    FALL IN THE WHITE MOUNTAINS OF NEW HAMPSHIREThe changing colors of fall are a sign that the trees are preparing for winter. During the spring and summer, tre

    produce in their leaves most of the foods they need to grow. This food-making process takes place in the cellscontaining chlorophyll. This is what gives leaves their green color.

    In fall, because of shorter days and cooler temperatures, the leaves stop making food. The chlorophyll breaksdown and the green color disappears to reveal yellow and orange. The red and purple colors come from otherchemical processes. Sugar in the leaves produces the brilliant red of maples, for example.

    The degree of color varies from tree to tree. Leaves which receive a lot of sun turn red while those on the shadside of the same tree can be yellow. The color also depends on the combination of weather conditions. Whenautumn is warm and rainy, the leaves are less red.
