right person to do the job can be daunting.Do you blindly pick a flashy advertisement? Or do you gowith the company offering an introductory deal that seemstoo good to pass up?

As a leader in home improvements, Windows Hawaii canhelp answer your questions and has offered five top tips tochoosing the right contractor:

1) Make sure the contractor has a license. There aremany people out there willing to pose as legitimate contrac-tors, but they may not be qualified or legally licensed tomake this claim. You can verify a license online atpvl.ehawaii.gov/pvlsearch/app or by calling 586-2700.

2) Check if the contractor has insurance. All qualitycontractors carry workers compensation, as required bylaw, as well as general liability insurance. They should be ableto show you current certificates of insurance to prove theyhave coverage. The minimum should be $1 million.

3) Is the contractor a member of the BetterBusiness Bureau (BBB)? The BBB is a public servicethat provides consumers with a place to rate a contractor, solve disputes and file complaints if necessary. An A+ ratingis the highest grade given.

4) Ask the contractor for a bid. Many contractors willoffer a free estimate of how much they project the projectwill cost. Go to several different contractors, then comparebids. If the price is too low, that is usually a red flag that thecontractor is creating cheap jobs or cutting corners. Thegeneral rule is to toss out the low, toss out the high, and gowith the guy in the middle.

5) How long has the contractor been in business? The answer should be straight-forward: “We’ve been inbusiness for more than 10 years.” But beware of theguys who say, “We’ve been in business for more than25 years, but this is a new venture.” If in doubt, ask forreferences. A well-established contractor will be morethan happy to direct you to former clients or show you

a profile of past jobs.

Other things to keep in mind are if the contractor hasa place of business, such as a showroom or warehouse, and if the contractor has a staff of workers versus some-one who relies strictly on subcontractors, which are gen-erally cheaper, less-experienced sources of labor.

As a business built on referrals from satisfied cus-tomers, Windows Hawaii learned long ago that providingquality materials and friendly services result in longevityin the home-improvement industry.

You can learn more by calling Windows Hawaii at 671-0808 or by going online to www.windowshawaii.com.

Sharing expertise in wood flooringWood flooring has been used for

hundreds of years all over theworld and has evolved greatly

to become the beautiful and elegant floorcovering that it is today. Why, even thelast ten years have been revolutionary, with exotic woods pushing traditionaldomestic species out of the way andmanufacturers developing more durableand stable versions of this traditionalbeauty. It is safe to say that hardwoodflooring is currently at the peak of itspopularity and there are no signs of itslowing down.

Shirley Pai Hilton is president and CEOof Hawaii’s largest wood flooring whole-saler, Kahala Pacific Floors (formerly PacificImports International). The company man-ufactures the very popular Kahala Floorsand Bayside Flooring brands found locally. She is one of the foremost experts onwood flooring in Hawaii, and she is veryhappy to share in-depth information onthe various types of wood flooring, deco-rating with wood flooring and the properinstallation of the products. Her expertiseis often tapped for local home improve-ment publications and she has providedconsultation on many large flooring proj-ects. In fact, one of her customers recentlyreferred to her as the “Maven ofMahogany,” a description she especiallyappreciates because of her desire to shareher knowledge with others.

Hilton said wood flooring is a very popu-lar choice for several good reasons, the firstone having everything to do with aesthetics.

“Wood flooring just looks fantastic,”said Hilton. “It can add warmth, drama, character, richness — you name it. It’s likebeing all made up and using the rightcolor of lipstick as the finishing pop!” Andwith all of the colors and grains available, there is a look to match any décor.

Wood floors have also gained a largefollowing among homeowners wantingto dump old dusty carpets — with theirdust mites and other allergens — andswitch to a surface that can be wipedclean. Additionally, carpet usually needsto be changed out after about 10 years, but the right wood floor will last a life-time.

That brings our attention to the thirdmajor reason customers choose wood:it’s a one-time investment in a lifetimeproduct that adds permanent value toreal estate while being utilized on a day-to-day basis.

