The mission of the Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant is to destroy the stockpile of chemical weapons stored at

the Blue Grass Army Depot near Richmond, Kentucky.

MAIN PLANT

Neutralization followed by supercritical water oxidation, or SCWO, will be used to destroy nerve agent-filled munitions.

BlueGrassArmyDepot

The SCWO reactor vessel combines water, fuel, air and hydrolysate.

The hydrolysate is oxidized to carbon dioxide, water and salts.

KENTUCKY

Lexington

Frankfort

Richmond

Blue Grass Army Depot began as an ammunition and general supply storage depot.

2019

BGCAPP operations planned to commence.

2002

ACWA was assigned responsibility of destroying the chemical weapons stockpile stored in Colorado and Kentucky.

2009

Operation Swift Solution team safely eliminated three deteriorating steel containers that stored a mixture of GB (sarin) nerve agent.

2006

Groundbreaking for BGCAPP marked the start of construction in Kentucky.

1942

The Static Detonation Chamber will use thermal destruction technology to process mustard agent-filled munitions, augmenting the main plant.

STATIC DETONATION CHAMBER

NERVE AGENT IS STORED IN ROCKETS AND PROJECTILES, AND MUSTARD AGENT IS STORED IN PROJECTILES, INSIDE EARTH-COVERED IGLOOS AT THE BLUE GRASS ARMY DEPOT.

THREE TYPES OF CHEMICAL WEAPONS ARE STORED AT THE DEPOT.
