“What a strange year it has been! Here we are already in mid summeralthough the weather has not beenexactly encouraging. Longing to wearthose lovely new sandals, lookingforward to holidays away, thoughtsinevitably turn to our feet. Over thewinter, I have seen more chilblainsthan ever before. Top Tip - Extremesof heat and cold are usually theculprit, often made worse by carheaters, of all things.Treatment of feet never fails to

reward care and attention. Very oftenpatients come to the surgery in discomfort and it is to our mutualsatisfaction when on leaving, there is a spring in their step.

Above all else, there is no alternative to prompt care and attentionand unfortunately, foot problems rarely resolve themselves. Therefore,it is better to have your feet checked out and treated according towhatever is bothering you” explains Marion. To make an appointment simply call Marion on 0115 939 3662

Meet Dylan Willliams, you may recognise him frommany places around Beeston, Chilwell, Long Eatonor Stapleford. From being your neighbour, playingfootball, poker or just enjoying a drink/meal withfriends and family to picking up his children fromnursery and school. “I’m Dylan Williams, a 33years old born and bred

builder from Beeston. I have two young childrenand recently got married at St Mary’s churchAttenborough in January.

I left school earlier than the rest of my year, as atthe time I wasn’t the most academic student. I knew at the time I wasn’tan indoor office type of person. I was offered work as a bricklayerslabourer and enjoyed working and earning money ‘as most youngpeople do’.

I was extremely lucky to have been able to gain experience, knowledgeand responsibility, by working for the same company for ten years, alsogaining various qualifications and becoming a respectable selfemployed bricklayer.

Recently I’ve established my own company D.W.Building and Roofingwhich has already had a huge response from people receiving bybusiness cards and postcards.

I take great pride in all my work and I am a reliable and trustworthyperson who is happy to give honest quotations for any sized jobs”.

Meet John Dabrowski - “I have recently moved to Nottingham from Sheffield to be near my elderlymother and help look after her. I have an older brother and a younger sister and am a committed Christian.

I was originally born and bred in Lenton, Nottingham and it’s good to be back after all these years. Helping people improve the look of their home is something I have been enjoying for the past thirty years

and from which I get a great deal ofsatisfaction.

Painting and decorating is a passionfor me and my favourite part is thelook on the people’s faces when I havefinished the work - with a good portfolio of references bearingwitness to this. You could say I was born to decorate. I reallyenjoy meeting new people and I find it a real pleasure to workfor them in a private capacity.

If you are looking for a quality painter and decorator then Iwould be pleased to make an initial visit, without charge, todiscuss any possible work you may want undertaking.

My specialism is interior painting and decorating and I use highquality materials to ensure a first class finish”.Give John a call today; “I look forward to meeting you andhelping you transform your lovely home”. There are many considerations when decoratingand furnishing your home, including; How muchwill it cost to create your dream home? How can Icreate a show home look? What style would go inmy home? Do I have the experience and time toorganise the furnishings for my home?

Meet Michael Vasiliou he has the answered tomany of these questions and more.

Michael explains, “Not many people have thetime to browse around shops to find furniture and

paint, finding the right colours to start their dream home. Then there’sthe curtains and soft furnishings to create the right style and look. Andwhen you have found every item you need to decorate your room, it’sback to the shops again to search for the furniture to complement yournewly decorated room! With that comes the questions, what style offurniture will go in your room? What style of furnishings will suit yourstyle of  house? Is your room a light room or do you need your wallsand furnishings to be light and bright because a lack of light? So manythings to think about!

Then if you have more than one room to do, you have to start and doit all again! This is all very time consuming and can cost more in thelong run”.With fifteen years of experience MV Furnishings make it easy, you don’t

even have to go to them, they will come to you in the comfort of yourown home; “We will put together a beautiful total package, your ownstyle and colour to create your dream home from an extensivecollection of brochures. Whether you are doing one room or a fullhouse or just want it decorated, we have many styles to suit yourbudget. We have fitted out homes in the UK and abroad so we have theexperience”.  To create your dream home Call Michael at MV Furnishings on07576 474 202

breeze appealAs the nation celebrated The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, so did over eight hundred Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, SeniorSection and their leaders, which all gathered at Harvey HaddenSports Complex to join in the fun. Brian Pettitt Photographercaught up with them on the day...

They were joined by Kate Royse, the Nottinghamshire County Commissioner and her team, who were making an epic trip of over 120 miles to join in the eight different events being held byGuiding across the county. The girls, ranging from 5 – 18 years, arrived at 10am from Beeston, Attenborough,

Chilwell, Stapleford, Trowell, Bramcote, Wollaton, Bilborough and Toton. The ‘Funday’ offered sixtyexciting activities for the girls to try, from sumo wrestling to cheer leading, circus skills to meetingrescued owls, a smoothy bike to kick boxing and a safari hunt to a graffiti wall where the girls couldsay what they would do if they ruled the world!