As Hilton said, these days engineeredwood floors are “where it’s at,” and thecompany’s sales run five to one in favor ofKahala Floors’ engineered woods (versussolids). Offering a refinishable layer of the“real wood” which has been installedonto a plywood base, engineered floorsare not meant to be stingy on wood.Rather, their unique construction offerslongevity that nearly equals that of a 3/4

inch solid wood floor, with the mainadvantages being dimensional stabilityand lower installation costs.

Hilton said her desire to share reliableinformation on wood flooring hasinspired her to organize a monthly work-shop at the showroom titled “Wood andStone Flooring 101” where a wealth ofinformation is presented in a pleasant andorganized manner. Past par ticipantsalways say how much they appreciatedthe terrific product information andstraight talk about their options.

The next session will be held Saturday,,Jan. 12 at 10 a.m. Call 847-7711 toreserve your seat today.

Adding a bathroom to your homeremains one of the most popularand rewarding home improve-

ments you can make. In fact, when yousell your home, you can expect to recoupmore than 50 percent of the cost of abathroom addition. Creating a new bath-room where none currently exists can, however, be among the more challenginghome improvements you can make.

Fortunately, with careful planning andthe help of innovative plumbing fixtures,it is possible to add a bathroom to vir tu-ally any home. Here are some challengesand how you can address them:

Finding spaceWhere to put another bathroom is a

burning question. Of course, the ques-tion is more challenging for smaller or

older homes, but options do exist.Options might include taking some spaceaway from a garage, or adding a bath-room beneath stairs.

Breaking through concreteAdding a bathroom in a home that sits

on a slab traditionally requires cuttinginto concrete. There are many pitfalls toconsider with this traditional approach.

Cutting into a concrete pad is a costlyendeavor and inevitably weakens itsstructural integrity. The process createsdust and noise, and the contractor can’tbe sure what he will encounter. Thesechallenges can be solved with above-floor plumbing.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Every time Iread your column I always wonder what yourhome looks like and imagine it must be inperfect order. I’m curious about your life andhow it was before you knew feng shui. Howmuch can you attribute your success in yourlife to the feng shui of your home? I find greatinterest in your column, but I can never seemto get motivated to clear stuff out.

The new year signifies new beginningsand opportunities for positivechange, so I’ll take this opportunity in

the first “Go Ask Alice” column of 2013 toshare my “before feng shui” story with you.

Multiple storage units filled with “stuff”

This may come as a shock, but about 10years ago, I had three storage units filledwith the things I thought I needed to keep— everything from clothes to furniture togadgets and kitchen tools. I loved to buythings and I kept almost everything. I waspaying $471 per month in storage unit rentbecause I lived in a condo and the closetsand shelves were filled to the gills. I neverunderstood why people would “de-clutter”and get rid of things. I thought living by the“I’ll keep it just in case” rule was best.

It’s in my natureFor those of you who know a bit about

astrology, I am a Cancer — a “double”Cancer at that. This just means that at thetime of my birth I had multiple emphasispoints in the constellation of Cancer.Double Cancers are like crabs in that theyoften resist change in the environment andhave a hard time letting go of stuff, verysimilar to the Rat personality in theChinese horoscope. Both crabs and ratsare driven by security.

The study of feng shuiWhen my career in media unexpectedly

ended, I immediately got interested in

understanding the bigger picture of life andstarted on the path of becoming a profes-sional astrologer. I immersed myself inlearning about life cycles and life potentialthrough astrology, which turned out to bea natural segue to studying feng shui. So, Itook some intensive training courses infeng shui, thinking that it would be a goodcomplement to astrology because theywere both about “energy.” When I finishedmy feng shui course, I was excited to haveinformation on how to help people set uptheir homes to reach their highest poten-tial. I immediately started offering feng shuiconsultations.

My awakeningThen about a year or two later, as I was

walking to my car with my significant other,I opened the trunk and revealed a clutteredmess. He jokingly said, “Feng shui consultantsays, do as I say not as I do, huh?” I got a bitdefensive and made excuses as to why Ineeded all those things, knowing deep

down that I was, in fact, living incongruently. I decided right then that even though I

had the knowledge, I couldn’t ask others todo what I didn’t do myself. I was being inau-thentic and knew I had to make a drasticchange in my lifestyle.

