Greetings from Liz
4 | The Thompson Center on Lourdes
I remember growing up and hearing that March comes in like a lion but goes out like a lamb. Is March 2021 coming in like a lion or a lamb? March of 2020 began as normal, but soon became an untamed lion. On March 16, 2020 TCoL temporarily closed until July 6, 2020. Like so many, we were trying to understand what COVID-19 was and how it would impact our lives. In one year, so much has changed for every-one. COVID-19 has brought uncertainty, fear, loss, depression, irritability, isolation, hardship, and the list goes on. Some have lost their jobs, health and lives. We have all lost connections with family and friends and our new “normal”, is anything but normal. On the flip side, there have been positives due to the pandemic. It has given us a new sense of appreciation and gratefulness. It has offered us a new perspective on things that we often take for granted – our freedoms, leisure, connections, work, family, and friends. At TCoL, the pandemic has changed the way we operate with limited activities and participants, social distancing and the days that we are open. The Thompson Center on Lourdes has taken measures that put the safety and health of our participants, volunteers, and staff as priority. And yes, masks will be required, even if the state lifts the mandate. We are hopeful that the lion will be tamed and that in the near future TCoL will be open 5 days a week with activities in the morning and afternoon (including cards!!)! This crisis will end and we will once again welcome everyone to meet at TCoL. Liz Neuman Executive Director Thompson Center on Lourdes (TCoL) - Celebrating Life After 50 2331 E. Volunteer Spotlight - Tax Help
March 2021 | 21
My name is Tom, a volunteer at the Thompson Center on Lourdes.
I grew up in Green Bay, went to school in Milwaukee and have been living in the Fox Valley for the last 7 years. Volunteering has always been something that intrigued me, however I never had the oppor-tunity to do so, until 2020. Like so many people, my life was turned upside down last March - daycare closed, I lost my job, my wife had to work longer hours, our family and friends couldn't visit and we felt stressed and isolated. After the initial shock had worn off and we settled into life with COVID, I began to see the pandemic as an opportunity to reprioritize. I got the chance to be a stay-at-home dad to my two toddlers - Maggie and Eddie - and enjoyed a whole summer of fun with them, something I never thought would be possible.
The kids started back at daycare two days a week in September, which gave me two days a week to do something else. I explored a variety of positions in the community and since September have volunteered at the Thompson Center on Lourdes on Monday mornings - Liz, the staff, the Line Dancers, the Pickleballers, the pool players, the bingo players, the painters and all the participants - have all been so welcoming and fun, that for the first time in a long time, I genuinely look forward to Monday mornings.