The day was put together with the Olympic and Paralympic values in mind; respect andequality, excellence and determination, friendship and courage, and activities

were organised relating to these values and the continents. Some girls from 3rd Attenborough Guides were also reporters for the

day. Here are their reports:

“Brilliant, Fantastic. There are many other words I could use to describe the Diamond Jubilee Event. I loved the

smoothie making bicycle and the bouncy castles. A very memorable day” Eleanor, 11

Fiona, 11, interviewed the County Commissioner “I have had a go at the Gladiator Battle and it wasawesome. I’ve been impressed with all theevents but this one is massive and the only onethat has rescued birds. I would most like to trythe Demolition Ball and the hand painting.”

‘Events like this are only possible with lots ofsupport from adult volunteers and we’d love to

hear from anyone who would like to help uscreate more special memories for girls and young

women across the county.’

As a company we are committed tosaving energy andthe environment. With this in mind we have carefully

put together a numberof measures that will either produce electricity or save electricity.By changing your existing fluorescent fittings to LED, all with very littledisruption, you can enjoy high quality lighting without the fear of large bills. The voltage optimization works well domestically and commercially. When

using lighting and appliances ie: fridges, in the case of convenience shopsyou have a number of fridge units and lighting on between 12-16 hours perday. Small changes could potentially save hundreds of pounds per year.

Let’s take a progress check on our ‘blooming lovely garden.

Lets take a look at our summer garden after our previous efforts to‘colour it up’. By now we should be well under way with our Annuals(bedding plants/hanging basket plants etc) and some of ourPerennials should be starting to bloom as well at this time of year -depending on which types you planted. The past month has been something of a roller-coaster ride with

intense heat for a few days followed by what seems like unremittingrain and temperature plunges that had us reaching for our wintercoats!

This makes life more challenging for our plants - especially the onesthat are more delicate in nature.

Extreme and unexpected weather is becoming the new ‘norm’according to the weather experts - and we ought to bear this in mindso that we can avoid disappointment.

We have mentioned sheltered areas in our previous articles and thisis important as wind really does change the outlook fort plant growth- and not for the better!

All plants really like to shelter (or thrive where shelter is possible)from cooler, blustery conditions met from the UK weather system.

If you are even slightly exposed to gusts of wind then it may beworth considering one of the following tactics:

• Wind toleranthedge or shrubs

• Double palingfencing (where thewind can partiallypass through)

• Tightly patternedtrellis

• Bamboo plants

• Arches - strategically placed to break any wind channels

Try to bear in mind that with man made structures it is essential notto completely block the wind but to slow it down. If you can then usemore than one method to layer the effect.

If you are able to landscape your soil to create raised areas then thiscan really help to bring relief to the areas below it - this takes moreeffort and also some planning as the shape of the landscape youcreate needs to assist guiding the airflow away successfully.Remember: a wind stopper works on both sides to calm the area and

give plants a better chance.

Back to getting a colour explosionBut hang on - Winter’s not here yet! We have our lovely ‘colour

garden’ to tend to!What about getting handy with the bulbs? Here’s a way to add

some extra delight to your patio as flowers come and go in theirsummer cycle:

Plant lily bulbs into terracotta pots and then arrange them whereyou feel the colour isn’t quite up to scratch - on the patio, alongborders, as collection of pots near where you sit in the garden -they are a great way to add a dimension of texture & colour to anypart of the garden.

Here’s how to get those bulbs glowing: use ordinary compost tohalf fill a pot then pop in about five lily bulbs.

Cover them with compost and keep them sheltered until theysprout up - in a greenhouse , a hut or even in your porch. Whenthey do grow you may need to support some of the taller varietieswith canes - all the better to withstand any sudden gusts!

To maintain them when grown just feed them once a week withliquid plant food - very easy to maintain!

You can help prolong flowering by simply removing the flowersas they fade - just trim the ‘dead heads’ back to just above thefoliage with garden cutters. Keep as much of the main stem &leaves as possible to help the bulb build up its food reserves fornext year’s even bloomier garden!

breezegardeningQUICK GUIDE TO BEDDING PLANTS

Seedlings: One seed each into a small pot(yoghurt pot), keep indoors until sprouted& harden off gently over a few weeks -plant out when a few inches tall.

Pots and tray, ready to plant: The easiestway if you don’t have space or time - comein trays or in tear-apart packs. Separateones in pots are easier to plant out as theroots aren’t entangled but they are a littlemore expensive.