Minimizing my clutterI immediately set aside seven days to de-

clutter my life. I made a difficult decision toclear, donate, give away or throw away any-thing that I didn’t need. Like a mad woman,I went from one end of the apartment tothe other mercilessly purging and clearing. Ieven cleared out my storage units and wasable to reduce them to only one small unitat $39 per month for “must keeps,” such asold photos, large suitcases and mandatoryfiles. When I was done, I could breathe andfelt liberated, as if I could do anything.

So what eventually happened? That was one of the best things I ever

did for our home and myself. Over the

course of the next eight months, I droppedmore than 10 pounds without even trying.I know it was directly related to letting goof all the physical burdens in the form ofmy stuff. Not only did I start feeling betterand more energetic over time, but my busi-ness also started growing by leaps andbounds. Opportunities came out of“nowhere.” My emotional state improvedand I felt less stressed by my challenges.Clearing out my clutter literally changed myexperience of life.

Remember, I am a double Cancer, so it isstill a struggle for me to let things go, and Istill have a tendency to accumulate, butevery year, without fail, no matter how busyI am, I set aside two full days to clear myhome. I now trust the process of life morethan ever and find security in the knowingthat life will bring me everything I needwithout my having to hoard things.

Calendar your clean upI highly suggest that you avoid using the

excuse of insufficient time by setting aside“de-clutter” days on your calendar andmaking the task the only thing you and yourfamily do on those days.

I cannot emphasize enough how impor-tant it is to rid yourself of the stuff you donot need. Your clutter literally weighs youdown. The more your home is de-clutteredand unencumbered, the more easily andfreely the energy flows, enabling those whoreside in the home to flourish in ways theymight not otherwise. If you make the timeto do some clearing, you can create anamazing 2013 with your home as yourbiggest supporter!

Seven lucky decor trends to adoptDespite its negative reputation, the

number 13 doesn’t always have tobe unlucky. Take these top seven

decor trends for 2013 from design experts, manufacturers and trend forecasters acrossthe country. They’re fresh, fun and sure tobring good fortune to any home.

1. A splash of colorIndustry leader Pantone’s annual fashion

color report sets the tone for home decoras well as clothing, and the spring 2013report is no exception. Its softer-huedpalette of Dusk Blue, Lemon Zest, AfricanViolet, Grayed Jade, Linen and TenderShoots is emboldened by Monaco Blue,Poppy Red, Emerald and Nectarine. MarcThee, founder of the No. 1 residential inte-rior design firm in the country, also sees amove toward pure color palettes such ascream and sea glass, khaki and white, orneutral with a pop of yellow.

2. Not your mama's wallpaperRepositionable wallpaper is a decorating

mainstay, said Todd Imholte, president ofMurals Your Way, whose website,www.muralsyourway.com, is the top onlinedestination for wall murals worldwide. The

company's collections of peel-and-stickwallpaper are available in such themes asVintage, Dots, Flower Prints and MostlyModern, and can be removed and reusedhundreds of times without losing theiradhering qualities. Because the companyoffers color matching, customers canmatch their repositionable wallpaper to anexisting paint color, updated decor or thenew Pantone color palette.

3. Cooking up smart ideasNext year’s contemporary kitchen will

include European frameless laminate cabi-netry, multi-tasking appliances, hands-freefaucets and increased smartphone andtablet functionality, according to JamieGold, a certified independent kitchen andbath designer. Value-oriented remodels willremain popular, she predicted, with home-owners incorporating existing flooring, fix-

tures, cabinets and/or appliances into theirdesign plans to save money and retainfavorite design elements.

4. Let it shineJeff Dross, senior product manager of

Kichler Lighting, said energy-efficient LEDproducts will continue to dominate lighting, and will be prevalent in coves, tray ceilings, toekicks and under and above cabinets.Chrome and polished nickel will appeal tothe emerging “Y” generation and babyboomers modernizing their retirementhomes. Tall, slender outdoor lanterns in con-temporary, cottage and transitional styles willwork well for those in smaller urban spaces.

