Capitalization: First Word of a Sentence
• Capital letters are used in many places.
One place capital letters are used is at the
beginning of a sentence.
• A sentence always begins with a capital letter.
Example
Camping is fun. Have you ever slept outside?
Underline the beginning letter of each sentence
three times.
did you know that the teddy bear is over one hundred years
old? this popular toy has been around longer than the electric
light, telephone, and motor car. in 1902, President Theodore
Roosevelt was on a hunting trip and had the chance to shoot a
captured bear. he refused, saying “Spare the bear!” a cartoon
was drawn of this event and was put into the newspaper.
two shopkeepers, Morris and Rose Michtom, made a soft bear
that they called Teddy’s Bear. the teddy bear was an overnight
success and still very popular today.
