Interactive and Integrative Lesson PlanThe Human Heart

    (Date)

    I. Objectives

Cognitive : Describe the structure and function of the circulatory system. Name and describe the different parts and functions of the human heart.

Psychomotor : Label the parts of the diagram of the internal and external structures of the human heart.Affective : Render an opinion as to why the heart stands for such abstract concepts as love,

    courage, tenderness and compassion.

    I I. Integration

    A. Values: ealth care and uman virtue.!. English: "ocabulary building and expressing an accurate description of an observation.

    III. Subject Matter

    1. nit : #irculatory $ystem

    To!ic : %he uman eartSub"to!ic : &xternal and internal structures of the human heart.

#e$erence : $cience and ealth ', (essie A. "illegas, pages )*+Materials : force pump, diagram of the structure of the heart or heart model

    2. %once!tselated Ideas

. %he circulatory system is probably the most effective delivery agent in nature. -t delivers oxygen, nutrients, enymes, and other materials that are needed by the body metabolism. -t brings antibodies andother materials that fight infection or germ invasion to specific organ targets. -t retrieves carbon dioxide, water, and other waste materials from these cells and transports these wastes to the organs that get ridof them.

). %he heart is the pumping organ of the circulatory system. -t is a powerful muscle called cardiac muscle, which is the strongest muscle in the human body.

+ $tructure of the eart.+. /yocardium is the outer wall of the heart.+.) $eptum is the inner wall that divides the heart into a left and a right side. &ach side consists of

an auricle, or atrium, and a ventricle.

+.+ &ndocardium is the tough membrane lining of the four chambers.+.0 1ericardium is a membranous sac enclosing the heart.+.2 "alves are flap*li3e muscles that prevent the bac3flow of blood.+.' "ena cava carries deoxygenated blood from the different parts of the body to the heart through

the right auricle.+.4 1ulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart through left auricle.+.5 1ulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle of the heart to be purified

in the lungs.+.6 Aorta is the largest artery that carries the blood from the left ventricle of the heart to all the

    regions of the body.

    1. Motivation

    1. Demonstration of a force pump to show how ground water is circulated in a community; and make the pupils

draw an analogy between the water in the community and the blood in the human body.2. Ask the pupils to infer how the blood is circulated in the human body.

    3. Show a video clip of the threedimensional image of the human heart.

    2. Presentation

!he water that we drink is the same water that our forefathers had been drinking for years and centuries. "t is #ust being

cycled and circulated again and again. $ou have seen how the water is pumped from the ground. !hat same waterreturns to the ground after we used it% filtered by the soil% and then pumped up again. &ell% the same thing happens

with our blood. "n our lesson for today% we shall find out how the blood is circulated and why it should be circulated in

    the human body.

    3. %once!t *ormation

    1. !he human body is like a community% not of people% but of cells. A group of cells make up a tissue. A

muscle is an e'ample of a tissue. A group of tissues make up an organ. (ur stomach% lungs% and kidneys are

e'amples of organ. A group of organs make up a system. !he circulatory system is an e'ample.

    2. &hat is the main function of the human circulatory system)3. &hy is blood circulated in the body) &hat does the body need that is delivered by the blood)

*. &hat are the organs of the circulatory system)

+. &hich organ is responsible for pumping the blood throughout the body)

,. &hat are the different parts of the heart and their respective functions)

    4. Enhancement (ctivit):

&hat are the parts of the human heart) -page 3

    5. +enerali,ation

/ame and identify the internal and e'ternal parts of the human heart; and give the function of each part.

    6. (!!lication&Integration

The heart is probably the most depended upon organ of the human body. Even the brain depends on the heart for its

supply of oxygen. t is no surprise that the !ord heart stands for such abstract concepts as love" courage" tenderness"

compassion" etc. And yet !e ta#e our hearts for granted. $hat desirable habits can you practice in order to care and

    protect your heart%

    7. Evaluation

    Multi!le %hoice. #hoose the correct answer.

    1. The main function of the circulatory system is to pump blood. $hy should blood be delivered to all body parts%A. The blood is the only delivery agent of the human body.

&. Cells" tissues and organs need blood in order to function.

    C. The blood is the main organ that delivers the things that the body needs such as oxygen" nutrients"

    en'ymes" and antibodies.

    D. The various organs of the body produce !astes that needed to be removed and delivered to otherbody parts that get rid of them.

    a A% 0 and c 0% % and D

    b A% 0% and D d A only

    2. $hich of the follo!ing best describes a heart%a cell c organ

    b tissue d system

+. The heart is a muscle #no!n as cardiac muscle. $hich muscles prevent the bac#flo! of blood%a valves c left and right auricles

b left and right ventricles d myocardium and pericardium

    0. $hich muscle divides the heart into left and right atria%a myocardium c septum

    b endocardium d pericardium

+. $hat #ind of blood is carried by the vena cava to the heart through the right auricle%

    a o'ygenated blood c deo'ygenated bloodb whole blood d pure blood

,. Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood from the heart to the different body parts.

$hat artery carries deoxygenated blood and !hy%

    %. (ssignment

Answer the following 9uestions on a half sheet of pad paper.

    1. 'plain in your own words why the pulmonary vein is the only vein that carries o'ygenated blood.

    2. &hy does the heart beat)