5. Heavy metalSusan Goldstick of Susan Goldstick Inc. pre-

dicts home furnishings will also shine in 2013.New metals such as rose gold and gun metalwill be mixed, and pierced, hammered and oxi-dized textural metals will be especially popular.Vendors will add metal to their wood pieces, and faux animal print metalics will provide tex-ture and reflective light in the textiles arena.

6. There's no place like homeHomeowners find comfort in “cocoon-

Happy New Year! I know you’ve justbarely gotten over Christmas andare probably still recuperating

from those charge card bills, but nothingsays it’s a new year like a new space! Haha!Well, that’s the designer in me talking, any-way.

So if you’ve cleared out the Christmastree and trimmings and are ready for afresh start in your space, I’ve got some easytips for you.

A few months ago I completely remod-eled a unit in Discovery Bay. The unit is avacation rental that belongs to Paul Knight,a client from Canada. As you can see fromthe before photos, the décor was com-pletely outdated. Paul wanted an overhauland gave me free rein to create a spacethat was unique and different, but still hadan island feel.

Whether you’re thinking of a remodel orsimply a fluff-up, an easy rule to rememberis to design in threes. It’s especially useful, since many people tend to decorate withtoo much of one thing, like wood every-where, or beige everywhere.

Let’s start with color. I like to have a pri-mary, secondary and accent color. KnowingI wanted a rich, dark floor, I went with afresh primary color and kept the walls alight cream and the kitchen cabinets white.

Other touches carry the white throughoutthe space, like the ceramic lamps, ceramicelephant and vase.

My secondary color was rich brown:dark floors setting off the light walls, twoshades of brown in the area rug, brownaccent pillows and dining chairs.

Finally, the accents. I love orange becauseit pops with creative energy. Orange is thecolor on the accent wall and in the arm-chair, throw pillows and even the one popin the banana-leaf art.

Next is threes in texture. The dominanttexture is natural wood. Can you spot thewood elements in the space? How aboutelements of my second texture, metals?Don’t overlook the rail lighting — and theappliances in the kitchen pick up the sheen.

My third textural element is glass. Theside tables, dining table, light cups in the raillighting and glass accents on the counter-tops all carry this theme. And I wish youcould see how the glass tiles in the kitchenbacksplash take up the whites and brownsand make them sparkle, but unfortunatelythe under-counter lighting wasn’t workingthe day of the photo shoot.

Finally, threes work for spatial divisions,

too. A balanced, visually pleasing spaceneeds high, medium and low elements. Tryto have objects line up at different levels.Notice that the tops of the banana leavesline up with the top of the mirror? Otherelements are the same height as the chairsand so on. Break it up so not everything ison one level, and then bring in a sense oforder by creating horizontal lines for theeye to follow.

See? Whether you’re planning a remodelor just a fluff-up of your space in 2013, itcan be as easy as 1-2-3!

Tax credits explained

HAWAII HOME EXPOcontact // 695-EXPO(3976)address // 2933 Koapaka St.

Undoubtedly, nearly everyonehas heard that the tax creditsfor photovoltaic systems have

changed as of the new year. Althoughthis is an unfortunate situation, HawaiiHome Expo (HHE) has taken thestance that there is still no betterinvestment than installing PV for yourhome. While clients have come toexpect the average payback time tobe between three to four years (after

tax credits), it is important to notethat because of the low costs thatHHE maintains for all clients, the pay-back time will only increase by abouta year in most cases.

For those who may have beencaught unawares, here is a quick breakdown of how the new tax creditswork. One system is now consideredmaxed out at a panel rating of 5 kw(or 5,000 DC Watts). In rough num-

bers, this would come out to twentypanels rated at 250 Watts.

For simple math (because HHEprices tend to be lower), let’s just saythat this system has a total cost of$25,000 (or $5 per DC Watt). In thepast, this would qualify for $8,750 inState tax credits. Under the currentstructure it will only be $5,000 in cred-its. While that is definitely less thanbefore, based on the output of those20 panels, that difference would berecouped through roughly 21 monthsof electrical savings, even in a less favor-able sun zone like Kaneohe.