Care: Water daily and feed once a week.Pull off any ‘dead heads’ once they startflowering.

Try these in your garden:

• Marigolds. Yes, a classic, and with goodreason - a lovely flower and great for kidsto plant as well.

Clematis. Flowers in late summer.

• Sun Flower (‘fun flower’!) Kids love theseso why not? Make sure you support with asimple garden can. Grows in pot or in theground (grow in a pot first before plantingin the ground though).

• Sweet Pea. A nice good coverage plant which delightswith a riot of bright and mixed colours(depending on which variety is chosen)

• Rosa Repeats flowering until late in theyear. Olive-green foliage, thrives on north-facing walls.

• Anthemis Masses of lax pale yellowdaisies with silver filigree foliage.

• Geraniums A wide sprawler with flowersfrom until late summer. Good mottledfoliage.

• Busy Lizzie. Easy and undemandingplant with real colour power!

• Petunia. Able to takethe British weather.

• Begonia. A sturdyplant with massesof compact colour.

All of these are good summer plants andwill help keep the colours swinging in yourgarden so come on - let’s keep it all perkyin our ‘little patch’ and have something tolook forward to as we journey onwardspast the height of summer.

Keep on learning and as always with yourgarden - enjoy!

SUMMER GARDEN TASKS:

WeedingWhen the weather changes from coldand wet to warm and sunny, a suddeninflux of weeds so get them removedquickly so that your flowers and plants cangrow unhindered.

Planting OutMake use of every available bit of space in your garden as now isthe time to begin sowing and planting in earnest. Pots, containers, window boxes and flower beds to increase your crop of plants andflowers during the summer. Don’t overcrowd though as they needgrowing room.

PondsNow is the time to check the health of your pond, ready for newwildlife. Frogs, newts and other amphibious creatures lay theireggs in spring and the insects that gather there also provide foodfor birds. They need suitable plant life in them in order to createoxygen. Dead plants should be removed to give new plants morelight.

PestsAs more and more plants and flowers begin to grow in yourgarden and in your home, the pests arrive! Checks for diseases andpests. Discolouration, wilting and brittle leaves are all be a warningthat your plant is ill. Tackle promptly before it spreads.

WateringWhen the sun is at its strongest, it is likely that any water sprayedon the leaves of your plant will cause it to burn so water plantsearly in the morning or late at night. It’s good therapy in theevening!

Our Feathered FriendsAre hungry at this time of year and will eat any fruit bearing cropsso if you want to keep them, get them covered! Netting for lowcrops and things that deter for higher crops such as fruiting trees -old cd’s hung on string help. Leave some for the birds though - orkeep the bird table stocked up!

Last autumn, Keep Britain Tidy launched a brand new campaigncalled Love Where You Live. The national anti-littering initiativeaimed to encourage individuals, groups and organisations to make astand and improve their communities, villages, towns and cities.

Since the launch, thousands of people up and down the countryhave joined forces in the fight against litter by organising Big Tidy Upevents. It’s been a great success so far, but we need that fight to carryon - especially when the world will be watching England for theOlympics.TV presenter Kirstie Allsopp has lent her support to the campaign

saying: “I am immensely proud of my country but, like most people, I get a sinking feeling when I see the mounds of cigarette butts andpiles of empty food wrappers strewn along our roadsides, in ourparks and outside our homes.

“It costs £885 millionto clean up therubbish on our streets,a staggering amountat a time of cuts. That’sour money, whichcould be better spenton other things. It’ssuch a waste.”

She added: “KeepBritain Tidy’s LoveWhere You Livecampaign sums upperfectly how we canall make a difference, whether you are anindividual orcommunity group, alocal authority, smallbusiness or multi-national corporation. “Get together with

other people to get ridof the litter that’sclogging up yourstreet, your park oroutside your

workplace - neighbours, friends, colleagues – a small gesture canmake you feel like you live in a better environment.”

Litter is everyone’s responsibility and Love Where You Live showshow we can all make a difference. From the very small action of

people simply taking responsibility for their own litter andusing a bin, to communities coming together to clean uptheir neighbourhood, through to businesses, manufacturers and councils making it easy for people todo the right thing, every one of us can make a differenceto clean up our streets and restore pride to our localareas.

If you care about where you live and want to see itclean and litter-free then Love Where You Liveneeds your help. Visit www.lovewhereyoulive.organd pledge your support to the campaign. On the website you can join an existing event ororganise one in your area, nominate an area youfeel is in need of some TLC or simply let us knowabout your favourite place.

Together we can take action to reduce the amountof litter where we live, in the places we visit and thespaces that we use.
