THE NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE OF PGDGCMIndia has been undergoing massive transitions in demographic, economic, social, cultural and familial status. Although family still plays an important role in providing care, the number of older people living in private institutions has increased dramatically in the last decade. Lack of women in family care giving role, scarcity of trained care givers, chronic diseases and disabilities leading to dependency, children being distant due to migration for employment, widening gap between the young and the old, as well as shrinkage of family ties etc. are found to be the main reasons for the necessity of senior care homes in India. Balancing traditional values with the changing perspectives of modern contemporary India is a challenge for many Indian families. Additionally, the demographic transition in modern India has resulted in an imbalance between care deliverers and care receivers. With the lack of care givers and informal care support, many elders recognize senior care centers as their ultimate destination for care and living arrangement (Varughese & Jamuna, 2014).

The state of Kerala is graying

faster than any other state in the country. With a good track record of social development indicators, especially in health and education sectors, Kerala is all set to witness a demogr-aphic transition with a rise in the proportion of aged in the total population along with declining growth rate of the population. As the number of older people continues to increase compared to the pool of available caregivers, families and policy-makers are in desperate need for knowledgeable and experienced care providers and sustain-able care delivery in homes and care centers. Despite the increasing demand of personnel and job opportunities in this field, there is a lack in public awareness and interest in choosing aging as a specialty or as a profitable career path.

In view of increasing numbers of senior care facilities in India, specifically Kerala, there is a high demand for managers and care providers who are knowledgeable in geriatric care. The country need gerontology experts, researchers, clinical practitioners, policy makers and program developers from multi disciplines to further advance senior care standards through policies and accreditation regulations. Bearing this in mind, TF ERCA designed PGDGCM, a need-based curriculum with an interdisciplinary focus on geriatric care management. It consist a series of courses which provide students with specialized knowledge and skills sets of particular value with focused academic and career goals. Theoretical knowledge

competencies will equip students to meet the multifaceted challenges of global aging.and