Photovoltaic systems are still thebest return on investment. And whilemany people may think that there’sno reason to rush and install a systemsince the tax credits just changed, keep in mind that this first change hitwithout much warning as well so it’s ineveryone’s best interest to keepinstalling and keep saving money.

Of course, the above example is asimplification as many people won’tneed exactly twenty 250 W panels.Every home is different and HawaiiHome Expo can calculate exactlywhat’s needed. Let them walk youthrough the new laws and explainhow a photovoltaic system is still sim-ply the best investment around.

Looking out for yourroof by looking up

BY KYLE GALDEIRA

A s the new year approaches, home-owners are reminded to be proac-tive when it comes to an often

overlooked feature of their structure —the roof.

“Roofing is something you never thinkabout until it becomes a problem,” saidClinton Murakami, owner of Murakami’sRoofing. “It’s a good New Year’s resolutionto take care of your roof.”

Murakami’s Roofing has been assistingHawaii’s homeowners for more than 35years as Clinton now heads the family busi-ness after learning the ropes under thetutelage of his father, Clifford. The secondgeneration roofer recommends thathomeowners take action to inspect andidentify potential problems with theirrooftops before they become troublesomeand expensive to remedy.

Murakami suggests looking at your ceil-ing to identify any spotting or discoloration, which could be a result of leaks within theroofing system. While walking around youryard, Murakami recommends looking for

small pieces of shingles that may have dete-riorated and fallen from the roof. Also, keep an eye out for any warping, bucklingor other blemishes that may stem frompests and termites eating away at thestructure, or even water damage.

After noticing any problems that requireattention, the staff at Murakami’s Roofing isready and able to assist with a free consul-tation, during which customers can choosefrom a variety of options best suited tomeet their budget and needs. Murakami’soffers a host of roofing applications, includ-ing asphalt shingles that provide cost-effec-tive, durable coverage and metal roofingdesigned to withstand various conditionspresent in the Islands. The company alsofeatures roll roofing for low-slope roofswith the goal of preventing moisture accu-mulation and can apply roof cooling mate-

rials, such as reflective elastomeric roofcoatings, which reduce surface tempera-tures and help to keep the inside of ahome cool.

“We try hard to give good customerservice, and it’s our service that sets usapart from our competitors,” saidMurakami, who hopes to pass on the busi-ness to his son in the coming years andmake it a third-generation company. “Weall sell the same roofing products, but it allcomes down to customer service. I have alot of customers that used to be my dad’s,and God-willing, they will be my son’s cus-

tomers, too.”Just in time to address those New Year’s

roofing resolutions, when customers pur-chase a complete re-roofing packagethrough Murakami’s Roofing, the home-owner will receive one of two availablebonus accessories. Customers may choosebetween a complimentary 50 feet ofseamless aluminum rain gutters or a free20-watt natural light solar attic fan, whichhelps to circulate the air within and coolthe home.

“When you pick up the phone and needhelp, we’re there for you,” said Murakami.

Add to your home with a lanaiIf you’re like many homeowners, you

consider the lanai or patio an exten-sion of your home. As you contem-

plate ways to improve your outdoor area, think about projects that can both extendthe hours you spend outside and make thetime you spend there more relaxing.

Just as technology continues to make lifeindoors easier, more sophisticated awningsystems and lighting can make your out-door space that much more pleasant. Hereare a few areas to consider as you plotyour next round of improvements for youroutdoor living space:

Shade mattersAwnings and umbrellas play a huge role

in regulating the temperature and com-fort of your deck or lanai. Somfy’s motor-ized awning systems and wind sensorswork together to automatically retractyour awnings when winds become toohigh. Retractable awning systems pow-ered by Somfy can also be accessorizedwith sun sensors that signal motorizedawnings to open as soon as the sun rises, keeping your outdoor space cool fromthe start of the day. With a system likethis, you can leave the days of fiddling

with fussy patio umbrellas behind.

An outdoor kitchenNo patio is complete without a grill.

Make outdoor cooking easier by adding aprep island that can be placed near yourgrill. And if you really want to go all out, look for options that feature outdoor sinks

or small refrigerators hidden under thecountertop.

Entertainment connectivityWell-placed speakers can bring the

stereo sound of your indoor system out. Byupgrading your system so it can be con-trolled from your wireless device, you canbring the conveniences of your digitalmusic system outdoors and eliminate theneed to get up to turn up the volume orflip to the next song.

Take a look at your lightingHigh-powered outdoor lights on sensors

might be helpful when you’re bringing inthe groceries at night, but patio entertain-ing calls for a little more subtlety when itcomes to lighting. Consider zero-energysolar-powered fixtures around the perime-ter of your patio for a gentle ambiance tolight up your evenings. Somfy’s motorizedsystems can also be connected to yourlighting, allowing you to adjust brightness asneeded from the comfort of your patiolounger.

patio pleasant for more of the day — and more ofthe year — is to add simple temperature controlfeatures. If you live in a place where it gets uncom-fortably hot during the summer, install mistersaround your favorite sitting areas to cool thingsdown. Likewise, if you live in a colder region, such asa mountain range, and find yourself heading insidebecause it gets too chilly, a few strategically placedoverhead heaters can extend your patio season.

Now is the perfect time to plan for next year’spatio season, and with the right improvements, youcan make it the most comfortable one yet. For moreideas and products that can make your outdoorspace that much more hospitable, visit www.somfysystems.com.

Entertaining at home with friendsand family is very exciting butsometimes stressful. To prepare

for your guests’ arrival, you may betempted to just clean the kitchen coun-ters, toss a few extra towels in the guestbathroom and ignore the rest of thehouse. Instead, your visitors will enjoy theparty more if they have full access to anopen, organized and welcoming home.

Knowing where to start is the mostimpor tant thing. Lifestyle guru SusieCoelho has provided entertaining tips forthe home on HGTV, “Oprah,” “Today”and “The View” and knows just what todo.

Add simple decor to make a spaceinviting

When decorating the seating and buf-fet areas, Coelho suggested going simplewith tea lights in glass votive jars andchoosing a one- or two-tone colorpalette for dishes, napkins and flowers.

“For beautiful ambiance and magicallighting, arrange candles down the centerof the table,” she said. “If you want to add

some greenery among them for the holi-days, you can, but keep it simple.”

In addition to the candles as center-pieces, Coelho also recommended mak-ing the food part of the display as well.

“Contrast is a buffet's best friend andyou can find it in different heights, sizes, colors of the food, dishes and accessories.I have used everything from fabrics, herbsand pottery to flowers, candles and vasesturned over a dish to get height and usedan odd container for display,” she said.

The more room, the merrierAs people start making themselves

comfortable, they won’t just stay in thekitchen. Having all areas of the houseclean and open will invite guests to gatherand socialize, keeping the party goinglonger.

One room your guests will be sure tovisit is the bathroom. Consider placing adecorative candle in the room to add afestive glow for ambiance.

Most importantly, be prepared forclogged drains in the bathroom andkitchen sinks, which could disrupt the

flow of the party. “A clogged sink drainalways comes at the wrong time,” saidCoelho. “To avoid these inconvenient sit-uations, I recommend keeping two prod-ucts handy at all times: Liquid-PlumrDouble Impact Snake + Gel System andLiquid-Plumr Urgent Clear. These prod-ucts work great for both the bathroom

and kitchen sinks to keep them runningsmoothly.”

Now that you had prepared your homefor guests ahead of time, you can enjoy thefun and party the night away.

Water heater options for homesIf all is working well, most homeowners

put little thought into their waterheater. But when this critical appliance

fails, it can be a nightmare that halts ahome’s productivity completely.

Don’t wait until an emergency occurs totake action; make updates before the lifeexpectancy of the current heater ends.Newer units have better efficiency andlower operating costs if you choose theright one for your home. After all, heatingwater is the second largest energy drain ina home. Here are the three main types ofwater heaters.

Traditional tank modelsMost homeowners have a traditional

tank water heater where heated water isheld in a tank throughout the day, providinghot water to the home when there’s ademand. If you already have the space, youmay select a modern tank heater toreplace the old one. The good news istoday’s tank heaters are more efficient thanever, providing more hot water while usingless energy.

For example, the Rheem XR90 gaswater heater can be retrofitted into anexisting tank area, but takes up less space

because it’s a 29-gallon tank. It provides 90gallons of hot water in the first hour fol-lowing the heater’s initial firing; so, home-owners get three times the amount of hotwater in an hour than what the tank actu-ally holds.

Tankless optionsTankless water heaters have been used

for more than 50 years in other countriesand are becoming more popular in theUnited States. A tankless heater uses ener-gy to heat water only as it is needed, soenergy is used efficiently and utility costs

may decrease. Plus, tankless water heaterscan provide a steady stream of hot waterthat doesn’t run out.

These types of water heaters are aboutthe size of a medicine cabinet and are hungon an interior or exterior wall, perfect forhomeowners with limited space. Most tan-kless water heaters are gas fueled, such asthe popular Rheem Prestige SeriesCondensing Tankless Water Heater. Thismodel is easy to install..

Hybrid tank unitsHybrid water heaters are more than

twice as efficient as standard electric units.Consumers who switch to a hybrid electricwater heater with heat pump technologywill save $286 annually on their electricutility bills, compared to those who have astandard 50-gallon electric model (with a0.90 energy factor), according to U.S.Department of Energy estimates.

These tanks are set up with a heat pumpas well as electric technology. Dependingon the demand put on the system, thehomeowner can select the most energyefficient means to heat water.

Six key steps for a healthy homeIn addition to taking care of your family

and yourself, it’s important to takeextra care of your home. As the new

year gets underway, you should take thetime to pause, relax and recharge at home,if only for a few minutes, each day.

Luckily, there are a number of simple, yetimpactful ways to keep the entire house-hold in good health. Here are seven exam-ples.

1. Pencil in cleaningRoutine household cleaning keeps clut-

ter and germs at bay. Corral loose itemsinto decorative bins and baskets, then cleancommon high-touch areas such as faucets, door knobs and light switches to reducethe spread of viruses and bacteria. Be sureto dust regularly. If you have any sensitivityto cleaning products, try a solution of equalparts water and distilled white vinegar toclean everything from windows to appli-ances.

2. The power of a showerInstalling a new showerhead can go a

long way in improving your frame-of-mind.The Twist handheld shower from Moen hasfour unique settings, from “Immerse” and“Drench” to “Soothe,” and is available with

an adjustable slide bar, allowing everyone inthe house to create the perfect customshowering experience. Another feature ofTwist is the “Shine” setting, for cleaning thetub and shower tiles, keeping mold andgerms to a minimum.

3. For the dogsPets are extensions of our families and

should be treated as such, even when itcomes to bathing. These four-legged friends

have the tendency to bring many allergensinto the home. To minimize this problem, dogs should be bathed regularly and wipeddown with a damp cloth when they come infrom outside.

4. Sweeping surpriseFor years, we have counted on our vac-

uums to get rid of dust and allergens in ourhomes. But, it turns out that the machines

we rely on to clean our floors and furnituremay actually be making them dirtier. Arecent study found that many vacuumsactually suspend harmful allergen particlesin the air, increasing our exposure to them.A vacuum with HEPA (High-Efficiency-Particulate-Air) filter will release less dirtand bacteria.

5. Door etiquetteAdding a door mat on both sides of a

door and having everyone promptlyremove their shoes upon entering can sig-nificantly cut back on what is being trackedinside. The Carpet and Rug Institute esti-mates that up to 80 percent of dirt andallergens can be caught with a washabledoor mat — keeping your family healthyand your floors clean.

6. Air it outOne area many homeowners might not

consider when it comes to a healthierhome is the mattress. After washing sheets, delay putting on clean linens to allow timefor mite-friendly moisture to evaporate. Now you’ll have a clean mattress to goalong with your clean sheets.

More homeowners are turning tovalue-driven renovation projectsthat will spruce up their space

and withstand the test of time.Replacing outdoor siding is the home

improvement site’s No. 1 pick for projectsthat add value to your home, according toHGTV.com. Refreshing your outdoor sidingnot only adds curb appeal but overall homevalue.

For Chicago-based architect DirkDanker, principal at Nagle HartrayArchitecture, one of the most popular sid-ing applications on a single-family home iswood. Its timeless versatility as a total sidingstrategy or use as an accent that sharpensup the front of a home makes it a smart, durable choice in any climate.

“We like it for its natural color, longevityand workability,” said Danker. “It provides amaintenance-free structure.”

In addition to using materials that areeasy to install, homeowners tend tochoose traditionally popular materials to

maintain a home’s appeal through years ofevolving trends. The stylish texture and rus-tic-colored warmth of Western Red Cedarsiding gives any home a natural beautywhile enhancing front yard curb appeal.

Replacing the siding on a home can bedone strategically to maximize value and

accommodate all budgets. Creating anaccent wall or using wood as a comple-ment that warms up other materials canmake a project affordable while still boost-

ing the bottom line.Wood siding comes in many different

patterns and grades, such as bevel, boardand batten, channel, and tongue andgroove, to match a home’s style and budg-et. Stains and other finishes will help pre-serve the wood and keep it looking nicefor years to come. Danker recommendspre-finishing siding onsite before it isinstalled.

“We have finished cedar siding with bothtransparent coatings and semi-transparentstains,” Danker said. “Transparent coatslook great because it highlights the naturallook of the cedar siding.”

STORY BYJaimieKim

PHOTOS COURTESY OFSunetric

It’s no secret that Hawaii’s solar industry hasbeen booming for the past few years, buthomeowners and industry professionals have

recently expressed concern over the suddenchanges in state tax rules that will drastically reducethe amount of tax credits available for Hawaii home-owners. If you have been considering reducing yourelectric bill with solar, but are worried you’ve missedthe state tax credit opportunities because ofchanges being implemented in 2013, don’t panic:Sunetric has a solution.

“The department of taxation issued a newadministrative ruling to change the definitions of thestate tax incentives,” shared Sunetric’s chief operat-ing officer, Aaron Kirk.

The new qualifications to receive state tax creditsare now based on kilowatts installed. This means youmay not be entitled to receive as much in returnfrom the state as you may have in 2012.

“This can result in up to a 50 percent cut in taxcredits from the state level, just by altering the defi-nition,” said Kirk. “Sunetric feels that the tax changedecision was made too quickly and without lookingat the impact it’s going to have on the solar industry,on Hawaii’s clean energy initiative or to Hawaiihomeowners.

“This tax code change will dramatically affect theease in which local homeowners can put solar ontheir homes,” he added.

Kirk predicted that there may not be any open-ings for installations before the end of the year, unless you want to turn to drastic measures and gowith someone who can’t guarantee the same qualityof service.

But don’t be discouraged and lose faith in turningyour roof into a personal power plant.

To continue to provide its reputable service tocustomers, and to assist homeowners who won’t beable to install photovoltaic before the end of theyear, Sunetric has found exclusive means to coverthe loss of tax rebates for homeowners.

“We have access to an exclusive program thatallows us to honor nearly all of the same tax creditsthat were available in 2012 for our new customers,”said Kirk. “We’ve worked hard to find a way to givehomeowners a little bit more time to get in, andbenefit from the better tax rebates that were avail-able before this drastic cut was made.”

However, Kirk noted that Sunetric will only beable to extend the 2012 tax credits for a limitedtime.

“The resources of this program are limited andare allocated only to Sunetric customers. We aredoing everything we can to extend it as long as pos-sible and give as many local homeowners the bene-fits that these tax incentives provided before therules changed,” said Kirk.

Choosing to trust in Sunetric also means knowing

that you’ll get more than your money’s worth withtop-tier, U.S.-made photovoltaic panels.

To ensure that you’ll be able to take part inSunetric’s exclusive offer, visit sunetric.com or callthe company’s main offices at 262-6600.
